She further added that performance is propelled by workers evaluation of what they gain or lose by acting in a
particular way.
Akinsorotan and Adedeji (2001) supported the fact that better promotion prospects, opportunity for further
training are special ingredients needed for high organizational job performance.
Taylor (1991) also concord that incentives are prerequisite to job performance and achievement of a set goal in
an organization. He further reiterated that any worker who does not get as much incentives as he anticipates may
likely be dissatisfied and not perform on the job.
This implies that if the necessary expected incentives expected by the worker are lacking in the work place .it
may prevent workers from exercising their proficiency skill and expertise on the job.
Age is also said to be an important factor in job performance. Olorunsola (2010) asserted that age may diminish
the activities of older workers as ability to move smart and even think logically may be lost, slowing down the
speed of work while Avolio, Waldman and McDaniel (1990) had a positive view that older workers usually
have more job experience and experience is an important predictor of job performance. Shepherd (1995) decline
from such view that aging might depress performance in physical demanding jobs. The problem of the study
therefore, is to investigate the job performance of administrative staff in federal and state universities in south
west Nigeria and also to examine whether age will significantly influence job performance of administrative
staff.
Purpose of the Study
This study is to achieve two main purposes namely:
1. To investigate the job performance of administrative staff in federal and state universities in south west
Nigeria.
2. To examine whether the age will significantly influence job performance of these administrators.
Research Question
1. Is there any difference between job performance of administrative staff in federal and state
Universities
2. Will age influence the job performance of administrative staff
The following hypotheses were generated to guide the study.
- Ho1 there is no significant difference between the job performance of administrative staff in federal
and state Universities.
- Ho2 Age will not significantly influence the job performance of administrative staff.
METHODOLOGY
The descriptive research of the survey type was adopted in the study. The population of the study comprised of
all the administrative staff in south west Nigeria Universities.
The Multi-Stage and random Sampling technique was used to select four universities out of which two are
federal and two are state Universities.
The research instrument for the study was questionnaire titled job performance questionnaire (JPQ) to elicit
information from the supervisors and heads of units about their subordinates. Both face and content validity of
the instrument was established by experts and the correlation coefficient was 0.229. The reliability of the
instrument was ascertained using Cronbach Alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.916 was obtained.
