A total of 37 students expressed the opinion that democracy should be taught to the whole of society. In this
theme, two sub-dimensions were determined. Students stated that all the members who compose society should
be taught democracy for a common life and a livable society. In the “claiming rights” sub-dimension, students
stated that citizens can claim their rights, unfairness can be prevented and the number of responsible individuals
can increase if all society is taught democracy. A student said, “We should teach democracy to people who do not
know their rights, or who do not claim their rights; namely to everyone. We should teach it to drivers in the
traffic, students in school, teachers and the whole of society so that everyone can claims his/her rights and
unfairness can be prevented.” (S49).
Based on the idea that democracy prevents unfairness and develops the claiming of rights, another student stated,
“We should teach democracy to everybody, because everyone could behave unjustly one day. She/he can upset
his/her friends or family. We should teach democracy to everyone to prevent such situations.” (S43).
In the “livable society” theme, it was emphasized that democracy and democratic values are necessary for a
world and a society where everybody lives together, rules are effective and obeyed and consensus can take the
place of conflict. It was emphasized that everyone in society should be taught democracy for a democratic rule
and for empathy. Students also stressed that teaching democracy to all members of society is the key to a happy
future. The opinions of 3 students concerning rules, justice, respect and empathy are as follows:
“Democracy should be taught to everybody so that the rules are obeyed and mistakes are not made.” (S61), “We
must teach democracy to everybody including children, politicians and parents. For instance, responsibility and
justice develop in a democratic society. People are aware of their mistakes; they trust more and they are happier
in a democratic and fair country.” (S14). “Democracy is important for all the people. For this reason, it should
be taught to everybody. Someone who does not know democracy does not respect others. Everybody should learn
democracy to understand and respect others.” (S51).
