(b) a surviving spouse or surviving Domestic Partner (who receives<br />

benefits in accordance with Section 5.16(b)) of a Member who dies<br />

before the attainment of age 65 while eligible to retire; or<br />

(c) a spouse or Domestic Partner (who receives benefits in accordance<br />

with Section 5.17(a) or (b)) of a Member with Coordinated Benefits<br />

who dies after retirement but before the attainment of age 65.<br />

TOTAL NORMAL COST<br />

UNIVERSITY<br />

State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS) means the Defined Benefit<br />

Program of the State Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of<br />

California.<br />

The Total Normal Cost means the sum of the University Normal Cost<br />

and Member Normal Cost, where:<br />

(a) University Normal Cost equals the product of the University normal<br />

cost rate for the applicable Member classification for the Plan Year in<br />

which the election to establish Service Credit is made, as determined<br />

by the Plan actuaries, expressed as a level percentage of payroll,<br />

times the applicable Covered Compensation the Active Member<br />

would have earned during the period of service to be established,<br />

and<br />

(b) Member Normal Cost equals the Member contribution formula for the<br />

applicable Member classification in effect for the Plan Year in which<br />

the election to establish Service Credit is made applied to the<br />

applicable Covered Compensation the Active Member would have<br />

earned during the period of service to be established. The Member<br />

Normal Cost shall be exclusive of any amounts that would otherwise<br />

have been redirected to the University of California Defined<br />

Contribution Plan.<br />

University means the University of California, a public trust and a public<br />

corporation of the State of California.<br />
