removed from French <strong>Art</strong> Nouveau, that<br />
appeared in Vienna at the turn <strong>of</strong> the<br />
century. This desk set, dating from 1905,<br />
the year H<strong>of</strong>fmann received the commission<br />
to build his masterpiece, the Palais<br />
Stoclet in Brussels, embodies his architectural<br />
vision. It illustrates his doctrine that<br />
aesthetic principles should be applied<br />
equally to architecture and the decorative<br />
arts. H<strong>of</strong>fmann insisted that an object, no<br />
matter its category or material, could<br />
attain the highest level through the quality<br />
<strong>of</strong> its design and workmanship.<br />
