Island home. Golden airborne figures<br />

designed by Seraphin Soudbinine (1870-<br />

1944), a favorite student <strong>of</strong> Rodin, charge<br />

through clouds interpreted by Dunand in<br />

shattered eggshell pressed into a damp<br />

layer <strong>of</strong> lacquer. Dunand was so lavish in<br />

his use <strong>of</strong> gold for angels that he was<br />

obliged to write requesting an additional<br />

500 dollars to cover his expenditure. <strong>The</strong><br />

heroic figural aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> Deco never<br />

received great emphasis in France, but it<br />

was quickly adopted for architectural<br />

ornament in the United States, notably at<br />

Rockefeller Center.<br />
