<strong>Scholarship</strong> Description: The Egan Hope <strong>Scholarship</strong> Program was initiated in 1992 to honor Monsignor John Egan on the 50th<br />

anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. The program was developed in response to a need for initiatives that would enable<br />

inner-city students from Chicago neighborhoods to earn college degrees.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Qualifications: To be considered, you must prove residency within the City of Chicago, graduate from a City of Chicago<br />

high school and demonstrate need as determined by the FAFSA. You must have an exceptional record of social activism, leadership<br />

and community service. Recipients are required to commit to social activism, serve as a community leader, fulfill community service<br />

projects and participate in events determined by supervisors in the Office of Multicultural Student Success, including sessions with staff<br />

for advising, mentoring and assessment.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Name: National Merit <strong>Scholarship</strong> Program<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Description: <strong>High</strong> school juniors enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

Qualifying Test (PSAT). If your school does not administer this test, talk to your counselor. Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000<br />

with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in<br />

the National Merit®<strong>Scholarship</strong> Program. In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are<br />

invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are<br />

notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Qualifications:<br />

• Be enrolled as a high school student, progressing normally toward graduation or completion of high school<br />

by <strong>2013</strong>, and planning to enter college no later than the fall of <strong>2013</strong><br />

• Be a citizen of the United States; or be a U.S. lawful permanent resident<br />

• Take the 2011 PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of the high school program and no later than the third<br />

year in grades 9 through 12, regardless of grade classification or educational pattern<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Deadline: This scholarship does not have a specific deadline. Your PSAT/NMSQT results are automatically submitted and<br />

reviewed for eligible scholarships and merit. In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high<br />

scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified by mail at their home<br />

addresses that they have advanced to Finalist standing. <strong>High</strong> school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present<br />

to each Finalist.<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Name: Northwestern University Good Neighbor, Great University <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong> Description: Northwestern University will offer this scholarship to incoming admitted freshmen who graduate from<br />

high schools in Evanston and Chicago. The new Good Neighbor, Great University <strong>Scholarship</strong> Program will begin with the freshman<br />

class. The scholarships will replace student loans, as well as earnings from summer and work-study jobs that students normally must<br />

contribute to the cost of their education.<br />
