chanting and light yoga moves within a 

Jewish context. Anyone is welcome. 

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, 

Nut-free Options at Adath 

The Inclusion Committee and the 

Adath kitchen staff are excited to announce 

that each Shabbat there will be 

more lunch options available for those 

with food allergies/sensitivities. On the 

table near the Social Hall windows 

there will be gluten-free bread/bagels, 

dairy-free cream cheese, and a plain 

salad with dressings on the side. Committee 

members are providing gluten-, 

dairy- and nut-free baked goods each 

week, and are looking for other congregants 

to bake as well.

kitchen staff is also addressing these 

issues on an as-needed basis. Feel

Dealing with Digital Photos: 

Tech Support for the “Technologically Challenged”

Did you grow up before the computer age? Do you take pictures with a digital 

camera or cell phone, but aren’t sure how to organize them, print them, or share 

them with others? Learn some great new skills, just in time to share your Hanukkah 

photos! 

Join Adath member David Hoffman in two special hands-on sessions. We’ll start 

with downloading photos from your camera to your computer, and sending them 

via email or sharing them on an online web album. We will start to discuss cell 

phone photos too. We will also discuss how to order prints online so that they’re 

waiting at a nearby store within an hour! 

The second session will include more fun ways to store photos online, including 

external storage and backing up your data so it’s not lost accidentally. We will 

explore utilizing online or “cloud” storage to have access to your pictures everywhere 

you go. And we’ll continue optimizing your cell phone photo experience.

computer.

A Life of Everyday Holiness—Study Mussar with Rabbi Titcher 

During Rosh Hashanah Rabbi Titcher spoke about pursuing a life of everyday 

holiness. He is interested in further exploring this concept with the Adath community, 

starting with a four-session introductory class on the Jewish philosophy 

Mussar. He expects to hold evening classes in January and February, with 

hopes of expanding more in the spring. Have you ever wanted to learn about 

incorporating spirituality and holiness into daily routines? Or are you curious 

about studying a different type of Jewish text? Please contact Rabbi Titcher

Shabbat Dinner and Hanukkah Party with Adath 20s & 30s 

Friday, December 14 ● 7 PM 

Join 20s and 30s from across the Twin Cities to celebrate Shabbat and Hanukkah 

at a downtown Minneapolis loft. There's no shortage of lakes in our beautiful 

state and there's no shortage of latke recipes to enjoy, from traditional potato to 

carrot-beet. Whip up a batch of your favorite kind, invent a new one, or visit the 

freezer section. If you're not feeling the fry of the latke, feel free to bring another 

vegetarian potluck item. Spread the word to any 20s & 30s you know!

“Four Rabbis” 

December 3, 7 PM at Beth El 

Rabbi Adam Titcher and Rabbi Aaron Weininger will join 

Rabbi Jeremy Fine of Temple of Aaron and Rabbi Emma 

Kippley-Ogman of Beth Jacob Congregation for an evening 

of intimate learning and getting to know these newest rabbis 

in the Twin Cities Conservative community. 

This special evening will provide an opportunity to better 

understand what motivates our new rabbis Jewishly, using 

the Talmudic text “Our rabbis have taught, four entered into 

the Pardes” (Babylonian Talmud Hagigah 14b). The text will 

serve as a vehicle for encountering ideas about religious life 

today and relationship to Torah and the Divine. 

We look forward to learning together as a community that 

evening. 

An Exploration of Judaism 

for Interfaith Couples and Others 

January 8 - February 19, 2013 

Would you or someone you know appreciate a short overview 

of Judaism—as an introduction or to fill in gaps in your 

background? Are you curious about how Judaism and 

Christianity compare in core beliefs and practices? 

An Exploration of Judaism for Jews, Interfaith Families and 

People of All Faiths is a short, informal course taught by 

Rabbi Kravitz, Rabbi Titcher, Rabbi Weininger, Cantor 

Buckner and Jim Sherman. This six-session class is open to 

anyone: Jews, non-Jews, interfaith couples and adult children 

of interfaith parents. It meets on Tuesdays at 7:30-9:00 

PM, beginning January 8. No charge—donations are encouraged.

and fun to learn and do at the Sampler. You’ll enjoy a wide 

variety of choices, from challah baking to science fiction, 

plus Eddie Cantor, texts of terror, current issues and more!

Learn to Read Torah ● January 12 - March 9 

An adult Torah Reading class will meet for eight Shabbat 

mornings at 9:30-10:30 AM. With master Torah reader Todd 

Werner, participants will learn basic Torah reading skills 

and begin to prepare a short reading for a Shabbat later 

in the year. 

If you can read Hebrew phonetically and want to contribute 

to our congregation’s ritual life please join us! Fee of $50, 

or $75 for “adult learning sustainers,” can be adjusted

Would you be interested in a Caregiver 

Support Group? 

Many of us are caregivers to loved ones who are aging or 

who have serious health concerns. 

Being a caregiver is a complicated and demanding role 

that can be emotionally and physically exhausting for the 

caretaker. The primary caregiver may feel lonely—that 

friends and other family members should not be burdened 

with the caregiver’s concerns and might not understand 

those concerns. 

Support groups that bring together people in similar situations 

are often very helpful. Within the Twin Cities Jewish 

community, there are a couple of support groups for caregivers 

that are open to all. But recently, I’ve had several 

requests from congregants about the possibility of having 

a caregiver support group at Adath. 

Would you be interested in being part of such a support 

group at Adath? If there is enough interest, we can look 

into organizing such a group. Please contact me to let me 

know of your interest, or if you’d like more information 

about support groups in the Jewish community that are 

already available. 

Caregivers often have their own children and grandchildren 

who have serious concerns and questions for which they 

seek answers. I recently had a request for helping grandchildren 

understand the situation of a grandparent with 

memory loss and/or Alzheimer’s disease. Please let me 

know if that is something you, your children or grandchildren 

need help with, and I will be happy to assist you. 

There are a multitude of resources available for caregivers, 

including publications, websites and organizations. For information 

about such resources or to consult the Adath 

Congregational Nurse about other concerns, you can reach

Torah Fund Cards Are Available 

Torah Fund cards are for sale at the price of 

3 for $10. Cards can be picked up or mailed 

out. Those that are mailed out will require 

extra money for postage, depending on how 

many sets of 3 cards you purchase. If you want to buy just 

one card, it is $4, and can be mailed out for you to a person 

of your choice, commemorating a special event in that person's

Fund cards supports our rabbis' and cantors’ Jewish

Notes from Our Women’s League President 

I am going to use this opportunity to say thank you to 

everyone for the kind and caring thoughts I received as I 

was recuperating from knee surgery. The calls, cards 

and visits lifted my spirits and made the recovery that 

much easier. 

Another thank you goes to the Bnai Emet Women’s League 

for their generous donation. We used the funds to make a 

donation to the Gan Katan program, the Kiddush Lunch 

program, the Jewish National Fund, and also fulfilled a couple 

of “wishes” for our catering staff. 

I would also like to share the pride I felt receiving the Emerald 

Award at the Women’s League National Convention. 

This is the highest level of the “Jewels in the Crown” and I 

accepted it on behalf of a group of women who exhibited 

dedication and extraordinary team work.

Isaac Mintzer, son of Heidi Schneider 

and Joel Mintzer, will be called to the 

Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat 

morning, December 8, 2012. He is the 

brother of Asher and the grandson of 

Evie and Dr. Al Mintzer, Doris Schneider, 

and Carl Schneider of blessed memory. 

Isaac’s favorite subject at HMJDS is 

Computer-Aided Building Design. He 

plays piano and is a Boy Scout. As his 

social justice project, Isaac is mentoring 

younger Cub Scouts to encourage selfconfidence 

and develop leadership skills. 

Through his Bar Mitzvah training he has 

learned “how kind and helpful my tutors, 

teachers and the rabbis have been.”

New Session of GAN KATAN (Little Garden) 

Weekly Parent and Child Class to Begin this Winter! 

Call it a “PLAY” group, call it a “SUPPORT” group, call it “FUN”! Gan Katan is a 

safe, supportive and nurturing environment for parents of children ages birth to 2 

years to share experiences. Each week a different child development, Jewish 

family life or parenting topic is discussed. Gan Katan is led by Jodi Rubin, 

mother of four and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with a Master’s 

Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. 

Winter session will begin in January, 2013. Morning and evening classes are 

available. Adath membership not required to attend. If interested, or for more

Gan Shelanu Toddler and 

Preschool Registration 

Begins Monday, January 7 

for 2013-2014 School Year 

Beginning Monday, January 7, 2013, 

Adath congregants whose children 

are not currently enrolled in any 

program at Gan Shelanu Preschool 

may call the Gan Office to receive an 

application form for the coming school 

year. Programs are available for 

children ages 16 months to 61 months 

as of September 1, 2013. 

All registrations will be handled 

through the mail. Returning member 

students will automatically receive 

applications, and all returning member 

forms will be considered “on time” if 

they are turned in or postmarked by 

January 31, 2013. In addition, sibling 

applications of returning students will 

have first consideration after all 

returning member students have 

been placed. 

Application forms for members whose 

children are “new” to the Gan will be 

considered “on time” if they are 

turned in or postmarked by January 

31, 2013. 

All Adath congregants must be in 

good standing (i.e. current in all their 

financial obligations to the synagogue) 

for their child’s application to 

be considered. Prospective 

members must have met with the 

Executive Director prior to January 

17, 2013. 

Programs available include: 

The Toddler Program— 

encompasses children ages 16 

months to 33 months. Two, three 

and five-day programs are available. 

Early morning and afternoon childcare 

options are offered to children 

in this program. 

The Preschool Program—is available 

to children ages 34 months to 48 

months. Students enrolled in this 

program may choose a three or five 

day program. Early morning and afternoon 

childcare options are also offered 

to children enrolled in this program. 

The Pre-Kindergarten Program—is 

a five-day-a-week program, and all 

children ages 49 months to 61 months 

will attend this program. Early morning 

and afternoon childcare options are 

also offered to children enrolled in this 

program.

ALL registrations will be considered on 

a space-available basis. If there are

waiting list.

Drop-in Playgroup ● December 5 and 19 

Infants and young children (ages 0-2 years) and parents/ 

caregivers are invited to join the "drop in" playgroup for a 

fun and meaningful hour of interaction with other young 

families. The one-hour class includes play time, presentation 

of an early childhood topic and discussion, art project 

(for the older children) and circle time. 

Join us every other Wednesday at 9:30-10:30 AM. Check in 

at the Education Office. RSVPs are helpful, but not necessary. 

This program is open to the community—invite your 

friends or family! Thanks to generous support from the 

Adath Women's League, there is no charge.

Goldenberg, challah baker extraordinaire, will show you 

step by step how to make delicious challah!

hands-on experience. Novice and expert “bakers” ages 

4-100 years are invited! We’ll nosh, we’ll schmooze— 

and everyone will go home with a challah ready to pop 

in the oven!

Summer Camp and Israel Programs 

Scholarships Available 

Summer 2013 seems far off but It's time to plan for camp and 

Israel programs in 2013-2014. The Adath Congregation 

awards scholarships to encourage participation in educational 

summer camping and study programs by Adath students who 

have been involved in Adath programs such as Shabbat 

Morning Program (SMP) and USY (United Synagogue 

Youth.) The preferred programs are those offered through 

the Conservative Movement. Merit scholarships are available 

for students who will have celebrated Bar/Bat Mitzvah by 

June, 2013. 

All students who plan to attend the approved programs at 

Camp Ramah, the Ramah Israel Pilgrimage, the USY Summer 

in Israel Program, Young Judea camps or programs in 

Israel, three or four-week sessions of Herzl Camp, three-week 

sessions at Camp Chi or high school programs in Israel sponsored 

or endorsed by the Conservative Movement, such as 

Ramah or USY and Alexander Muss High School in Israel 

Programs, from June, 2013 through May, 2014 should apply 

for an Adath Scholarship. Priority is given to older students, 

and those who have demonstrated service and leadership 

through their participation in Adath programs, particularly 

through service to SMP. 

The amount of the merit scholarships and the financial 

awards depend on the money available to the Scholarship 

Fund from the L’Chaim appeal and the Adath Jeshurun Foundation, 

the number of students applying for scholarships, and 

the costs of the programs. 

Financial aid is also available for those applicants whose families 

demonstrate financial need in order to attend approved 

programs. 

Scholarship information will be mailed to households with 

eligible children in early December. If you do not receive an 

information letter by mid-December, and your child is eligible 

for a scholarship, call the synagogue office to request an application. 

Note that Adath has its own scholarship application. 

Students who apply for aid elsewhere using the community 

application also need to complete the Adath application. 

Application materials will also be available on-line at the 

Adath website: http://www.adathjeshurun.org. Some scholarship 

assistance is also available from individual camps 

and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation.

year 2003, in preparation for assigning Bar and Bat Mitzvah 

dates. Please call Gisell, the Rabbis’ Assistant, at

Monday, January 14, 2013, at 7:30-8:30 PM in the Chapel 

to share information about the Bar and Bat Mitzvah and

The Holocaust and the Dirty War 

Center for Jewish Studies Lecture 


Amy Kaminsky, University of Minnesota professor 

of gender, women, and sexuality studies, 

will speak on “The Holocaust and the Dirty War: 

Jewish Art and Literature in Argentina” on December 

5 at 7:30 PM at Shir Tikvah Congregation. 

For many of Argentina’s Jews, especially 

those affected by state terror of the military junta 

of 1976-84, the Holocaust resonates deeply 

with their own nation’s Dirty War. This lecture 

will explore these connections as reflected by 

Argentine Jewish writers and artists. 

JDAM Reads! 2013 

For Jewish Disability Awareness Month, which 

takes place in February, JDAM Reads introduces 

two books by inspiring Jewish authors, encouraging 

discussion of the role of Judaism in 

living with a disability.
