Rabbismay do so by incorporating their travel experiences into sermons and newsletterarticles. In August, Cindy and I had the opportunity to spend a week in Curaçao,a Caribbean Island just off the coast of Venezuela. It offered beautiful beachesand a getaway where my cell phone, thankfully, did not have reception. I wasespecially drawn to this place because it also has a rich Jewish history. The first Jew arrived in Curaçao in 1634. By 1651 the community of SephardicJews from Amsterdam established Mikve Israel Synagogue, the oldest synagoguein the Americas. Their fascinating synagogue museum has a Torah carriedout of Spain when the Jews were expelled in 1492. The community of Curaçaobecame so well established and prosperous that it made contributions tobuild the Sephardic synagogues of New York City and Newport, Rhode Island.Did You Order Your Tickets?Tickets for the High Holy Days are notautomatically mailed to congreganthouseholds. They must be ordered inadvance. If you did not receive a HighHoly Days packet, please call theoffice, 952.545.2424 or download theforms from our website. The orderdeadline for everything (memorialbook, etrog and lulav, food orders, etc.) is September 7.Holiday MealsThe High Holy Days season can be ajoyous time, but it can also be a lonelytime for people who are not able to bewith close friends and family.Don’t be without a welcoming table offriends or family this High Holy Daysseason. If you can offer space at yourfamily’s table, or if you would like to beinvited for a holiday meal, please signup by completing the “Other ItemsForm” with your High Holy Daysticket order. You may also call thesynagogue office at 952.215.3904 ore-mail ninas@adath.net.We had the pleasure of attending Shabbat morning services in their buildingwhich was opened in 1732, the oldest synagogue building in the WesternHemisphere. We admired the beautiful mahogany pews, ark and bimah, as wellas the magnificent bronze chandeliers. The floors are covered in white sand, areminder of our people’s journey through the Sinai desert. They say that sandfloors were adopted by Jews expelled from Spain to muffle the sound as theycontinued to practice Judaism in private. The customs of the service were acombination of Sephardic Portuguese and Ashkenazic rites and tune, much ofit familiar. We were delighted to see that their practice was egalitarian. The Shabbat regulars and clergy were welcoming, though they must tire of thethousands of guests visiting the Island who make their way to the synagogue. We indulged in Jewish geography and within a few minutes identified people wehad in common. Our trip was a poignant reminder of our strong bonds to Klal Yisrael, thepeoplehood of Israel. Even as one leaves one’s home community there are tiesthat connect us to our people and to our faith. This is a theme that I hope wenever tire of or find boring. I look forward to the arrival of the High Holidays, when so many of us reconnect to those ties and to the covenant of our peoplewith God, and wish everyone a healthy and joyous New Year.Shana Tova u’Metuka,Rabbi Harold J. This striking, limited-edition lithograph by Austrian artistFriedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) features whimsical stick figures, giltonion domes, and boxy forms composed against bright blue Rorschach shapes.Created for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, the “Munchen” posterwas donated to Adath Jeshurun in 1980 by the London, Abrams, Miller, Rich,Kriedberg, Gensler and Fruen families.Hundertwasser became a well-known Austrian artist, although controversial. Heand his widowed mother, who was Jewish, lived perilously during the Nazi occupationof Austria in World War II. The two avoided persecution by posing asChristians, a credible ruse because Hundertwasser's father had been Catholic.Politically, Hundertwasser developed an anti-totalitarian position early on. Takinga closer look at Adath’s poster might suggest that Hundertwasser is even commentingon the regimentation represented by Olympic Games, as his figures appeartrapped within square boxes. It is an eerie allusion, but poster-maker Hundertwassercould not have known that at the 1972 Munich Games, Palestiniangunmen would murder eleven members of the Israeli team after infiltrating theOlympic village and taking them hostage. As observers celebrate the achievements of the 2012 London Summer Olympics,it is critical to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of one of the Games’darker moments.Sharon ZweigbaumSEPTEMBER, 2012 9
