Beit T’Shuvah Is Returning to Minneapolis
Friday, October 12 ● 8 PM
At Adath Jeshurun
On Friday, October 12, Beit T’Shuvah, a
residential treatment center and full service
congregation in Los Angeles, is bringing
its inspirational and musical Friday night
service to Adath Jeshurun Synagogue at
8 PM. This service is innovative and filled
with congregational participation. Local
gospel Pavarotti, Robert Robinson, will be part of the service, along with choir,
musical instruments and our Adath clergy.
Two years ago, Beit T’Shuvah came here with Freedom Song, a musical showing
how people with addiction problems can move to recovery and a new life.
The primary reason for bringing Beit T’Shuvah with Rabbi Mark Borovitz to Minneapolis
is to make the community aware that addiction is a disease and should
not be a secret that families have to live with.
Thank you to sponsors Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, the
Jewish Recovery Network, Adath Jeshurun Congregation, and the Laurence and
Shirley Zipkin family.
Celebrating 83-Year-Olds ● Shabbat Morning ● October 13
On Shabbat morning, October 13, please join us as we honor our 83-year-old
members in celebration of their “second B'nai Mitzvah”. The custom of celebrating
a second Bar or Bat Mitzvah at age 83 derives from the verse in Psalm 90,
"The days of our years are seventy, or if by reason of special strength, eighty
years...." Since a "normal" life span is pegged at 70, one can start counting again
from there. Add 13 years, and you get 83.
Celebrating Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah, whether it is the first or second time, is a
wonderful way to celebrate one's commitment to Judaism. If you are 83 or know
someone who has reached this special milestone, please join us. For further
information, please contact Gisell, the Rabbis’ Assistant, at 952.545.2424.
how values of inclusion, fairness, civic participation, and Lifnei Iver (not putting a
stumbling block before the blind) inform how we look at the proposed amendment.
Intro to Judaism/Conversion Program
Begins October 16
Adath Jeshurun, Beth El and Sharei Chesed synagogues
offer a joint Introduction to Judaism course on Tuesday
evenings, beginning October 16 and taught by rabbis of
these three Conservative congregations.
The Introduction to Judaism class is a wonderful chance to
explore the wealth of Jewish history and values as well as
one’s personal beliefs. This course will challenge and
inspire participants both intellectually and spiritually. A
beginning Hebrew class is offered as well.
Introduction to Judaism is open to Jews, non-Jews, people
who have grown up in interfaith families, and those considering
conversion. It especially enables people who are
considering conversion and their partners to study Judaism
seriously as they struggle with the religious and personal
questions that are raised in this soul-searching process.
Anyone interested in enrolling through Adath Jeshurun
must first speak with Rabbi Adam Titcher at 952.545.2424.
Learn to Read Hebrew!
Tuesdays Evenings Beginning October 30
Learn the alef-bet, phonetic Hebrew reading and homebased
prayer skills, your building blocks to active participation
in Jewish life. You will learn and practice Shabbat home
rituals and holiday blessings and songs, so you can be fully
engaged in your Jewish life and the life of your family. This
class meets weekly on Tuesdays evenings, October 30
through April 23, at 6:30-7:30 PM. It is led by Rachel Levitt.
Fee: $125/person, $160/couple, payable to Adath Jeshurun.
All class fees can be adjusted according to need. To sign
up or for further information contact Nina Samuels at
us on Tuesdays at 12 noon at the synagogue
for study related to the weekly parsha (Torah
portion), led by Rabbi Kravitz, Rabbi
Titcher, Rabbi Weininger and Jim
is always stimulating. We start at the
beginning again on October 16 with a dairy/
vegetarian potluck lunch.
Etzion Study Group—Senior adults meet monthly on
Monday afternoons, at 1:30-3:00 PM in the Adult Lounge,
for relaxed socializing, refreshments and spirited discussions
on issues that relate to our lives, centered on current
books and articles with Jewish themes. Discussion is led
by Jim Sherman. Join them on October 15.
Israeli Book Discussion Group—Join an enthusiastic
book group to discuss some of the best contemporary
Israeli fiction (in English translation). This group meets on
November 5 at 7:30 PM with discussion of Bliss by Ronit
Matalon. Eilat Harel of the Israel Center leads discussion.
Downtown Study Group—Rabbi Kravitz leads a
lively group in exploring the development of mitzvot from
Biblical to modern times and into the future, applying their
learning to their own experience. They are using the book
Walking with Mitzvot, published on-line by American Jewish
University. Starting on October 16, they meet two Tuesdays
a month at 12 noon in the US Bank Plaza building.
Weekly Talmud Study—Many
times we wonder how all of this came
about – Jewish laws, prayers, God
and we simply say, it is all in the Torah!
But that is not the case. The core of our
religion is discussed and formulated in
the Talmud, an ancient rabbinic text
developed post second Temple Jewish experience in exile.
Beginning on October 17, Rabbi Titcher will be leading a
Talmud Study group Wednesday mornings at 8:00 AM
following the daily minyan.
If you have never studied Talmud before but have wondered
about it, you are encouraged to join! If you are looking
for a provocative conversation with Jewish thinkers
across the table and across the centuries, this is the class
for you too! We will start the year with the tractates Brachot
(Blessings) and Shabbat.
Calling All Emtza Region USY Alums!
USY at 60
October 14 Twin Cities Celebration
Just talk to a synagogue president, rabbi, Jewish educator,
or anyone else in the forefront of Jewish life, and chances
are you will find someone whose Jewish identity and passion
were nurtured through USY. In a myriad of ways, USY has shaped the lives
of more than 250,000 North American Jewish teens. It also has nurtured
countless leaders in Conservative Judaism and in the larger Jewish world.
On Sunday, October 14, 6-10 PM at Beth El Synagogue, the celebration of
USY’s 60 th birthday comes “home” to the Twin Cities, whose EMTZA region is
the birthplace of USY. We will honor the synagogues that were involved in
forming USY and have helped it flourish in the Twin Cities, with a special
tribute to Rabbi Kassel Abelson, rabbi emeritus of Beth El and past president
of the Rabbinical Assembly, and Rabbi Bernard S. Raskas z”l, who served as
the longtime rabbi and rabbi emeritus at Temple of Aaron.
Funds raised will support the USY Founders Fund, providing more Jewish
teens the opportunity to participate in USY’s transformative programs.
To purchase tickets, place a journal ad, share your USY story, or get involved
Twin Cities Jewish Book Fair
Beautiful Souls: Saying No,
Breaking Ranks, and Heeding the
Voice of Conscience in Dark Times
October 28 at the St. Paul JCC

Journalist Eyal Press
will speak at the St.
Paul JCC on Sunday,
October 28, at 7 PM,
as part of the 2012
Twin Cities Jewish
Book Fair. Through
the dramatic stories
of unlikely resisters,
his new book
Beautiful Souls maps out what impels
ordinary people to defy the sway of
authority and convention. Eyal Press
is a contributing writer to The Nation
magazine.
Adath Jeshurun is a community
sponsor of this event, and Adath
members are eligible for the sponsor/
member price of $6. The Book Fair is
presented by the St. Paul JCC with
Library and support from the George
Mazal Tov to Zach and Alex
Maccabi Games Gold Medalists
Mazal Tov to Adath teens Zach
Condon and Alex Lehman, who were
part of the boys’ basketball team from
the St. Paul delegation which took
the Gold Medal in the 2012 Maccabi
Games in Houston. The eight players
defeated a team from Orange County,
California in overtime play to win the
Gold Medal. According to their coach
Jon Gallop “These games were not
about the wins or medals, but the
camaraderie with the other participants.
I was so proud of how these
boys conducted themselves on and
off the field.”
The JCC Maccabi Games® are a
week-long international sporting event
for Jewish athletes ages 13-16, held
each year in North America. The
experience includes opening ceremonies,
intense competitions and
community service projects.

One of the pillars of Adath Jeshurun Congregation is Gemilut Hasadim (acts of
loving kindness). This is reflected in the first "bold statement" that guides Adath's
future as "we support each other throughout all stages of life and in times of joy
and times of need".
One of the ways we carry out this responsibility is through Adath's Caring Community:
Yad Sima Tova, a group of volunteers with whom I work closely as your
Congregational Nurse. Among many other good deeds, Yad Sima Tova offers
meals to individuals and their families in need of assistance while ill or after returning
home from the hospital or nursing home.
After a recent delivery of meals to a family with a new baby, we received a letter
of thanks. Here's what it said, in part:
"We want to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the
wonderful support you provided when we most needed it.
Please don't underestimate the loving care you provide
to people in their times of both despair and joy.
You bring assistance and warmth into the hearts and
homes of people in need."
This help was provided through a joint effort of Yad Sima Tova and the Congregational
Nurse Program. We recently started a program in which a Yad Sima
Tova volunteer calls the congregant or family after hospital discharge to assure
that all is going well, to convey wishes of refuah shlemah (complete healing),
and to offer help. As your Congregational Nurse I receive names of congregants
who have been hospitalized and pass these on to the volunteer. A call to the
congregant or family is made a week or so after hospital discharge.
In this particular instance, the family told our phone volunteer that they would
very much appreciate getting meals through Yad Sima Tova. The volunteer
notified me and I passed on the information to our Yad Sima Tova co-chairs,
who arranged to deliver meals to the family.
As is clear from the thank you note above, such support and care is very much
appreciated. We would like to be able to offer such support to as many Adath
congregants as possible. To do that, we need your help—as volunteers for Yad
Sima Tova and with information about hospitalizations within our community.
Please encourage your family members to let Adath know when they are hospitalized,
so that our clergy may visit them and we can offer our support during
and after hospitalization. And please let me, or the Yad Sima Tova co-chairs Sari
Lederman and Kim Gedan, know of your interest in helping with this important
act of outreach and Gemilut Hasadim.
Ben and Miriam Kaitz’s Melodies Live On
Through Scholarship Fund
The rabbis say “Im ain kemach
ain Torah,” i.e. without proper
support, we cannot ensure a
future generation of committed
Jews. Ben and Miriam Kaitz
understood this message and
accepted the challenge.
Throughout their lives, they
were at the forefront supporting
the State of Israel and its
people, realizing its importance to Jewish continuity.
In addition to being icons in the beauty industry, Ben and
Miriam were prolific songwriters and even serenaded David
Ben Gurion on his 80 th birthday with a song written for the
occasion, “April in Israel.” The couple had an enduring love
for one another and for the Jewish people until Ben’s
passing in 2004, followed by his beloved Miriam in 2007.
Recently, their son Richard Kaitz and his family decided to
honor their parents’ memory by establishing the Ben and
Miriam Kaitz Family Scholarship Fund in the Adath
Jeshurun Foundation. This Fund will provide need-based
scholarships to young people of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation
for Jewish summer camp and Israel experiences.
“These experiences exert a powerful influence on the lives
of our young people with proven impact on their continued
Jewish commitment,” says Rabbi Harold Kravitz.
We will continue to sing our praises to the Kaitz family as
their scholarships will make an impact on our congregation
for this and future generations.
named endowment fund, please contact Jennifer Herman
