Executive Director – Robert Fukuda Athlete Scholar of the Year Last year, we changed the deadlines in an effort to allow for greater participation in the Athlete Scholar of the Year Award Program. The application deadline is now in August of each year, this allows students who have longer academic years to complete their school year and have their transcripts available so that they may be eligible to submit their application for consideration. This past summer’s winners were: 1 st Place Cindy M. Imai School: Rosemead High School GPA: 3.929 Dojo: Mojica Judo Club YDK: Nanka 2 nd Place Lisa M. Uemura School: Salinas High School GPA: 4.00 Dojo: Salinas Judo Club YDK: Hokka 3 rd Place Michael M. Eldred School: Fruitland High School GPA: 3.829 Dojo: Western Idaho Judo Institute YDK: Daiheigen Each year the ASOY attracts our best and brightest athletes and scholars. Please help to ensure the success of this program by encouraging your judoka to submit their applications for consideration. We will be reviewing this years applicants and the winners will be announced at our annual Junior, Youth, Team, and Kata National Championships in Florida next summer. Page 26 of 48
Development Committee – Dr. David Matsumoto USJF Development Committee Meeting Agenda and Minutes 10 October 2001 Las Vegas, NV I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. by David Matsumoto. In attendance were the following people: Committee members: Takemori, Mitsuoka, Nishioka, Shepherd, Glaze (non-voting co-chair of Kata Subcommittee), Matsumoto Observers: Bert Mackey, Bryan Matsuoka, Rich Petherbridge, Jim Pennington, Mary Gail Ford, Ed Shiosaki, Ann Marie Rousey, Ken Tamai, Joseph Fitzsimmons, Mitchell Palacio, George Balch, Dennis Yonetani II. Approval of the Minutes The minutes were MSP to be approved as drafted and distributed. III. Reports A. Chair 1. Approval of actions in between meetings - None 2. PR Position. Matsumoto reported on the hiring of Tanith Baliban from Arizona to fill the PR position. She will be working to produce monthly newsletters of Development Committee activities. She will call relevant project managers and ydk presidents for information concerning USJF funded programs. Please provide her with whatever information is requested. B. Vice Chair. No report. Absent. C. Subcommittee reports and progress on duties and responsibilities 1. Jr. Development (Mitsuoka). Oral report given during the meeting. See attached for written report if provided. 2. Sr. Development (Takemori). Oral report given during the meeting. See attached for written report if provided. 3. Teacher’s Institute (Nishioka). Oral report given during the meeting. See attached for written report if provided. 4. Technical Research (Ashida). No report. Absent. 5. Referee Development and Certification (Hugh). No report. Absent. 6. Kata (Shepherd). Oral report given during the meeting. See attached for written report if provided. D. Approval of all reports. It was MSP to approve all reports given. All subcommittee chairs are instructed to provide their reports in writing for inclusion with these minutes. IV. Unfinished Business A. National Programs 1. National Teacher’s Institute. Matsumoto reported on this program, which is a major funded initiative of the USJF. Arrival date 5 June, clinic dates 6-8 June, and departure date 9 June 2002. Venue is San Francisco State University. Matsumoto is reviewing contracts now. Flyers and forms to be sent out January 2002. It is the goal of the Development Committee to have at least one person from each USJF dojo participate and get certified. All assistant instructors ikkyu and up are eligible to participate. 2. National Kata Seminar. Matsumoto reported on this program. Arrival date 9 June, clinic dates 10-12 June, departure date 13 June 2002. Venue is San Francisco State University. Flyers and Page 27 of 48
