We had a great year and we are all very proud of all the newly certified individuals as well as continued work by our more experienced referees. George C. Balch Memorial Scholarship – James Cornforth George C. Balch Education Scholarship Fund Chairman’s Report Fiscal 2002 (ending Aug. 2002) Committee: 1. Elizabeth Balch, Honorary 5. Dir Just before Mr. George Balch (Shichidan, friend and loyal supporter of USJF since its inception) passed away on March 22, 2002, a warm outpouring of gifts and sentiments to honor his life and his contributions to judo began arriving from friends. It became the desire of Mr. Balch and his family to establish a living tribute in his name by using the funds as a scholarship for judo student(s): worthy young people who would become active judo leadership in the future. With that impetus, Mr. Jim Cornforth, one of Mr. Balch’s closest friends, accepted the responsibility to chair a USJF program to raise funds and promote the program. Mr. Robert Brink and Mr. Hayward Nishioka accepted the responsibility to also serve on the committee. Mrs. Elizabeth Balch serves in an honorary capacity. The committee has made considerable progress this year. A professionally designed interpretive brochure and scholarship application has been developed and is being distributed. Mrs. Balch played a major role in finalizing the look of the brochure. Committee thanks go to Mr. Noboru Saito, the Saito Dojo and Michigan Judo Development Association for the seed money, which helped fund the developmental stages of the program. Through some very kind and generous contributions, $14,610 has been raised so far. There is an additional $5100 in pledges due. This money has been entrusted to the USJF Endowment Program for investment purposes. It is currently invested in the Money Market and is earning 1.8% interest. When the market stabilizes, other investment avenues will be considered. The committee has set a modest goal of adding an additional $3000 to the principle each year by soliciting contributions. It is the goal of the George C Balch Scholarship Fund to assist college bound student(s) who are planning on entering the education field with annual stipends of up to $1000 per year. The candidates must be active USJF members and they must maintain their membership affiliation with USJF in order to remain eligible for continued funding. The exact amount to be awarded will be dependent upon the earning capacity of the principle in the fund. Contributions to the George C. Balch Scholarship Fund may be made directly to the Endowment Fund of the United States Judo Federation. Donors should specify their desire for their contribution to be for the George C. Balch Scholarship to avoid any confusion. Brochures and applications are available through the USJF National Office. They may also be downloaded by visiting the USJF website.
