Junior & Youth Development Subcommittee – Chris Mitsuoka Junior & Youth Development Subcommittee <strong>Fiscal</strong> <strong>2002</strong> Report The USJF Junior Nationals in Sacramento were well attended and the Judo gis provided by Seka Sports to eligible first place winners were very popular. HSU Imports provided epaulets for all place winners in return for a full page advertisement. The USJF paid the tournament sponsors for the placement of the advertisement. Seka Sports and HSU Imports provided support personnel during the tournament as well as following up after the event. This kind of partnership can hopefully be continued in the future. The tournament sponsor decided not to award any outstanding competitor awards. There were inquires as to whether or not nominations would be accepted. To date, it is at the discretion of the sponsor to decide whether or not to award outstanding competitors. This practice should be standardized for future events. The new age brackets were used to match the USJI Jr Olympics and international events for the younger age brackets. This did not cause any confusion or complaints. Florida will be the site for the 2003 USJF Junior Nationals. Outstanding Athlete Awards were presented for the junior and youth competitors. The new criteria using points for determining the recipient worked well for those classes that the USJI keeps a point log. The younger category that relies on nominations from the YDK presidents was poorly represented again. This category needs to be visited again to determine if there is value in continuing to present an award in this age bracket. The RFP for a new program that improves recruitment and retention of Judo players was submitted on the web. Two proposals from one YDK were submitted.
