Ex-SAS Author Chris Ryan
visits Salford City Academy
Year 9 and 10 students at Salford City Academy welcomed
Chris Ryan, former British Special Air Services soldier turned
novelist, in November. He gripped the students with actionpacked
tales of his time in the SAS in a bid to motivate students
to enjoy writing and reading.
The sessions brought literacy to life for the students, as Chris
spent time relating his real-life adventures, such as escaping
from the notorious Bravo Two Zero mission during the Gulf
War. He also spent time talking individually to students and
staff and signing copies of his books.
Martin Moseley, a Year 10 librarian at the academy, was chosen
to assist on the day. He said: “The sessions went really well
and inspired both year groups. I really enjoyed the opportunity
to meet Chris and have my photo taken with him!”
doctors
Mahum Naeem, a Year 13 pupil at Hull Collegiate School,
embarked on a challenging summer work experience programme,
shadowing consultants, nurses and other clinicians working in
mental health.
Mahum was one of two applicants chosen from a highly
competitive pool of aspiring doctors. She spent three weeks
in different clinical areas learning about all aspects of mental
healthcare.
Mahum said: “I had quite a lot of contact with patients, which
was great, and I did some home visits with a CPN. I spent time
with the crisis team and got an overview of different mental
health conditions. The whole experience has been absolutely
brilliant.”
