MGDS Media Bank: http://media.marine-geo.org/<br />

Media Bank is an online repository of high-quality<br />

images, videos, illustrations and animations<br />

suitable for use within the scientific community<br />

and for education and public outreach (EPO), that<br />

is hosted by the Marine Geoscience Data System<br />

(MGDS). The initial focus of Media Bank was to<br />

serve USA Ridge 2000 research and EPO efforts,<br />

but it was constructed as a flexible system that<br />

could accommodate media from other multidisciplinary<br />

marine geoscience research initiatives.<br />

Images and videos in the gallery can be browsed<br />

as thumbnails or as preview images (Fig. 1). A full<br />

suite of metadata is provided for each image, enabling<br />

links to relevant cruises and database entries<br />

(Fig. 2). Images are tagged with metadata to<br />

provide keyword search functionality and are sorted<br />

into categories (e.g., Geology, Biology). Keywords<br />

can also be included in the URL to enable<br />

direct links to images. For example, http://media.<br />

marine-geo.org/search/node/EPR will assemble all<br />

images from the East Pacific Rise.<br />

We encourage the contribution of high-quality<br />

media for inclusion in the Media Bank, and we<br />

can accommodate restricted downloads of full<strong>resolution</strong><br />

images. For more information on<br />
