Nicole Johnson to Speak at Women’s Cancer Awareness Event
Look at a painting or listen to a song and
it’s easy to understand how art enhances
life. But come this October, the arts will
save lives at Emanuel Medical Center’s
13th annual Women’s Cancer
Awareness Event.
Presented by Emanuel Regional Cancer
Services, the awareness-raising event on
October 12 is themed “The Art of Life” and
will be an evening that celebrates the arts
in all their forms – visual, vocal, dance
and drama.
“It is going to be a wonderful event, and
we’re thrilled to have bestselling author,
performer and motivational speaker Nicole
Johnson as our headliner,” said Pennie
Rorex, Emanuel’s assistant vice president of
corporate communication and marketing.
“Nicole is best known for her debut
book, ‘Fresh Brewed Life,’ but is also an
incredible sketch writer and performer.”
Johnson, a sought-after speaker at
Women of Faith events nationwide, will be
performing “Stepping into the Ring,” her
vignette about a woman battling breast
cancer, and giving a motivational speech.
“It’s a very moving performance,”
Rorex said.
Joining Johnson at The Art of Life event will
be dancer Melissa Sandvig, a Southern
California ballerina best known for her
appearance on the TV dance competition
“So You Think You Can Dance.” She’ll be
performing a Tyce Diorio-choreographed
dance about a woman with breast cancer
that brought the judges on the show to
tears. Sandvig performed the dance on
the show with contemporary dancer Ade
Obayomi, but her partner for this event
had not been confirmed at press time.
The evening will also feature the alwaysmoving
cancer survivor’s march – this

year accompanied by a live choir – and
a poster contest focused on raising
awareness of breast, gynecological and
ovarian cancer within our community. The
entries will be featured at the event and
the winner will be announced that evening.
The winning piece will then be used as
part of the hospital’s future Women’s
Cancer Awareness marketing campaign.
“It’s going to be a fantastic night of
creating awareness and using art to save
lives,” Rorex said.
The event will be held at
Monte Vista Chapel at 1619 E. Monte
Vista Ave. beginning with hosted hors
d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. The auditorium will
open at 6:45 p.m., with the performance
events beginning at 7:15 p.m.
Tickets are free, but must be reserved on a
first-come, first-served basis. Receive early

of reserving tickets before the
general public.
