SUMMER 2010 Dear Friends, Thinking back over the past decade, it’s almost hard to remember what Emanuel Medical Center looked like 10 years ago. There was no Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center. We didn’t have our three-story, cutting-edge critical care center. Emanuel Regional Cancer Services didn’t exist, and there were no state-of-the-art cancer treatments or technologies to be found anywhere in Turlock. It makes us very proud to see these facilities and services and know they are making a real difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors in the greater Turlock area. But it should make you, the members of this great community, even more proud. Because none of it could have happened without your support. As you’ll read in this issue of HeartBeat, we’re planning the next expansion of Emanuel services – building a comprehensive cardiac care program so no one in our community will have to be transported out of the area for heart care. It’s a program we’ve been planning and building slowly for many years, and now it’s becoming a reality. We invite you to join us in bringing these much-needed services to Turlock. If you’ve never before given to Legacy Circle, our annual giving program, we ask that you make this the year that you begin. Our donors can walk almost anywhere around this hospital and see new lifesaving technology and services they helped bring to Turlock. We love hearing their stories, and the pride in their voices, when they tell us how it makes them feel. We invite you to share in that feeling. Heart disease is the country’s leading killer of both men and women, and bringing state-of-the-art heart care to Turlock will save lives in our community. In this issue, you’ll meet some of the talented physicians bringing this program to Emanuel, learn about our five-year plan to expand cardiac care, and read the stories of people in the community who know the value of having high-quality heart care close at hand. SUMMER 2010 Giving to Emanuel: The Ferraris Follow their Hearts Turlock’s Jeani and John Ferrari have a simple philosophy: Giving is good. The couple has been living that philosophy for the past 33 years as regular and generous donors to Emanuel Medical Center. But this year they’ve super-sized their commitment. This year the Ferraris put up a $500,000 gift challenge, an incentive for Legacy Circle donors to raise $1 million for Emanuel’s new cardiac program which will bring state-of-the-art heart care to Turlock. When the community raises that million, the Ferraris will donate a half million more. “We always hope our gifts stimulate gifts from others who might not have otherwise given,” John says. “This is a way to do that, and generate a bigger pot of money for the hospital.” Jeani, who also volunteers at Emanuel Regional Cancer Services, says she finds donating to a good cause a joyful experience. “I know people say it’s not a good time to ask the community for money, but I have a great attitude about it,” she explains. “I think a giver’s enthusiasm affects people, they then have the opportunity to experience the same joy we’re experiencing. Giving to such a good cause makes you feel like a hero.” John shares her enthusiasm. Just ask anyone who meets him during a Legacy Circle campaign. “John is a great team person and always a top performer,” Jeani says proudly. “We’ll go to a restaurant where we eat frequently and if the waitperson is someone who knows us, John will start talking about the “I think a giver’s enthusiasm affects people, and they then have the opportunity to experience the same joy we’re experiencing. Before we leave, he’ll have an address to send them more information. “His attitude is that if he tells someone about the hospital and gets them involved, they’ll be lifelong supporters,” Jeani says. John explains why. “The fundamental basis for our support of Emanuel Medical Center is that it’s our community hospital. Jeani and I have talked about this a number of times and we cannot come up with another opportunity to touch so many people’s lives. If you live in this community, one day you will need Emanuel. And I believe that once you give to Emanuel and see the important work it’s doing, you’ll stay involved for a very long time.” The Ferraris have been thrilled with all the new programs, services and facilities Emanuel and Legacy Circle volunteers and donors have built in the past 10 years – Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center, emergency department, cancer endowment and now state-of-the-art cardiac services. “This is the most exciting thing since the last exciting thing at Emanuel Medical Center”, says John. “In the past 10 years this hospital has grown by leaps and bounds.” “People talk about bucket lists,” Jeani says. “For me, the things on my bucket list are doing as much as I can for the community. This is my opportunity at this time in my life, and it’s been so much fun, it really has.” John smiles. “It’s exciting living with Jeani,” he says. “I have no idea what we’ll be involved with five years from now – but I know we will still be involved with Emanuel.” And that’s good news for everyone in the community. 3
