Principal’s Report
Term 2 is always a busy time for students
preparing for exams. Years 7 and 9 have just
completed NAPLAN testing, as has the Year 11 mid
course testing cycle. Year 9 and 10 exams start on
Friday 31 May and finish the following Friday
before the long weekend. Good luck to all our
students!
Our school musical is currently in rehearsal. “Alice
in Wonderland” is a wonderful collaboration of
students and staff. I am looking forward to the
production in August and I am sure their hard
work will be appreciated by a packed audience!
Our CAPA faculty and students have been showing
their expertise in The Carillon Theatrical Society’s
current season of The Wizard of Oz and our
fabulous dance troupe have been successful with
their audition for the School Spectacular this year.
Well done!
Congratulations to Jessica Daymond and Morgan
Sherman who have represented Western Region in
Albury for Girls’ Football at the State
Championships. Jessica was selected in the NSW
Combined High Schools 1 st X1 as goal keeper. This
is an outstanding achievement.
We are proud of our students who are achieving
wonderful accolades across sporting, academic and
cultural arenas, but we are also proud of the
students who volunteer in our community. On our
last assembly, Nancy Haslop from Life Education
presented a group of twelve Year 9 students with a
certificate of appreciation for their help with
Healthy Harold during The Bathurst Show.
I would like to encourage parents to attend our
“Teenagers, Teasing and Technology” workshops
on the 19 th June. There will be some wonderful
information you can use to work with your teens
including internet and mobile phone tools. In
attendance there will be a panel of representatives
from Veritas House, Headspace and others who
can provide their expertise and support.
College Principal’s Report
Craig Petersen, the Denison College Principal, has
been invited by the Department of Education and
Communities to lead the implementation phase of
the Rural Education strategy for NSW. This will
mean Craig will be replaced in the Principal’s
position by myself, Keith Peasley, the Principal of
Kelso High Campus. This will be for about six
weeks.
Following that period, Craig will be relieving in the
Director of Schools – Bathurst role for Peter
Harvey until the end of the term. Stephanie Brown
will relieve in the Campus Principal position at
Kelso High for the whole of Term 2, with Rob
Bartulovich as relieving Deputy Principal.
The term is full of events, starting with the Year 6
Information Evenings at both campuses on
Tuesday 7 th May. These evenings provided both
campuses with the opportunity to give families
details of their approach to learning and the
opportunities that exist for students. There were
great attendances at both venues.
Monday 13 th May also saw Judith Bertolin from the
Junior College Team travel to Sydney with me for a
NSW Colleges’ meeting. Judith, who is renowned
for her innovative approach to Middle School
teaching, will showcase the current Gifted and
Talented focus in the college. It is a credit to the
work of Judith at Bathurst and Richard McFarlane
at Kelso that their efforts and vision are so
recognised.
Also late in the term are the HSC Seminars at
Charles Sturt University. Wendy Murphy and
James Browning, the Senior College Team, have
compiled a list of experienced and talented
presenters, including Christine Anu, for the day. All
HSC subjects traditionally studied in the Central
West will be addressed by teachers who have a
proven record of excellence in teaching and
marking the HSC. I encourage all Year 12 students
to attend this day as it will be a wonderful “fine
tune” for their HSC preparation. Stay tuned for
details.
The HYLITE program commenced at Headspace
this week, providing a study space and tutor
support for students experiencing difficulties at
Denison College, and also other young people
seeking to reengage with learning. Lucy Spora and
the team at Headspace have created an excellent
program, and the college will provide regular
support for staff and clients.
School Within a School commences Term 2 with an
enhanced program that incorporates a strong
Work Placement component. This will give a
realistic application to the Workskills and
Hospitality training the students are undertaking. I
thank Denis Behan, the Project Officer, for his
tireless work in helping create these opportunities.
Blitz It!!!
The PBL team (Positive Behaviour for Learning)
carried out a blitz on students in Week 7. The area
of concern was the equipment needed for every
lesson. Overall the school uniform has been
excellent. If your child participates in a practical
subject they may require additional or different
footwear.
However, it is expected that stationary equipment
is similar in most areas. Computers, books, texts
and calculators when needed, are made known to
all students. From the school wide blitz, only 64
students had been recorded as not bringing the
correct equipment on 2 occasions within the 1
week of data collection. Therefore, 93% of
students consistently have correct equipment in all
their classes. Well done!
Mock Trial
The second round of this state-wide competition
saw our team compete against Lithgow High
School in Lithgow on Tuesday 2nd April. We were
the defence in a criminal case. The defendant (Ben
Geerkens) was charged with arson. The
prosecution claim that Ben had set fire to the local
Youth Centre. Ben and our second witness
(Cassandra Talbot) very confidently stated their
side of the story and coped with cross examination
from the Lithgow barristers. They claim that they
were at a local hotel at the time the fire was alleged
to have been started.
Our barristers, Louis Meurant and Zac Baker
prepared impressive opening and closing
addresses, questioned our witnesses and crossexamined
the police officer who arrested Ben and
the eye witness who claimed to have seen Ben light
the fire. They were ably assisted by Lauren
Gottschau as solicitor. The final member of the
team for this round was Dominic Grabham-
Johnson who was a very efficient court officer.
The judge (a local Lithgow solicitor) agreed with
our version of events and acquitted Ben. We also
won the points section of the trial where each team
member is awarded points based on how well they
perform in their allocated role.
The team is now looking forward to the next round
to be completed by late May.
Year 10 and 11 Textiles Excursion to Sydney
Year 10 and 11 Textiles and Design students were
inspired by the items on display at the Stitches and
Craft Show and Student Fashion Exhibition when
we travelled to Sydney in Term 1.
After an early start on the “Bullet”, we were able to
study the practical items and associated portfolios
in Texstyle at Rosehill Race Course. This exhibition
displayed a selection of the best 2012 HSC Textiles
and Design projects from each of the five focus
areas including costumes, textile artworks, fashion,
furnishings and textile items used in other areas of
our lives. The work was amazing and, while we
decided that we might not want to wear some of
the fashions ourselves, we could certainly
appreciate the creativity and proficient
workmanship in the items. Sarah Harvey also
attended the HSC Seminar where she was able to
gain some valuable information about the portfolio
she will prepare for her HSC next year.
After browsing the rest of the huge Stitches and
Craft Show at Rosehill, we had a leisurely cruise by
ferry down the Parramatta River en route to the
Powerhouse Museum at Darling Harbour. From the
front deck of the rivercat we enjoyed views of the
waterfront mansions, including the privately
owned boats moored near their backyards! As we
walked up Darling Harbour we saw Leonardo
DiCaprio just standing there in the mall
(well...actually, his wax figure in the Madame
Tussauds show!) and were also lucky enough to
see two koalas on display which, for some of us,
was the closest we had ever been to the cute
creatures.
The Student Fashion Exhibition showcased the
work of the top fashion graduates from East
Sydney TAFE, The Whitehouse School of Fashion
and UTS and provided our students with the
opportunity to explore some of their own ideas in a
hands-on activity at the Powerhouse Museum.
We look forward to more inspiring textiles
excursions in the future.
The senior girls’ soccer team played Blayney High
in the 2 nd round of the CHS Errea Cup on the Kelso
High School oval. This was our first game for the
year and so the girls may have felt rusty but their
soccer skills soon began to show. The teamwork
between the girls was very good with much of our
passing finding the mark ; this will only improve as
the season progresses.
Our attack found gaps in the Blayney defence
which led to Tegan Kilby scoring our first goal. We
could have scored more often with many shots
going over the post or just to the side. Caitlin
Morris scored our next goal but it was little sister
Sarah who scored the third goal from half way.
Morgan Sherman scored our fourth and final goal.
Our defence was solid across the field with Sarah
Morris, Kelly Baker, Courtney Downey, Olivia
Sheehan and Cassandra Talbot shutting down the
Blayney defence. Sarah in particular stood out as
she is only in Year 7 but played with a maturity
well above her young age. In the middle Morgan
and Kelsey Sherman both controlled the game well
to set up our attack. A great result from the team.
The final score was 4 goals to 1.
Morgan Sherman and Jessica Daymond have also
both been selected in the Western Region team.
This is Jessica’s fifth year of being a Western
Region Representative. Also during the Christmas
holidays Jessica was selected in a national
invitational soccer team which competed in a
tournament in Fiji. The Australian team finished
second with Jessica being selected as goalie in the
International team.
Senior Boys Football
The KHC senior boys’ football team played Blayney
High School in round two of the CHS competition,
after receiving a bye in round one. The game took
place on the school oval, which is presently in
excellent condition. Kelso ran out eventual winners
by five goals to nil.
After a relatively slow start the Kelso High team
gradually took the ascendency and were far too
skilful and too determined for the opposition.
Kelso were very ably led by their captain Andrew
Christie. Other players to excel were Lachlan
Thomas, Jeremy Judge, Nick Barber, Michael Betts
and Hayden James. The rest of the team all played
well, and they included;
Callum Christie, Jarrah Hale, Zac Morrison, James
Baker, Nathan Doungmanee, Jacob Anderson, Bill
Watterson, Sam Gale, Jahziel Iapson.
In the next round the opposition will be Parkes
High School to be played in Parkes.
Facts, figures and fiction about the numbers 91,
92 & 93
91 is a triangular number & a pyramidal
number as it is the sum of the 1 st 6 square
numbers
A ‘double 12’ set of dominos has 91 pieces
How many squares can you find in this 6 by 6
square (should get 91!)
The highest atomic number for a naturally
occurring element is 92 – for Uranium
With 9 cuts a potato can be cut into 93 pieces –
try it!
Solution to Stroevey Challenge 183
7 coins!
There are five different ways to make $1.10 with
seven coins. You can’t use a $1 coin – it’s too big.
You can’t use two 50c coins either. With one 50c
coin, you can make:
(50c, 20c, 20c, 5c, 5c, 5c, 5c) or (50c, 20c, 10c, 10c,
10c, 5c, 5c) or (50c, 10c, 10c, 10c, 10c, 10c, 10c)
With no 50c coins, you can make: (20c, 20c, 20c,
20c, 20c, 5c, 5c) or (20c, 20c, 20c, 20c, 10c, 10c,
10c) And that’s all the combinations you can
make.
