Principal’s Report
Welcome everyone to the new 2013 school year
at Kelso High Campus. I have met the friendliest
and most keen group of Year 7 students these last
few days. I have seen them utterly exhausted after
the first days; however there is a spring in their
collective steps this week. A really impressive
group who I am sure will uphold Kelso’s proud
reputation for being caring, responsible achievers.
I can vouch for the success of the iLearn program
last year, in that we have very few lost souls – well
done all of you.
As sharp as….
The standard of uniform this year has been
outstanding, and I thank not only the students but
also their parents and carers for taking the time to
have the right clothing. It is a comfortable and
practical uniform, and students who consistently
wear it are recognised in our merit system.
Remember that autumn is not far away, so take
steps to have the hoodie or polar fleece top ready
to go. And remember that Raben style canvas
shoes are never acceptable due to safety concerns,
and also due to the total lack of support the shoe
provides.
Any excuse for a BBQ
Families of Year 7 will receive an invitation to a
welcome BBQ at the school on 19 th February in the
late afternoon. There will be games, music, free
food, staff present, and some welcome messages. It
would be great to see you there with your family. A
great time to meet, have a chat, and put names to
faces.
Every class, every day
This is the catchphrase for 2013. To explain; if a
student is in class regularly, they have a greater
chance of understanding the work the class is
doing. They therefore feel more confident and
focused, and indeed quite a bit happier. This is
then the start of ongoing academic improvement
and achievement. This applies to any student of
any ability – every class, every day. I see students
who don’t attend school enough becoming
frustrated and embarrassed when they cannot
understand the work because they have been
away. It can be difficult to ask the teacher for help,
and a bit embarrassing for some.
“I can’t do it” then follows, and then even more
problems, including the temptation to stop trying.
Remember – every class, every day.

Recognition for outstanding achievement!
Over 50 students from both campuses of Denison
College were recognised for their outstanding
achievements at the annual High Achievers’
Reception held at Charles Sturt University on
Wednesday afternoon.
Students who achieved in the top performance
band in the 2012 HSC or who achieved outstanding
results across a range of subjects in Year 11 or
Year 10 received their awards in front of over 140
guests including Col Sharp (CSU Bathurst Head of
Campus), Carole McDiarmid (Regional Director,
Western NSW Region) and Peter Harvey (School
Education Director, Bathurst).
I congratulate all the award recipients, their
families and their teachers who have all
contributed to this excellent result!
School Within a School
SWAS commenced for the year on Monday 4 th
February. It targets a small group of students in
Year 10 and provides an alternate pathway for
those who might otherwise find it difficult to
engage with mainstream curriculum.
In partnership with a number of agencies,
including TAFE, Verto, headspace and Octec Youth
Connections this program has proven successful in
helping young people to achieve a number of very
worthwhile credentials and go on to either
continue their studies in Year 11, or transition into
the workforce.
In fact, the success of the program saw Denison
College receive the Director-General’s Award for
School Achievement at the end of 2012.
Shared Courses = Expanded Opportunities
Those senior students studying shared courses
commenced their lessons on Monday 4 th February.
The shared courses mean that senior students can
have access to subjects at both campuses. This is a
feature of the college which means that we can run
more courses and make sure that we are getting
the very best out of the resources at our disposal.
It can sometimes be a bit daunting starting a
course at the other campus for the first time, but
results over the last five years show that students
successfully undertaking and completing shared
courses perform very well in the HSC.
Mrs Murphy (KHC) and Mr Browning (BHC) are
responsible for co-ordinating transport and
ensuring that everything runs as smoothly as
possible. Please contact them if they can be of any
assistance in relation to shared courses.

Year 11 2013
Congratulations to Year 11 who have started their
senior studies in an exemplary manner. Last week
they received their Assessment Booklets, a study
calendar and their Senior Agreements. They also
participated in the compulsory ‘All My Own Work’
program provided by the NSW Board of Studies.

I congratulate all students on their approach to
these two sessions and hope it stands them in good
stead for their senior studies.
Combined Campus Excursions in the
Performing Arts
Wednesday 6 February saw senior drama students
from both Kelso and Bathurst High travel to
Sydney to watch performances of the best HSC
Drama works from 2012 at ‘OnStage’. Both Mrs
Williams from Kelso and Ms Burt from Bathurst
High complimented the students on a fabulous day,

and positive interactions when they attended NIDA
workshops as well.
Thursday 7 February saw a similar excursion for
senior Dance students who attended ‘Call Back’
(again showcasing the best HSC Dance
performances from 2012) with teacher Ms Payne
from Kelso Campus and Ms Reid from Bathurst
Campus.
Monday 25 February will see Music students from
Kelso and Bathurst High travel to Sydney to see
‘Encore’.
These excursions are great opportunities for
students and staff from both campuses to work
together in the Performing Arts to maximise
student outcomes in the HSC.

Head Teacher Senior Studies
History/Geography Assignments
Students in Year 10 should have received their
major History/Geography assignment this week in
class. This is a site study booklet based on Kings
Parade/Machattie Park plus some internet and
interview tasks. It is due by 6 th May 2013 and can
be handed in before that date. The actual site work
only takes around 1 hour but it is advisable to do
the assignment sooner rather than leave it until the
last minute. Students have been given further
information by their History/Geography teachers.

Overseas Exchange Opportunity Information
Session
Student Exchange Australia New Zealand, a notfor-profit
organisation registered with all state and
territory departments of education, is pleased to
extend an invitation for Denison College of
Secondary Education students and their families to
attend our next LIVE Online information session
being held on Thursday 21st February. The session
starts at 7.30pm (EDT) / 7.00 pm (CDT) / 6.30pm
(EST) / 6.00pm (CST) / 4.30pm (WST).
The LIVE Online session gives students and
families the opportunity to learn more about
becoming an exchange student and the various
scholarship options that are available for 2013.

Each year we also offer 12 scholarships valued
from $2,500 up to $10,800. Students don't need to
be A-grade to apply and the top language student
doesn't necessarily win.

Musical instruments may be hired for $100 per year.
Open High School courses incur a $50 fee per course per year payable to the School of Distance Ed.
This fee is not refundable.
The Senior Text Book Hire Fee ($50 for 2 years) MUST be paid before textbooks will be issued.
The Technology fee is to cover the costs of providing email for all students, internet usage, printing
cartridges, paper and software used by students in class, in the Library and in Computer Labs.
Payments may be made at the School Office. Payments in instalments are welcome.
Eftpos, Visa and Master cards are accepted.
Assistance is available for those people unable to make payments. Please contact the coordinator,
Ms Brandau to access the Student Assistance Scheme.
