Principal’s Report
There goes summer…
It is always sad to see summer finish, and the slog of
winter approach. Thankfully we all get to come to
school and do exceptional things.
I do hope that your Easter break was restful and full of
reflection and chocolate.
For those summer worshippers, it will be back.
Teachers Learning How Kids Learn?
This was the theme of our School Development Day
held on the first day of Term 2.
The Aboriginal Education Team from Western
Region spent the entire day at Kelso Campus with the
staff from both campuses of the College. Teachers
were able to view learning and culture from the
perspective of Aboriginal students and their families
and learn ways of making learning a more meaningful
process for all children, not just indigenous.
The activities and stories were skilfully led by the
team and the day was a success, in part due to the
efforts of Craig Perry, Adrian Chapple, Wendy
Murphy, Craig Luccarda, Craig Petersen and Suzanne
Kissell. My thanks to them all.
ANZAC
For reasons not yet understood but certainly
appreciated, the ANZAC tradition takes on added
meaning each year. Kelso High remembered the
efforts of so many Australians in so many conflicts at
an assembly on Tuesday 25 th April. Besides the
outstanding respectful behaviour of all those who
attended, the highlight was the honour guard provided
by the local Air Cadet Unit, comprising Jake Miles,
Trent Gedling and Dylan Piggott. Thanks to Mrs
Poole and Mrs Smith for their organisation on the day.
My thanks also to the members of the Leadership
Team who ran the assembly, braved the cold at the
Dawn Service, and attended the march on Anzac Day.
Year 12
Reports are now with Head Teachers and will be on
their way home soon. For many, this is the first real
indication of progress since late 2011. Take note of
the marks, but also read the comments closely. These
are a real pointer to how improvements can be made
where needed. Term 2 is where the difference really
happens, so seek help and plan that study schedule.
NAPLAN
Next week sees the annual NAPLAN testing for Years
7 and 9. It is important that every student completes
these tests to enable the school to track what is
working well overall and what needs attention. Please
ensure your child attends next week to enable you,
them, and the school to focus on areas of
improvement.
Year 6 to 7
Last week saw a great roll up of 2013 Year 7 students
and their families to hear from current students and
our staff about what to expect and gain an insight into
what we do. The school tours were so good that we
had trouble winding up the evening! Thanks to all
those parents who came along, as it shows the depth
of interest and support we enjoy.
The activities in Textiles, Visual Arts, TAS, Maths
and Science were very popular, and my usual thanks
and praise goes to Mr Craig Luccarda for his
organisation and excellent words to the gathering. We
are fortunate to have such a talented and empathetic
educator here at Kelso.
Love Bites
Currently our Year 10 is taking part in the Love Bites
program, which encourages responsible behaviour in
relationships, families and school. The students have
been involved in workshops and activities that prompt
them to think about how they manage boyfriends and
girlfriends, growing up in a house full of family, and
getting the best out of school.
Our thanks to the agencies that have convened these
superbly run workshops.

16 NIL
This was the scoreline when our star studded girls‟
senior hockey team met Oberon HS last week in the
first round of the State Knockout. I was fortunate to
see the second half of the game, and left wondering
how good this side can be. Fabulous skills, a great
work ethic, and so much potential. Hannah Scotney
debuted as coach, and proved to be one of the better
British imports since 1770.
Well done all, and good luck against Cowra in the
next round.
Waste to Art Community Art Competition and
Exhibition 2012
This year Kelso High entered several wearable
artworks into the local Waste to Art competition, held
by the Bathurst Council during April.
Students from Year 10 Visual Design entered the
wearables they had created as part of a design unit
which was based on making clothing out of found
objects. Students used materials such as: bubble wrap,
newspaper, nuts and bolts, bottle tops, milk cartons,
garbage bags and carpet underlay in order to make
their spectacular works of art.
Chloe Fulthorpe was fortunate enough to win her
section of the local competition, with her Industrial
Industries entry. Chloe‟s outfit was based on industry.
It was made from aeroplane packaging, a grinding
disc and a combination of nails, bolts and screws. Her
accessories included earrings, a ring, bracelet and hat.
Chloe‟s wearable will now go on to the Regional
Exhibition which will be held in Forbes during May.
opportunities and contacts for this future. Mark
impressed everyone with his grounded attitude and
generosity to all other competitors. He won $10,000
which will enable him to pursue his career in the
circus arts. The judges Chukky, Tina and Dikko told
Mark they would be seeing him performing around
the world and Tina asked Mark to perform on her
current tour.
We will all watch with pride as Mark rises to stardom.
Mark Graham
Talented aerialist and ex Kelso High student Mark
Graham competed in the grand final for Young Talent
Time last week. Although he didn‟t win on the night,
he certainly impressed the judges with his expressive
routine. Tina Arena called him the “angel of the
hoop”. During the arduous 4 month experience, Mark
has grown as a performer and has learned a great deal
about the industry, developing performance
Greatest Math Puzzles of All Time
No 4: Euler’s Konigsberg Bridges Puzzle
In the town of Konigsberg, is it possible to cross each
of it‟s seven bridges (a to e) over the Pregel River,
which connect 2 islands (B & C) and the mainland (A
& D), without crossing over any bridge twice.
Solutions showing necessary working & your roll
call group should be given to Stroevey. Prizes
always on offer.
Facts, figures and fiction about the numbers 60
• There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an
hour. In measuring angles there are 60 seconds in a
minute, 60 seconds in a degree and 360 degrees in
a revolution. The use of 60 and 360 comes from
the Sumerian and Babylonian mathematics
systems, which were based on 60 (unlike our
decimal system which is based on 10). 60 is a
good choice as it can be divided evenly in so many
ways – 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20,30 and 60.
• The internal angles of an equilateral triangle
measure 60 degrees.
• A weightlifter between 56 and 60 kg is in the
„Featherweight‟ category
• A diamond anniversary celebrates 60 years.
