We have just heard that three Kelso High Campus
girls have been involved in winning the National 16
Years Girls’ Hockey title, with a 3-1 win in the final
in Hobart last week.
Kate Brown was one of the umpires in the final, and
congratulations to her on such a wonderful
achievement for a Year 11 student!
As a result of the week of matches, a national side has
been selected to tour New Zealand and Argentina in
the near future. Out of all the hockey players in the
nation, both Jessica and Sarah Watterson have been
selected in the extended squad. Jessica is in the squad
to tour, and Sarah has been named as a shadow player.
She will join the tour if injury or other commitments
prevents someone else from going.
Both girls deserve every amount of praise and
recognition from all the Kelso High community for
their achievements. The singular devotion shown by
these talented players is now bearing fruit, and we
wish them both well in their new challenges. We sort
of hope someone in the squad cannot tour, as Sarah
deserves to go also.

Hobart, despite the rain and wind.
CKC Cup
No doubt several students have come home with news
about what used to be the Country Energy Cup
triangular visit with Canobolas and Cowra High
Schools. This friendly competition pits three similar
sized schools against each other over three separate
fixtures, and is a great experience for our athletes and
their coaches, who are often students also.
Take the time to ask questions about when and where
games take place and come along for a look.

The Trial HSC exams concluded last week, and now it
is all systems go until the final HSC exams in week 2
of next term. Revision and past papers are absolute
essentials from now on – no excuses.
Please note that the Year 12 muck up does not exist
any more. I have spoken with representatives from
Year 12 about this, and the expectation is that we can
work together to raise funds for charity, as against

in the last week of term, and it will be on site.
Every class, every day
Simple motto, but effective. The attendance
procedures continue to be evaluated here at Kelso,
however there are still some students who are poor
attenders according to our data. In many cases, notes
for absences have not been sent in from home or they
are sent with a student and don’t make it to the roll
teacher.
The easy solution is to keep communicating with the
school. If your child is away from school, please send
in a note the day they return. This saves us all some
troubles.

Rewards & Recognition
Five weeks into term and the merits are flying!!!
We’ve had over 2000 positive acknowledgements to
over 500 students at Kelso High in 25 school weeks.
At the end of semester one, the highest merit earners
in each year group gained a $10 gift voucher. Every
fortnight, I select a random student and give them a
prize for a merit. This is done in class time across all
years. This term there will be a Bronze merit
celebration on August 29 th . The students with the
highest number of merits in their year from years 7 –
11 will participate in a pizza cooking day led by
myself and Mr Miller’s team. These students
attending also have no ESR entries for breaking
school rules.
Whilst a student may have a large number of merits
and be on a level; WHITE- 0-10, BRONZE- 11 - 50,
SILVER- 51-70 ( merits have to come from each of
the 3 areas on the merit card) and GOLD- 71-110
merits ( merits have to come from each of the 3 areas
on the merit card and have 40 uniform merits), please
remember that a student who has poor ESR entries
won’t have access to use the merits, until they’ve had
8 weeks without any entries. This acts as a further
deterrent to unsafe, off task and disrespectful
behaviour and makes students accountable for their
behaviour school wide.
As of week 7, in the whole school assembly, we will
be selecting 2 students and 2 teachers randomly from
that fortnight of merits and giving them a prize.

Report from the Library
The Library celebrated the Olympic Games with a
colourful exhibition of Olympic memorabilia, posters,
books and a tourist’s guide of things to see in London.
A daily count was kept of the medals won so students
were well informed of the successes of the Australian
Olympians.
Later this month, Book Week will herald a change of
display in the Library. We have purchased most of
the books that have been nominated for the various
awards and these will be made available for
borrowing that week.
The Library has a wonderful variety of fiction and
non-fiction books for junior and senior students. We
encourage students to borrow frequently and to use
YOUR Library.
Volleyball Report - 15/8/12
The Olympic Games Exhibition in the Library
Loss of Priviliges for all Students Attending
Excursions
If a student is on a blue, yellow, red or purple card or
uniform LOP when the closing date (for payment) of
an excursion occurs, (even if they are off the card by
the time the excursion occurs), they will not attend the
excursion.
If a student pays for the excursion and then they
get placed onto a card before the excursion leaves the
school grounds they will NOT BE ALLOWED TO
GO. The bottom line is that each student needs to be
responsible for their behaviour at all times and accept
responsibility for their actions. In addition, the student
needs to let their parent know. Where possible, due to
last minute exclusions of students, staff may try to
notify parents, however, this is not the usual
process. We really appreciate parents’ support and
patience with this as we implement this new system.

Start Smart Workshop
All Year 10 students attended this workshop
presented by the Commonwealth Bank on the 9 th
August. Students were treated to an entertaining and
informative presentation on matters such as their
rights in the workplace, earning an income/taxation,
mobile phones and buying a car. Year 10 students are
to be congratulated for their behaviour and attention
in this presentation and I am sure that all students
would have gained valuable information regarding
financial matters.

Video Game Creation Workshop
The school is offering a wonderful opportunity to all
students to learn and create their own commercial
quality video games at school on Tuesday September
18th, 2012.
Having attended the 2 hour workshop, students will
be able to create their own commercial grade 3D
World with hills, ocean, sky and trees which blow in
the wind. They will also learn how to import vehicles
to make a fun driving game, write simple artificial
intelligence code, character animation code as well as
learn the 12 most important coding concepts needed
to create games for all major platforms, mobile
devices and games consoles.
Every Student Receives:

Development Software (Mac & Windows)
� Access To A Library Of Game Development
Resources Valued At Over $3500 – these
include vehicle packs, 3D models, scripts,
terrain tools, an amazing weather simulator

The session will be run by the team from
GameTraining (www.gametraining.com.au ).
Students should see Mr Low to obtain a note with
additional details and return it by 21 August if they
are interested in attending the workshop.
Probus Club of Bathurst – Year 7 Debate
On August 1 st 4 students from Kelso High combined
with 4 students from Bathurst High to debate the topic
– Television is no good for you!
The debate took place at Bathurst Panthers where
members of the Probus Club of Bathurst combined as
audience and adjudicators.
This event was developed as a Denison College
extension activity for Year 7 students who showed
potential in debating. The previous day students from
both campuses were brought together at Kelso High to
be mentored by Mr Rohan Fahey.
Rohan is an ex-student of Kelso High and is currently
studying to be an English teacher. His time and efforts
were greatly appreciated by the college but most
importantly by the students who had two great days.
After spending a day preparing, two teams were
created with each team comprising two Kelso High
and two Bathurst High students. This worked very
well with students mixing easily.
The experience was a new one for most of the
students and therefore somewhat daunting, however,
they presented very well and were warmly applauded
by the fifty Probus Club members in attendance.

Careers News
Well done to the Kelso High participants.
On August 10, Fran Dwyer the CSU Prospective
Student Adviser spoke to Year 12 students about the
Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) process,
courses at CSU and the PREP ‘Early Entry’ scheme.
Completed PREP forms are due to Mr. Behan by
September 10.
Other ‘Early Entry ‘schemes conducted by
universities include the Star Early Entry Scheme
(Southern Cross University, closes: August 23) and
the UNE Early Entry Scheme (University of New
England, closes: September 28).
Students who have not picked up their copy of the
2013 UAC Guide from Mr Behan are urged to do so

as soon as possible. On-time applications to UAC
close on September 28.
Mr Behan will conduct a seminar for intending
university applicants on Wednesday, August 29
commencing at 9:30 am. Venue: Senior Study.
Volleyball Report
On Friday the 3 rd August, six volleyball teams
travelled to Sydney to compete in the NSW Schools’
Volleyball Cup.
This is the first opportunity that the Year 7 Volleyball
teams have had to compete against other volleyball
schools after training throughout the year.
We left at 6.00 am in the dark with 3 mini buses and
40 enthusiastic volleyballers and returned by 8.30 pm.
It was a fun, long day.
The teams and placing’s were:
Open Boys: Finished 2 nd
U/16 Boys: Finished 2 nd
2 U/15 Boys’ team: Did not place
2 U/15 Girls’ team: Did not place
Whilst the junior teams did not place they all played
very well. I also think they have been able to see how
volleyball can be played at the higher levels.
Congratulations to the 2 older boys’ teams that have
once again proved they are at the top of their games
and the constant dedication throughout the years is
paying off.
Well done to the whole squad for representing our
school throughout the day impeccably.
Special thanks to Mrs Whittaker and Ms Logan for
both driving the mini buses and coaching on the day. I
couldn’t have done it without them.
