Principal’s Report
Another champion….
…..just left my office. Hayden James has just let me
know that he has been selected in the NSW Open
Men’s Volleyball squad. What an extraordinary
achievement by a superb young man. Hayden
continues to be humble about his feats, however
we don’t need to be so.
Congratulations to Hayden and his coach, Mr Jerry
Sheader. It has been a team effort to gain such
representation, and I would encourage any young
athletes at Kelso HC to have a look at the volleyball
program in action. It is exceptional.
Teenagers and arguments….
….seem like peas and carrots. Little surprise that
they gravitate towards debating, and do well. Our
Year 8 Debating team competed last week at
Bathurst HC against Orange, Blayney and Oberon.
Three wins from three debates is a great result,
and a trip to zone finals should result. Well done to
the team and their coach, Miss Sophie Tucker. It is
so pleasing to see debating surge here at Kelso,
with the NAIDOC Aboriginal Debating team also in
the regional finals, under the guidance of Miss
Emma Payne.
Parent Teacher Evening….
….was very well attended last Thursday, with the
electronic booking system and alphabetical seating
of staff well received. Thank you to those hundreds
of parents who braved the cold to attend, and also
to the staff who had a huge day. Mr Richard
McFarlane should be congratulated on his
management of the whole event. Should any
parent need an update on their child’s progress, or
simply is concerned, please contact the school
anytime.
Reminder…
….that Future Directions interviews are looming
for Year 10 students, and that selection sheets
should now be in to Mr Hurford.
Last but not least…
….Alice in Wonderland is the Kelso HC production
for 2013. It commences this week with two
matinees on Thursday 1/8 and Friday 2/8, and
evening performances on Friday and Saturday.
I commend this to you all, as the performances are
excellent. Please come along and support our kids
doing special things. So many staff have been
involved in the hours spent constructing,
rehearsing, sewing, composing, recording, and so
on, that I need to list them next time.
I would like to mention our Site Manager, Mr Rob
Premus, for his expertise and commitment. He has
spent hours assisting with set construction, even
though he has no mandated connection to the
activity. Thank you so much Rob.
College Principal’s Report
Future Directions
The commencement of Term 3 marks what is
arguably the most significant series of events on
the college calendar. Future Directions is the
process which supports Year 10 students at both
campuses to plan for their future careers.
20 September Last day of term
7 October Public Holiday
8 October School resumes

For many students, this will involve selecting their
subjects for Year 11, 2014. For others, this will
mean planning their transition into the workforce.
Whatever your child’s plans for the future, Denison
College staff will be working overtime this term to
make the transition as painless and as successful
as possible.
On Tuesday 16 th July, Year 10 Assemblies were
conducted at both campuses and students were
introduced to the process and given copies of the
Senior Studies Guide 2014-2015, a copy of the
Transition Action Plan, which needed to be
returned to either Mr Hurford (Kelso HC) or Mrs
Dunshea (BHC) by Friday 26 th July, and an
invitation to attend the Future Directions Night at
Charles Sturt University, which occurred last
Wednesday, 24 th July.
I would like to thank all of those parents, students
and staff who attended Future Directions Night. It
was a very successful evening, with CSU’s largest
lecture theatre filled and positive feedback from
parents, teachers and representatives from TAFE,
VERTO, CSU, Skillset and Industry Links, who
manned subject information booths and met with
parents and students throughout the evening.
The next key event will be the student/parent
interviews which will be conducted at Bathurst HC
from 19 th - 23 rd August and at Kelso HC from 26 th -
30 th August. I encourage all parents to look out for
invitations to these interviews, as they are a
critical part of ensuring that the college is able to
best meet the needs of each student.
Any inquiries regarding Future Directions can be
directed to the Head Teacher Senior Studies, Mrs
Murphy (KHC) and Mr Browning (BHC).
Teenagers, Teasing, & Technology Forum
- A great success
Over 50 parents, carers, teachers and guests
attended the June 19 th Forum at the KHC
Gymnasium.
Speakers from Veritas House, Headspace, Kelso
High’s P&C and staff provided information and
advice regarding those dealing with issues relating
to teenagers.
Parents who were present expressed an interest in
having another forum focusing on technology and
problems that can arise from its misuse.
A forum will be planned for early in Term 4 and we
look forward to seeing many parents attend.
Further details will be provided later.
Thank you to the speakers who gave up their time,
the parents who attended and to the P&C,
Stockland Donut King and Muffin Break who
provided coffee and a tasty supper.
Should you wish to get a copy of any of the
information from the night, don’t hesitate to
contact the school on 6331 4544 and I will get in
contact with you.
Crystal Growing Competition
The students in 7SW1 have recently taken part in a
crystal growing competition run by the Australian
National University.
Over a period of time the students have used alum
to grow crystals. The competition looked for
crystals which had formed in definite shapes,
clarity of the crystal and clear of impurities. The
students displayed techniques indicating a high
level of practical skills. Once the crystals formed
we then selected the best crystal which has been
submitted to the competition organisers in
Canberra.
Permission to Publish Proforma
In order to comply with departmental
requirements, all parents must have completed /
signed a Permission to Publish note for each of
their students. This permission note will only need
to be completed once and will cover your child for
their duration at Kelso High Campus. If you haven’t
already completed the proforma and sent it back to
school (box in the student end of the
Administration building), or if you are uncertain,
please fill in and sign the attached permission note.
Girls U15 Soccer
The girls in the Under 15 soccer team played Red Bend
College (Forbes) in the western region final of the Bill
Turner Trophy.
The game was played at a fast pace with both teams
evenly matched. The girls from Red Bend made inroads
into our territory with sound passing but our defence
was excellent stopping every raid. As the game
progressed we started to make attacking raids at the
Red Bend end. Our attack appeared to gain control of
the game. Larissa Kilby and Sarah Morris were
dominant in the middle setting up our attack. Midway
through the first half Emily Whittaker made a break
down the left side, crossed the ball into the goal box for
Courtney Hayter to put the ball into the net.
Our defence held firm with Sarah Risch, Abby Press,
Claire Sheahan, Tristann Donaldson and Emily Risch all
holding firm to stop the Red Bend attack. We had a
number of chances to secure a win but could not get the
extra goal. We held them out until 5 minutes before
fulltime when a shot from Red Bend was deflected from
the post to make it into the goal. Even though we had
further chances we couldn’t find that extra goal to win
the game. The score remained 1 all until fulltime. This
meant we had to play an extra 10 minutes each way,
which again gave no result.
The match was then decided by a penalty shootout
where we lost the game.
The girls deserved to win the game but could not finish
off the opposition.
The best player selected from both teams was our
goalie, Brooke Inwood. Brooke was the team captain
who lead the girls helping the younger players to play
above themselves.
Congratulations to everyone in the team.
