Principal’s Report
14 nil!!
A happy story coming back from Lithgow yesterday,
with coach Phil Warner letting me know his talented
girls’ football team had defeated Lithgow High 14 nil.
He has high hopes for the team in the State Knockout
this year, so stay tuned.
The boys’ football team also defeated Lithgow, albeit
by a much smaller margin. Congratulations to both
teams, and best of luck in the next round.
The girls’ touch team also defeated Bathurst High
Campus earlier this week quite comfortably, however
the boys side lost a cliffhanger 8-6.
A National Champion
Holly Simons from Year 9 has returned from
Melbourne where she was a member of the NSW
Under 17 team pursuit that won the national title,
breaking the record in the process.
What an achievement by a great student with a
positive attitude to all she does. Holly travels to
Shepparton soon to compete in the road titles, and we
wish her well.
there will be no Year 10 Dinner in Term 4 and
students will be required to continue at school until
the end of the school year
New Toys
Actually that is something the new laptops are not!
Thursday night saw the rollout of these new devices
to all of Year 9, with everyone impressed by the
capabilities, design, and speed of the new Lenovo
machines. As the school is completely networked,
Year 9 will be able to work with their laptops at any
time in any room.
Any issues with the laptops should be directed to
College Principal’s Report
Welcome to RoSA
In late 2011 the Minister for Education, Adrian
Piccoli, announced that 2011 would be the last year of
the School Certificate. Many Year 9 students rejoiced.
What is RoSA?
The Record of School Achievement (RoSA) is the
credential that will be issued by the Board of Studies
to students if they leave school before they complete
the HSC. It will show the results for all courses
students complete in Year 10 and Year 11, as well as
providing the ability to record a student’s extracurricular
achievements. Like the School Certificate,
it will enable students to be reliably compared across
all NSW schools.
The minimum requirement for the RoSA is the
satisfactory completion of Year 10. This means that
students must still have a satisfactory attendance
record and complete all assessments and other course
requirements for all of their subjects. If a student
does not satisfactorily complete Year 10, they cannot
leave school and will not be eligible for a RoSA.
They may not be able to progress to Year 11.
Is there an external exam?
Denison College students will still be required to sit
formal examinations during Term 4 of Year 10 as part
of their course completion requirements. However,
these will be different to the state-wide School
Certificate Tests of the past.
Students who leave school prior to receiving their
HSC will have the option of completing online
literacy and numeracy tests developed by the Board of
Studies. These will be available twice a year so that
they can be done at a time close to when a student
leaves, rather than during a formal exam period.
What else will change?
From a student’s perspective, the daily routine of
going to school and completing a range of homework
and a variety of assessments in their subjects will not
change. The main difference will be that there will be
additional time during Term 4 for schools to deliver
educational programs. Programs for Year 10 will run
right up until the end of Term 4.
Where can I find out more information?
Contact your child’s campus, or visit the Board of
Studies website
Clean Up Australia Day Results
This year was our third year of running Clean Up
Australia Day at Kelso High Campus.
We increased our tally rate from 5000 to 8000 last
year and this year was our best ever result with 9000
pieces of rubbish.
Well done to all students involved in the collection.
Most students have already received their Merit
Award and certificate. Those who have not yet
received them can see Mr Warner or Mrs Smith.
We have three movie passes and three USB sticks for
six different people who handed in their green slips.
The winners were :
1 Lachlan Hicks 4 Courtney Dresser
2 Courtney Barnett 5 Karlie McPhillamy
3 Josh McInerney 6 Luke Ciccocioppo
Girls’ Day
On Wednesday 4 th April all Year 7 girls will take part
in a ‘Girls’ Day’. Issues to be covered on the day are
body images and changes, friendships, sport activities
and a movie. Any enquires please contact the school.
Visual Arts Excursion
Last Tuesday students from Year 10, 11 and 12 Visual
Arts visited Sydney for their annual gallery visits.
We started the day by listening to talks by previous
HSC students who had had their Body of Works
selected for the Art Express exhibition. We heard
about how organised they had to be, how they had to
work towards completion dates, and how their works
evolved over the year. These talks were really
important for students currently studying Year 12
Visual Arts and for those students intending to do so.
After this we viewed the Art Express exhibition at the
AGNSW as well as other works which they had on
display.
After lunch we walked to the Object Gallery in Surrey
Hills which specialises in designed works and
participated in discussions about art versus design.
We ended the day with a visit to the Australian
Photography Gallery, which proved to be quite
inspirational for a couple of students who are working
with photography for their Body of Work this year.
Rowing Report
Written by Ben Sennett (Year 7) and Cole Mutton
(Year 7)
Every Wednesday during 3 rd and 4 th period, eighteen
Year 7 students have been going out to Ben Chifley
Dam to experience rowing.
After recess we head down to the bus bay and catch a
ride out to the dam. It is a very long ride in a very
small bus.
The boats are very heavy so it can take some time to
get them into the water. We go get changed in the
change rooms, then carry the boats down to the water.
There are many sticks near the water that we need to
dodge so we don’t step on them.
When you get out on the water rowing can become
harder than when you practice it on land. Even though
rowing can be complicated it is fun when you get out
on the water.
There are some negatives, the positives easily rule
them out.
WARNING !! While out on the water DO NOT
dangle your feet in the water – LEECHES !!
Senior Girls Soccer
Kelso High girls’ senior soccer team travelled to
Lithgow to play in the second round of the CHS
knockout. On arrival at the ground we found out a
heavy rainfall during the morning had closed the field.
After a few anxious moments the game was then
transferred to Lithgow High School. Long grass, very
soft ground and lots of water confronted our girls; a
very heavy and difficult ground to play on. The
decision: we were playing.
The game started with our girls taking the ball and
going on the attack. Within the first two minutes Dana
Grenfell took a shot which deflected off the goal post
and into the goals. This was the start of a very one
sided game. The girls worked well under the
conditions. Passing was difficult as the ball did not
roll but they managed consistent team raids into the
Lithgow half. The opposition goalie was kept busy
with many shots on goal.
It is difficult to identify the best players as the whole
team contributed to the win. Kelsey and Morgan
Sherman both worked well together in the mid-field
controlling the game. Aimee Morris and Carol Prosser
were strong in defence, with Aimee turning many
defensive situations into attacking raids by the team.
Caitlin Morris, Natalie Hugo and Kelly Baker created
many scoring opportunities with their attack. Jasmine
Rae and Jessica Daymond were consistently
dangerous setting up and creating many scoring
opportunities. Great support was supplied by Brooke
Inwood, Jordyn Hayter, Cassandra Talbot and Ebony
Fenton also contributed with fine efforts.
The final score was 14 goals to nil. The scorers were:
Natalie Hugo 4 goals, Jasmine Rae, 4 goals, Morgan
Sherman 3 goals, Dana Grenfell 1 goal, Kelsey
Sherman 1 goal and Jessica Daymond 1 goal.
We now look forward to the next round.
Senior Boys’ Soccer
In round 2 (after having a bye in round one) of this
statewide competition, Kelso High travelled to
Lithgow to play Lithgow High School. The conditions
proved to be very challenging, with the playing field
being very wet and the grass quite long. However, the
game itself was a close and torrid encounter, with
both teams displaying some excellent skills under
trying conditions.
Jarrah Hale scored first for Kelso after some very
good lead-up work. Jacob Soetens scored an excellent
goal from a penalty, and the score remained at 2-0
until the end of the game. Both teams had many
opportunities to score but each were countered by
strong defence.
Outstanding players for Kelso included, Jacob
Soetens, Geoff Murphy, James Cox and Hayden
James.
Other members of the squad included, Andrew
Christie, Jeremy Judge, Lachlan Thomas, David Cox,
Callum Christie, Michael Betts, Harley Henderson,
Joe Bugg, Zac Morrison, Jahziel Iapson, Jarrah Hale.
Special congratulations go to 4 students from this
team who have been selected to represent Western
Region in soccer, Jacob Soetens and Andrew Christie
(this the second year for both these boys), James Cox,
and Jeremy Judge (this is an excellent effort by
Jeremy as he is only in Year 9).
