When do I start studying for
this qualification?
September 2015.
For how long will I study?
For two years.
One year to complete the Advanced
Subsidiary (equivalent to one A Level).
Two years to complete the Diploma
(equivalent to two A Levels).
What is this course about?
This course gives learners the
opportunity to explore the exciting and
innovative world of Sport and Exercise
Science. The London 2012 Olympics
highlighted the value of Sports and
Exercise Science in underpinning
outstanding performance.
Students are supported by our
talented, experienced and committed
teaching team. Students can and
are encouraged to study this course
alongside other areas of Academy of
Sport provision.
What topics will I study?
Students must achieve a total of 60
credits to achieve the Level 3 Sport and
Exercise Science Subsidiary Diploma.
A total of 30 credits are achieved
by completing the three mandatory
units which are; anatomy for sport
and exercise, sport and exercise
physiology, and sport and exercise
psychology.
The remaining 30 credits are achieved
by completing a further three optional
units.
How will my work be
assessed?
Each unit is assessed as coursework;
there are no exams. You receive
feedback about your progress
throughout the course. Evidence for
assessment may be generated through
a range of activities, including written
assignment, role-play, oral assessment,
presentations and assessment of
practical performance.
Are there any specific entry
requirements?
You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs
at A*- C grade. These should include
a minimum of two grade Cs in Science
(double award or separate sciences),
English, Maths and PE.
What skills and interests do
I need beforehand to be a
successful applicant for this
course?
Students need to have a good
understanding of how sport affects
the body and mind, and the effects
on performance of health, fitness and
nutrition. An interest in current sporting
affairs is very important.
Applicants must also be able to
demonstrate a real passion and interest
for sport.
What skills will I need to
develop during the course to
succeed?
• Good independent study skills and
the ability to meet deadlines are
essential skills for success.
• Accurate self-assessment of your
own work and progress is essential
to ensure that your grade is
maximised.
• As well as working independently
you need to be able to work in a
team.
• Students need to be keen on a
variety of sports and understand
sports performance.

• A good range of practical skills
that can be applied in a range of
situations.
• Time management and the ability
to balance college, sport, social
and paid working commitments are
crucial.
• You will need to develop strong
analytical skills.
What do students say about
this course?
In a recent survey 95% rated the
effectiveness of teaching on this
course as excellent or good, and 100%
excellent or good on the full diploma in
year two.
What are the lessons like?
A range of teaching and learning styles
is used during the course. Formal
lessons are combined with discussion,
case studies, task-based learning,
practical activities, student-led activities
and ILT.
There will be an emphasis on practical
activities to support learning throughout
the duration of the course. Visits
to local university sports science
departments are a regular feature of
the course. Teaching resources and
course material are available on the
student intranet; this material is very
important as the course has no exams.
The workload is demanding and
coursework requirements are intense at
times.
1:1 support is available to all students.
Is there a similar qualification
to this one? If so how do I
choose between them?
The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is
similar in outcome to the AS/A Level
in Physical Education (which is a twoyear
course). The BTEC best suits
those students who prefer coursework
to exams. The BTEC course does not
assess practical performance in the
same way as the A Level in Physical
Education; as such the Subsidiary
Diploma suits those students who do
not play, coach or officiate at a high
level in two sports.
Are there any other
qualifications which combine
particularly well with this one?
Popular combinations include A Levels
in Biology and Psychology, as these
qualifications support the specific areas
of study of the Subsidiary Diploma,
but the course ensures flexibility for
students who want to combine their
study of sport with any other AS/A Level
qualifications offered by the College.
What do people do with BTEC
Level 3 Diploma in Sport and
Exercise Sciences?
The course provides an excellent
foundation for candidates who may
wish to pursue foundation degrees/
degrees in sports science and or
a career in: sports psychology,
physiology, nutrition, coaching,
management, biomechanics, research
and professional sport.
The Diploma contains a Level 4 unit
and presents a very considerable
challenge which is an excellent
gateway into related courses in higher
education. You should consider this
option if you have ambitions of a career
in the exciting and innovative world of
sport and exercise science.
