When do I start studying forthis qualification?September 2015.For how long will I study?For two years.One year to complete the <strong>BTEC</strong> <strong>Level</strong>3 Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent toone A <strong>Level</strong>). Two years to completethe <strong>BTEC</strong> <strong>Level</strong> 3 Diploma (equivalentto 2 A <strong>Level</strong>s).What is this course about?This practical, work-related courseallows you to study aspects of Biology,Chemistry and Physics to advancedlevel. You will complete practicaland theoretical assessments thatare based on some topics that arelinked to medical science. You look atdevelopment of scientific knowledge,science in the media and ethical issues.There is also the opportunity for a workexperience element.What topics will I study?• Fundamentals of science.• Working in the science industry.• Scientific investigations.• Scientific practical techniques.• Perceptions of science.• Using mathematical tools inscience.There are six more units in the secondyear, covering more aspects of biology,chemistry and physics that are appliedin medical care.How will my work beassessed?All units are assessed as coursework.There are no exams.What skills and interests doI need beforehand to be asuccessful applicant for thiscourse?You need a good knowledge of GCSEscience and sound numeracy andliteracy skills combined with a realinterest in science.What skills will I need todevelop during the course tosucceed?Good time management, good practicalskills, independent research skills, goodICT skills, good team working skills.Are there any specific entryrequirements?A minimum of four GCSEs at A*- Cgrade (including two grade Csin GCSE <strong>Science</strong> or a <strong>BTEC</strong> FirstDiploma in <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Science</strong> at Meritgrade) and a minimum grade D atMaths GCSE.What are the lessons like?You will carry out many experiments,some of which you will need to designyourself. Some are linked to yourwork experience. Otherwise, you willhave lessons where you undertakeindependent and group research,discuss scientific issues with the restof the group and your teacher, usecomputers, get information from theinternet.1:1 support is available to all students.You complete between four and sixtasks in each of the units, then eachunit is given a grade. These grades arethen added together to give you yourfinal result: pass, merit, distinction ordistinction*.
