This group meets for lively evening practices and competes in fun-filled weekend tournaments. sPoRTs MeDICIne ClUb Founded 2011 Ms. Kristin Romani WINNETKA The Sports Medicine Club was designed to create an environment where students can observe and experience the field of Sports Medicine in the exciting atmosphere of New Trier Athletics. Students will gain knowledge of anatomy and physiology, relate injuries to the demands of sport, assist with immediate care of injuries once proper skills are obtained, observe and understand rehabilitation techniques while assisting athletes with basic rehabilitation exercises, assist with the application of modalities and understand the effectiveness of each, and assist with general athletic training procedures during games and practices. This club prepares student aides for future education and professional responsibility in a fun environment. sTRIKeRs Founded 2005 Ms. Bridget Butterly WINNETKA Don’t strike out! Join this club for pin-pelting practice and just plain fun during weekly excursions to Pinstripes Bowling Alley. For only $7, you can bowl two games and rent shoes. Meet us by the school vans on Tuesdays at 3:45pm! o r g A n i z At i o n S A n d c l u b S sTUDenT allIanCe (sa) Founded 1924 Mr. Steve Drajpuch WINNETKA Student Alliance (SA), the student government body of New Trier’s Winnetka Campus, serves as a liaison between the students and administration. Committee work is a hallmark of the program, through which board members work to address the concerns of their constituents. Each committee works with the Principal and other administrators to ensure that all students are able to express their opinions, ideas and concerns. Some of SA’s activities include chartering new clubs, appropriating funds to clubs through Budget Day, hosting Springfest, and working with administrators on school policy changes. Student Alliance representatives are elected from the sophomore, junior and senior classes. Student Alliance wants your thoughts and concerns to be expressed to the administration so that everyone can be fairly represented in the decisions that affect you. sTUDenT aMbassaDoRs Founded 2012 Mr. Ian Duell WINNETKA Formerly known as Sassafras, Student Ambassadors is all about easing the lives of current and incoming students. We are involved in an anti-bullying program for elementary and middle schools in the local community. Student members also assist in programs such as Names, the Gap Year Fair and Parent Teacher Conferences. We are also involved in nominating and selecting candidates for the Jan Borja Memorial Scholarship. We are always looking for new ideas so come join us and share yours! sTUDenT MeDIaTIon Founded 1992 Mr. David Braun WINNETKA Student Mediation is a process in which students, trained in conflict resolution, help other students to resolve their disputes. Conflict resolution provides an opportunity for students to solve a problem by working in a neutral, confidential, open atmosphere, where each student has a chance to tell his or her story. sTUDenTs TaKInG aCTIon now DaRfUR (sTanD) Founded 2006 Ms. Michael Christensen Ms. Sarah Jerutis WINNETKA STAND is the student led division of United to End Genocide.” STAND envisions a world in which the global community is willing and able to protect civilians from genocide and mass atrocities. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. As a club, we learn about the ways to recognize an impending genocide, learn about current instances of mass atrocity and work to move students to action. Activities include weekly meetings, club sponsored awareness days, opportunities to speak at other schools, and work with groups from other schools. sTUDenT TUToRInG Founded 1988 Ms. Mary Mitchell Ms. Sandra Schwartz WINNETKA Would you like to help someone who is really having trouble with a subject that you enjoy? Student Tutoring is a great way to show your leadership ability and to expand your academic performance and personal growth. Apply to be a tutor in the fall or spring during the application process, receive specific training, and volunteer your time and skills by working with your peers. Please consider Student Tutoring as one of your service activities. sUMMeR CaMP oPPoRTUnITIes PRoVIDe an eDGe (sCoPe) Founded 2008 Ms. Ida Payne WINNETKA SCOPE is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged children experience summer camp. New Trier’s SCOPE program supports the Midwest Chapter of this philanthropic group. Members educate the school community as well as the public about the good deeds of SCOPE and actively fundraise in order to donate funds. sUnRIse senIoRs TBA WINNETKA Sunrise Seniors is a Social Service club that meets on Tuesdays. The group leaves from Winnetka at 3:45 and returns to school at 5:15 pm. Students go to Sunrise Nursing Home in Wilmette. While at the nursing home, students talk to the residents and do activities with them such as playing card games. Joining this group is a very nice way to connect with senior citizens and to brighten their day with a visit.
sUPPoRT oUR TRooPs Founded 2012 Ms. Susan Holderread WINNETKA What can an hour a week do for active duty military personnel and veterans? A lot. The non-partisan Support Our Troops Club meets Wednesdays after school to raise both money and awareness for a number of worthy causes that support the men and women who have served, or who are currently serving, our country. Club activities also include guest speakers, field trips, creating care packages and writing letters to active duty personnel and veterans. TREVIA (YeaRbooK) Founded 1904 Mr. Kevin Bond WINNETKA/NORTHFIELD Are you interested in journalism, publishing, design, or photography? Are you interested in creating a permanent piece of New Trier history? Trevia, the New Trier yearbook, offers students the opportunity to do all of these things and more as they work closely with other talented and motivated students to create this entirely student-run publication. Applications are accepted in the spring and students are selected through an interview process to join this staff of 15-20 students who oversee production of the annual book. The group meets daily, ninth period, along with significant time outside of the classroom and weekends and evenings capturing the never-ending life of the New Trier community. No prior experience is required, just an interest in working closely as a team and sharing in the pride in May when New Trier receives its shipment of one the largest high school yearbooks in the country. n e W t r i e r S t u d e n t A c t i v i t i e S P r o g r A m 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 PA g e 1 7 o r g A n i z At i o n S A n d c l u b S TReVIaCaPella (TaC) Founded 2009 Mr. Nathan Landes WINNETKA Treviacapella (TAC) is a group in which all members share a passion and appreciation for music, especially acapella. Students meet before school one or two times a week, for breakfast and fun while tackling challenging music. It is helpful if members of TAC have a strong ear, a willingness to try, and confidence in their parts. Dedication to the group is vital to its success. Acapella singing requires a sense of unity and blend, so members must be willing to connect with one another on a personal and professional level. TAC’s repertoire consists of mostly popular music including rock, alternative, hip-hop, and of course, the classics. The group is divided into sopranos, altos, tenors and basses by vocal ability and range. Practice, practice, practice as well as commitment bring success! TReVIan RePUblICans Founded 1993 Ms. Paige Carney WINNETKA Trevian Republicans’ purpose is to expose New Trier students to American politics and to offer opportunities for political involvement. Join this group to keep up with what is going on in Washington and have a voice. You do make a difference. TRI-sHIP Founded 1924 Mr. Scott Fricke WINNETKA Mr. Robert Rowe Mr. Myles Whitebloom NORTHFIELD Tri-Ship is the oldest club for boys at New Trier. It is a school and community service organization. At Winnetka it is run by five elected officers and 35 appointed board members, whose efforts are coordinated with faculty sponsors. At Northfield, Tri-Ship consists of representatives from each male adviser room. Both campuses work to organize a wide variety of activities, such as the annual Christmas tree sale, the canned food drive at Thanksgiving and the Homecoming dance. These events, as well as several smaller service projects, have contributed to both school and community well-being while successfully raising thousands of dollars annually for student scholarships. UKUlele Founded 2008 Mr. Alf Estberg NORTHFIELD Aloha! Enjoy learning music? Interested in picking up a fun and easy instrument? Ukulele Club meets once a week and provides students with an opportunity to play music, socialize, and learn about Pacific Island culture. Students learn traditional Hawaiian strums and vamps, as well as modern songs. While some members have musical training, students do not need any musical knowledge or experience. Members learn how to hold the instrument, chord, and strum on the first day. Mahalo!
