Join to learn about the historical and contemporary aspects of the African American experience. afRICan aMeRICan CUlTURe (aaCC) Founded 2004 Ms. Pat Savage-Williams NORTHFIELD This club provides students who share or support the African American culture with opportunities to socialize, communicate and participate in cultural and outreach service programs. Through participation, students heighten the awareness of African American issues on campus and become a more assertive force in educating New Trier about the culture and accomplishments of African Americans. aGes Mr. Jack Leydon WINNETKA The social service group of all Ages has arrived! Come to Ages Thursdays after school. The group meets outside near the tennis courts and goes to Lieberman Geriatric Center, only ten minutes away. Join Ages and be greeted with smiles from the residents there. The group returns to New Trier no later than 5:30 PM, leaving plenty of time for Facebook and friends. aIDs CoalITIon Founded 1995 Ms. Ellen Zemel WINNETKA Action-oriented, AIDS CO sponsors AIDS Awareness Days, AIDS Walk Chicago and the Book Buy-Back Drive. Members function as Board members of the AIDS Coalition Grant Foundation, which has given out over $60,000 in Grants supporting organizations engaged in research, outreach, prevention, and education in the field of HIV/AIDS. AIDS CO promotes the education of the New Trier Community about the global and local HIV/AIDS crises and encourages integration of that knowledge into healthy personal actions. We teach “why you should care.” o r g A n i z At i o n S A n d c l u b S albanY PaRK Founded 2004 Ms. Chris Estberg Mr. Don Wurth NORTHFIELD Do you like helping others and enjoy spending time with little kids? If so, then Albany Park is for you! This service oriented group takes weekly trips to the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago to tutor elementary aged students. Each week the sponsors create exciting and fun projects that you help the children complete. One of the highlights of the year is when the Albany Park students come to New Trier for a day of fun and learning. alTeRnaTIVes Ms. Pat Galanopoulos WINNETKA Alternatives is a social service group that goes to the north side of Chicago after school once a week from 3:30 -6:30 PM. The group tutors kids and plays games with them. They also stop for food on the way back to NT. If you are looking for an incredible experience, join alternatives. aMeRICan CIVIl lIbeRTIes UnIon (aClU) Founded 1991 Mr. Alex Zilka WINNETKA Are you aware of your civil rights, those guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? New Trier’s American Civil Liberties Union club is the only high school chapter of the ACLU in Illinois. The club is dedicated to educating students about their rights and to actively supporting civil rights for all Americans. During the school year, ACLU Club will visit the ACLU of Illinois, plan a political debate, and sit in on court cases at a courthouse in Chicago. A threat to one group’s rights threatens the civil rights of all. All are welcome! aMnesTY InTeRnaTIonal Founded 1982 Mr. David Braun WINNETKA Amnesty at New Trier joins a worldwide network of almost two million members advocating for victims of human rights abuses and torture. The group meets weekly to write letters to legislators and world leaders in support of the rights of prisoners of conscience. Members raise funds to support these causes, and the club brings speakers to New Trier to raise awareness of human rights concerns. Amnesty International has earned the Nobel Peace Prize for its work. Join this club and make a difference. anIMal PRoTeCTIon Founded 1989 Ms. Kristina Bachmann WINNETKA The New Trier Animal Protection Club promotes awareness of animal rights issues through school and community events. Fundraisers to support animal welfare organizations, a canned pet food drive, and volunteer opportunities are some of the activities that encourage concerned students to make a difference at New Trier and in the larger community. anIMÉ Founded circa 1995 Mr. Pedro Gutierrez WINNETKA Animé Club is a social group that meets each week to view animation media and films. Animé members have varied interests, including filmography, computer animation, and learning about Japanese animation. Animé is pictorial in nature, color and action. This club is open to all students throughout the year. We look forward to meeting you!
aRCHeRY Founded 2008 Mr. Andrew Juedes Mr. Steve Linke WINNETKA The New Trier Archery Club brings together those interested in learning about the sport and those who want to train to pursue excellence. The Archery club meets every week throughout the year to learn training techniques and prepare for participation at an archery range. The group is open to all students who would enjoy the opportunity to know Archery as a fun and serious endeavor. aRCHITeCTURe Founded 2011 Mr. Josh Wood WINNETKA Architecture Club is a unique field-based club. As a group, we travel to architecturally interesting locations such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio, the Robie House in Hyde Park, the Aqua Building and Millennium Park. For construction experience, club members participate in a variety of design/build projects in the community. Architecture Club is a fun, social and academic club; no architecture or CAD-related classes are necessary to be a member. Students can join anytime during the year. Great flexibility allows students to drop “in” and “out” depending on schedules and finished projects. All media is explored. aRT HIsToRY Founded 2005 Ms. Gardiner O’Kain WINNETKA Art History Club explores the different movements, styles, artists, history and influences of art through the ages. Films, discussions and art projects help club members understand the connection of the arts and artists to specific time periods. asIan YoUTH seRVICes (aYs) TUToRInG Ms. Egle Baliukaite Ms. Jennifer Lim WINNETKA AYS is a fun filled social service group that goes to Chicago after school once each week to tutor happy and energetic kids. If you want to have a fun time and make a difference, join this awesome group! asTRonoMY Founded 1981 Mr. Terry Witt WINNETKA What is really out there? Find the answers through weekly meetings, evening viewing sessions and field trips. New Trier astronomers explore other worlds, black holes, quasars, extraterrestrial life, space travel, the latest results from NASA, the Hubble Space telescope (through the Internet), and more! Join Astronomy Club - all are welcome. aUToMoTIVe DesIGn Founded 2001 Mr. Chip Finck WINNETKA Do you like to build things? Have you ever wanted to build a go-cart or mini-bike? Would you like to learn how? Come to Automotive Design Club, where students design with their minds and build with their hands. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. boaRD GaMe Founded 2001 Mr. John Miller WINNETKA From strategic card games such as Magic the Gathering, Munchkin, and Dominion to board games such as Risk, Carcassonne, and Ticket To Ride, Board Game Club allows you to get involved with any strategy game at any level. Join for the challenge and competition, stay for the fun. boYs & GIRls TBA WINNETKA One day each week, this social service group goes to Boys and Girls Club, an after school youth center for kids ages five and up. NT students spend time with kids doing arts and crafts and helping with homework. Join and make a difference! bReaKDanCInG Founded 2008 Ms. Elizabeth Plank WINNETKA So you think you’ve got what it takes to be in NT’s “Crew”? Or, do you just want to perfect your pop n lock, windmill, or flare? Join Breakdancing Club - any and all levels of experience are welcome. This club holds practice sessions twice a week during the first semester. Members learn new moves, watch dance videos, and choreograph dances for Dance Day and other school events. Members also have the opportunity to take master classes from instructors at a downtown breakdancing studio.
