CASES NOT COVERED BY SPECIFIC RULES It is understood that the rules contained in this handbook are not all inclusive. The administration and teachers may take such action as is necessary and not forbidden by law to insure the discipline and operation of the school. Action may be taken with respect to any offense which interferes with the orderly conduct of the school or which affects the safety and welfare of students either individually or collectively regardless of the existence or non-existence of a rule covering the offense. Acts that are crimes outside of school are also considered crimes in school, and they will be treated similarly. CELL PHONES It is a privilege that cell phones are allowed in school; however, they must be turned off at all times during the school day. Students are strongly encouraged to keep their phones in their lockers. Cell phones with camera capability are strictly forbidden in the physical education/athletics locker rooms and bathrooms. If a student is found using their cell phone during school hours (7:37am-2:42pm), the following consequences will take place. NOTE: If a student refuses to hand over his/her phone to a staff member, despite the number of offenses the student has, the consequences will automatically jump to consequences for the third or more offenses. • On the first offense, the device will be confiscated. The student may pick up the device at the end of his or her school day and a warning is given to remind the student of the policy. (Return of the phone at the end of the day is not guaranteed, as this is dependent upon staff availability) • On the second offense, the device will be confiscated and the student will be assigned a detention, and a parent/guardian will be notified that s/he must come to school to pick up the device. The device will not be turned over to the student. • On the third or more offense, the device will be confiscated, the student will be assigned an in-school suspension, and a parent/guardian will be notified that he/she must attend a meeting with the administration. At this meeting, further action will be discussed, and the device will be given to the parent/guardian. CHANGE OF ADDRESS/PHONE NUMBER/EMERGENCY CONTACT Inform your guidance counselor if you have a change of address, telephone number, and/or family emergency contacts. It is very important to contact the school any time there are changes in your emergency contact information. CLASSROOM CONDUCT Students are expected to follow each teacher’s classroom expectations. See the Discipline Chart for guidelines that will be followed for failure to abide by classroom expectations. CLOSING PROCEDURES The decision to close school due to weather or other emergency situations is made by the Superintendent of the School District of South Milwaukee. The official announcement for any school closing will be posted on the District website and may be heard over the following Radio and TV Stations: 20

Students who wear inappropriate clothing may be sent home to change clothes. For more detailed information about inappropriate clothing, see the Discipline Chart. a. Sleepwear and slippers are not permitted. b. If make-up or hair coloring is worn, it may not cause distractions in any way. c. No bare midriffs or low-cut tops. The students must be able to raise her/his arms above her/his head without exposing bare areas. Any revealing clothing is prohibited. d. No short shorts or skirts. The student must be able to place their arms at their side and touch the bottom of their shorts/skirts with their longest finger. e. Tops or skirts with leggings or tights follow the same rule as shorts or skirts, f. No sleeveless shirts, tank tops or any other top deemed inappropriate by administration g. No low-waisted jeans, shorts or skirts. The student needs to be able to sit down and not expose her/his bare back or underwear. Pants should be at the waist at all times and excessively baggy pants are not allowed. Belts are required if pants impede mobility or are being frequently adjusted to keep from falling down. h... No suggestive, abusive inappropriate language or designs, or language that includes put-downs (i.e. I’m with stupid, etc.). The wearing of clothing or jewelry that projects violence, drugs or sexual innuendo is strictly forbidden. i. Any items representing gang affiliation are not permitted. j. No references to alcohol, tobacco or weapons are allowed. k. All sweaters, shirts, pullovers, etc., must be worn appropriately at all times. l. No hats, hoods, or other headwear can be worn in the building during the school day. Headwear worn due to religious/cultural beliefs must be approved with justification documentation from the parents. Permission will be granted on an individual basis. Continuous headwear violations may result in the student losing his/her privilege to wear such headwear. COPIED, PLAGIARIZED WORK OR CHEATING A student who submits work that is not his or her own, allows another student to copy his or her work, or caught cheating will be subject to disciplinary and academic consequences. A student may be required to resubmit work for partial credit or may receive no credit. Incidents of copying, plagiarism or cheating will be examined on a case-by-case basis, and appropriate consequences will be assessed. CORPORAL PUNISHMENT/USE OF PHYSICAL FORCE School District employees and officials may not use corporal punishment in any of its forms. School officials and employees are not prohibited, however, from using reasonable and necessary force: 21
