Fotech Solutions Limited develops monitoring and surveillance solutions for oil and
gas wells and pipelines. They have created a class leading fibre optic acoustic sensor
product, Helios, which detects sounds along the length of a fibre optic cable at
distances of up to 50km.
The high quality data received by Helios shows leaks, fluid movement in and out
of the reservoir, and monitors the safe completion of reservoir activities such as
perforating and fracturing. In the security market, the system’s ability to rapidly
identify the locations of sounds without the need for expensive electronic
components in the field gives it significant advantages over incumbent solutions in
performance, safety, cost and maintenance.
The global market for oilfield sensor systems is well established and growing. As it
continues to develop, there is a growing move to enhance the quantity and quality
of data gathered; all part of a broader trend towards ‘the digital oilfield’. There is also
growing oilfield industry interest in improved asset monitoring and management,
particularly as a result of increasingly ageing assets. The Deepwater Horizon accident
in the gulf of Mexico is also likely to result in the industry and its regulators adopting
additional safety and monitoring requirements.
Fotech has completed over a dozen trials and deployments for a range of customers
