Founded in 2006, glysure is developing a continuous blood glucose sensor for
patients in intensive care with the goal of reducing patient mortality.
In 2001, work on “tight glycemic control” (“TgC”) established a new standard in
post-surgical care by showing that managing blood glucose levels within tight
normal ranges yielded clear improvements in patient outcomes (including a
46% reduction in incidence of sepsis, a 41 % reduction in renal failure and a 34%
reduction in in-patient mortality).
Maintaining glucose levels within the target range is difficult using current
technologies which require frequent measurements to guard against hypoglycemia
and the risk of adverse outcomes, including death. given the practical limitations
of resource constraints, nursing workloads and current technologies, hospitals have
struggled with the development and implementation of safe and effective TgC
protocols.
glySure is developing a continuous in vivo glucose monitoring system using an
intravascular, optical florescence based sensor to meet the worldwide demand
for implementation of TgC/IIT. The company has demonstrated highly accurate
sensors and prototype systems in vitro and in vivo and is now preparing for clinical
approval trials.
