Marine Current Turbines Ltd
Nominated by CT Investment Partners LLP
Marine Current Turbines Ltd is the first mover in the field of tidal and marine current
turbines. This entirely new technology provides a means to generate electricity
from the huge and sustainable energy resource of flowing currents in the seas and
oceans. The basic principle may seem fairly obvious, namely to install something
rather like a windmill under water, but the practical difficulties of doing this at
sea are formidable. To this end Marine Current Turbines has an unparalleled track
record of developing and scaling up this novel technology, the key “milestones” and
achievements being as follows:- 1. installation of world’s first tidal turbine, a 15kW
“Proof of Concept” system on Loch Linnhe, Scotland in 2004-5 (a project inherited
from the former parent company) 2. installation of world’s first offshore and first
large scale tidal turbine, the 300kW Seaflow system installed 3km nE of Lynmouth,
Devon, England in May 2003 3. installation of world’s first commercial scale tidal
turbine, the 1200kW Seagen system, in Strangford narrows, northern Ireland
in April 2008, which by now has delivered over 2000MWh into the UK national
grid. The company is now working on the world’s first commercial scale project,
a planned array of Seagen type turbines. This progress has been achieved with a
certain amount of government support, initially from the EC but mainly from the
UK government (DECC), however most of the risk and some 75% of the costs have
been borne by VC funds, corporate partners and some private shareholders..
