nexeon is developing novel silicon anode technology for lithium-ion batteries.
nexeon’s technology is built upon pioneering materials science research at Imperial
College London and the company has made substantial progress over the past
three years.
The energy capacity of current lithium-ion batteries is limited by the use of carbon
anodes. As a result of the increasing demands on energy storage in consumer
electronic and electric vehicle applications, alternative anode materials have been
sought. nexeon’s silicon anode materials have a much higher capacity for lithium
than carbon and as a result have a theoretical limit of almost ten times the energy
capacity per gram.
nexeon boasts a fully operational pilot plant capable of producing its unique
materials at kilogram scale, anode coating facilities, and the ability to fabricate
prototype pouch and cylindrical cells incorporating its materials.
nexeon has an extremely strong IP base which has continued to grow since its
formation. nexeon now has a portfolio consisting of 14 patent families, with more
in preparation.
The potential market for lithium-ion batteries is estimated at $35 billion by 2018.
