Quantasol is developing Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) solar cells. CPV solar
power systems can deliver more power per acre and use land more efficiently and
effectively than any other solar technology. QuantaSol’s CPV solar cells enable
system manufacturers to generate more power than ever before from power
installations, delivering cheaper electricity.
QuantaSol is combining the highly reliable technology of multi-junction solar cells,
with the similarly well proven Quantum Well technology from the Telecom industry.
This powerful combination creates third-generation solar energy performance in a
cost effective and highly reliable device.
Quantasol’s technology is based on triple junction solar cells, which split the solar
spectrum into three, allowing each sub-cell to convert the band of the spectrum
to which it is sensitive at the greatest efficiency. Quantasol’s technology builds on
this through the inclusion of quantum wells, which are used to ‘tune’ the sub-cells
to absorb and convert more of the available light, leading to increases in efficiency.
QuantaSol world leading devices are now moving towards volume availability with
average efficiencies exceeding 40%
Quantasol was founded by Imperial Innovations in 2007 to commercialise
technology developed by Professor Keith Barnham at Imperial College London in
conjunction with Dr John Roberts at Sheffield University..
