Boutique
photoshoot
celebrates
real women
PANDORA’s Box lingerie boutique in
Ormskirk has held its ‘real women’
photoshoot.
The boutique held castings at the Ormskirk
store in August, choosing three women of
different ages and shapes for their
advertising campaign at the West Tower in
Aughton.
Owner Katie Givens said that she wanted
women to represent the brand who were
‘normal’ rather than super–slim, as she
believes that ‘perfect’ women in
advertising put women off.
Julia Lyons, 42, has overcome
body–confidence issues after being
self–conscious about scarring left on her
chest from emergency surgery to remove a
tumour from her chest when she was treated
for cancer four years ago.
Jade Forshaw, a 19–year–old student from
Ormskirk, was chosen for her naturally
curvy figure.
And mum–of–two Sara Ainscow, 31, from
Skelmersdale, who works at Edge Hill
University is expecting her third child next
month.
She said: “I didn’t think I would be chosen
while expecting but I was really pleased.
“I think more pregnant models should be
used in advertising – you want to stay young
and trendy not be forced into wearing
unflattering or frumpy clothes.
“Just because you become pregnant does
not mean that you change in yourself, and
for me, that means you shouldn’t stop
wearing beautiful lingerie or feeling good
about yourself.
“It was fantastic to be chosen, we all had a
really fun day being pampered and didn’t
take ourselves too seriously!”
MP backs call
to abolish
Bedroom Tax
Report by Danielle
Thompson
ROSIE Cooper is backing a
national campaign to have
the Bedroom Tax repealed.
The West Lancs MP has
welcomed Labour leader Ed
Milliband’s pledge to scrap
the controversial legislation,
saying it will give hope to the
many disabled and
vulnerable people in West
Lancashire who have been
unfairly hit by what she
called “David Cameron’s
cruel tax.”
Ms Cooper said that the
Bedroom Tax affects more
than 400,000 disabled
people nationwide and
110,000 people in the North
West.
For many of those affected,
she says, there is nowhere
smaller to move to, hitting
vulnerable people with an
average bill of £720 a year
through no fault of their own.
And she claimed that
instead of reducing the
housing benefit bill, there
was now a real risk the
Bedroom Tax will cost more
MORE than 400 licensed
premises were visited by police
in Lancashire as part of a
week–long campaign to
highlight the realities of dealing
with drunkenness and
alcohol–related incidents.
Officers from Lancashire
Constabulary joined forces with
local councils, Lancashire Fire
and Rescue Service and the
health service to visit pubs,
bars, off–licences, takeaways
W
and hotels.
The action came as part of the
In Focus: Alcohol Harm
initiative – a national campaign
which saw police forces across
the country patrolling drinking
hotspots as the college and
university fresher’s season got
underway.
170 seizures of alcohol were
made, eight warning letters
were sent to licenced premises
for breaching their licence
conditions and an
improvement notice was issued
to an establishment for public
safety.
Test purchase operations were
also carried out across the
county. A total of 42 premises
were visited and 10 of these
failed by selling alcohol to
someone under–age.
Superintendent Stuart Noble
from Lancashire Constabulary
said: “Not only is alcohol often
a contributory factor to
anti–social behaviour, it is also
linked to violent crime,
domestic abuse and child
abuse.
“The police do a huge amount
of work day–in–day–out to
prevent alcohol–related crime
Police launch
crackdown
on burglars
gifts, we usually see an increase in domestic
burglaries so we really want residents to
take on board any crime prevention advice
we give them.
“It is disappointing to know that amongst
those that have taken place, many could
have been avoided through simple crime
prevention measures. We need people to
work with us to help themselves when it
comes to combating crime and locking out
thieves.”
Residents are being urged to keep front
and back doors locked and windows closed
– and if windows are open keep them on the
latch so that they cannot be opened further
from outside.
They should fit a door chain and use it
whenever they answer the door to an
unexpected caller, keep side gates locked
and consider fitting outdoor security
lighting.
As well as using a strong lock on sheds,
garages and other outbuildings, they should
keep an eye on neighbouring properties and
if they see anything suspicious contact
police.
than it saves.
The MP said: “Repealing
the Bedroom Tax is
absolutely the right thing to
do. Everything about this
policy is unfair. It is nothing
more than an attempt to slash
budgets by making the most
vulnerable in our
communities pay, whilst
millionaires are offered a tax
cut.
“We do need to make tough
choices on spending and in
these tough times we won’t
borrow more to pay for social
security. But we can and will
do things differently.”
She added that the next
Labour government would
repeal the Bedroom Tax
without extra borrowing.
To cover the £470m cost of
repealing the Bedroom Tax,
funds would be earmarked
from reversing George
Osborne’s recent tax cut for
hedge funds and also the
chancellor’s shares for rights
scheme which has been
rejected by businesses, has
opened up a tax loophole and
will lead to £1bn being lost to
the Exchequer according to
the Office for Budget
Responsibility.
“I think most ordinary
people will think Labour’s
plans to repeal the Bedroom
Tax are sensible and fair. The
tax cuts for hedge funds
introduced earlier this year
cannot be a priority when
disabled people are being
plunged into debt.
“The Bedroom Tax is a cruel
and unfair policy that hits the
vulnerable and what’s more
risks costing more than it
saves.”
and this campaign aimed to
raise awareness of the work we
do alongside other agencies.
“We will continue to work
with other agencies and
licensed premises in Lancashire
to try to keep our residents and
visitors safe.
“It is not just for the police to
tackle though. Alcohol harm is a
social issue that we all have a
stake in solving. Residents of
Lancashire can help by not
drinking excessively and by
taking responsibility for
themselves and their friends.”
