THE Crown Prosecution Service is to
investigate expenses claims made by
Lancashire police and crime commissioner
Clive Grunshaw when he was a county
councillor and police authority member.
The investigation follows complaints made
by a former councillor against Mr Grunshaw
who became Lancashire’s first PCC last
November.
The Independent Police Complaints
Commission (IPCC) has been looking into
the allegations and has referred its
investigation report to the Crown
Prosecution Service. The CPS will now
decide whether to bring charges.
Mr Grunshaw denies submitting untrue
expense claims. He has been suspended
from the Labour Party while investigations
are ongoing.
He said: “I understand the public interest
in this matter and I wish to reassure the
residents of Lancashire that during the last
nine months I have complied fully with the
investigative process and will continue to do
so. I maintain that at no point did I wilfully
submit claims which I knew to be untrue and
every expense claim I did make was
genuinely intentioned.
“While I await the Crown Prosecution
Service’s decision I will continue to carry out
my role as normal and be the public voice of
policing in Lancashire.”
The investigation was initiated following a
freedom of information request by former
Chorley South councillor, Conservative Sam
Chapman. He wanted to see mileage claims
made by Mr Grunshaw after attending
meetings at the council and the police
authority on the same days.
The Office for the Police and Crime
Commissioner (OPCC) has assisted the
Independent Police Complaints
Commission throughout their investigation
and will continue to provide assistance now
the matter has been referred to the Crown
Prosecution Service.

and solicitor for OPCC, commented: “This
investigation relates to claims made when
Clive Grunshaw was subject to the
Lancashire County Council expenses and
allowance scheme as a Lancashire County
Councillor and a member of Lancashire
Police Authority. The allegations do not
relate to any expenses claims during his
time as police and crime commissioner.
“While we await the decision of the CPS we
will continue to support the commissioner
in carrying out his statutory duties and we
look forward to a swift conclusion to this
matter.”

Butchers are a cut above!
Sweet taste of success as family firm scoop 18 medals

MEMBERS of a family butcher’s firm are
savouring the sweet taste of success after
winning an incredible 18 medals in a
prestigious regional competition.
G & E Hallsworth and Son Butchers, based on
Wigan Road, Ormskirk, won a gold, silver or
bronze medal in every category they entered at
the annual BPEX North West Regional
Roadshow at the Reebok Stadium in Horwich.
The yearly contest rewards the best products
with a Pork Product Excellence Award.
And Hallsworth and Son won nine gold
medals for homemade sausage rolls, melt
slices, dry cured back bacon, gammon and
homemade sausages – including their very
unusual pork and chilli with chunky chocolate
and orange flavour!
They also won eight silver medals for
homemade pork and black pudding sausages
and pork pies and pork and apple burgers, plus
a bronze medal for their homemade lamb
meatballs.
Chris Hallsworth said: “This time we entered
more products than we have ever done.
“One sausage variety we are particularly
proud of is a new flavour which we have only
recently developed, the pork and chilli with
chunky chocolate and orange sausage.
“The idea came from our new member of
staff, family friend Andrew Owen, who is a
master butcher.

pies of various flavours and sausage rolls and
slices, also our own homemade black pudding
and our own homemade savoury lamb meat
balls.
“We entered all of these together with the
usual home dry cured bacon and gammon, plus
six varieties of sausage and burger.
Competitors from throughout the North West
took part in the competition with more that
800 different entries in total.
Chris added: ”My wife Clare has created a
new range of pork pies and we now do black
puddings too so we were so pleased to get
silver medals with those. We have only been
making them for a month so it was hard to
