A SECOND trip to the far
north–west in five days put paid
to any hope of an extended run
for the Linnets in the FA Cup, as
the men in green exited at the
second qualifying stage.
After a 3–1 defeat to Kendal
Town in Westmorland on

bench in favour of Joseph
Camozzi and Jordan Williams,
and Mark Beesley made way for
Niall Cummins at
centre–forward.
Burscough’s now–familiar
bright start was present as ever,
with Darren Brookfield hurling a
free–kick just wide with only one
minute on the clock, and his
corner kick shortly after causing
panic in the penalty box.

Caddick also threatened to put
the visitors ahead, but it was
another Linnet who was to grab
the opening goal after twenty
minutes. Liam Dodd, close to the
halfway line, mistimed a
backpass to Tim Horn in the
Burscough goal to put
Workington ahead with barely an
effort of their own.
Dodd was nearly responsible for
a second goal a minute later when
he headed inches wide of the
Workington goal, but from here
onwards the Linnets offensive
was to peter out towards
half–time. Five minutes before
the break, Workington’s Ross
Wilson slammed a stunning shot
in to the Burscough goal, and the
Linnets left the field two goals
down but with most of the
chances.
The second half started in much
the same manner as the first did,
with Burscough doing plenty of
work in front of the opposition
goal. Caddick poked a shot inches
wide after Jordan Williams hit the
crossbar, before Goulding
introduced Mark Beesley in
favour of Williams, and Philip
Clarke replaced Brookfield in the
middle. Replacing two of
Burscough’s best creators from
the first period initially seemed
unwise, but Clarke’s presence was
quickly noticed by the home side
when his swinging corner was
headed over by Dodd. Beesley
went one better when he slotted a
pass across the box to Caddick,
who netted his fourth goal in as
many games with a quarter–hour
of play remaining.
Caddick almost grabbed an
equaliser only to be brought
down heavily inside the penalty
area, but his protests were in vain
as the referee signalled for play to
continue uninterrupted.
In a match of many chances for
Burscough, they were the
architects of their own downfall,
bowing out of the Cup by the odd
goal in three.
