No holiday during
school term time
by Ollie Cowan
PARENTS face being fined if
they take their children on
holiday during school term
time.
Changes to the Education
(Pupil Registration)
Regulations act of 2006
mean that all holidays must
now be taken within the set
vacation period and not
when classes are being
taught.
Any parent who does take
their child out of school to go
on holiday can now be
handed a penalty notice.
New rules governing the
regulations will come into
effect from September 2013.
From the start of the new
school year there will be no
discretionary period for
schools to allow absences
during term–time.
Parents of children who are
persistently absent through
sickness or for other reasons
or are regularly late to school
may have the absences
unauthorised and be liable to
a penalty notice issued by
their Council who will be
checking attendance
registers on a regular basis.
Local authorities across the
UK strongly oppose holidays
in term–time and all schools
New rules mean parents
face being fined if they take
children away from classes
New rules for holidays in term time will come into effect
from September 2013
are being asked to make
parents aware of this fact.
Schools will have the facility
to grant absences for
exceptional circumstances,
for example granting holiday
permission to the children of
parents who are serving
members of the armed
services on active duty.
The definition of
exceptional circumstances is
being left to each school
Governing Body to clarify but
must be able to withstand
robust scrutiny by regulatory
bodies such as OFSTED.
Councils could issue penalty
notices of up to £120. Failure
to pay may lead to further
legal action.
Where a family decides to
accept the fine and take the
holiday anyway, the absence
will also be recorded as
truancy. Schools have also
been asked to be vigilant for
examples of families taking
holidays but claiming to be
sick.
New business at ‘The Business Salon’
The Business is owned by husband and wife
Joe and Julie O’Connor. Joe opened the salon
in 1987 and was later joined by his wife who
gave up her nursing career to open a nail and
beauty service within the Business.
Julie has travelled to London and has worked
at ‘Fashion Week’ for three years consecutively.
She has also done nail art work for the
Hollyoaks set and even had the opportunity to
do ‘Baby Spice’s’ nails for a photo shoot. The
staff at the business have all been trained by
the salon and have remained loyal and are a
happy, committed team.
Stylist James qualified in 2007 and is full
time, Kate qualified in 2006 but is currently
working part-time after the birth of her baby
Lilly Mae in 2010.
We all enjoy our work within the Business
and that is reflected in the happy atmosphere
in the salon.
