The first farm was found in a house in Kevins Drive in Kirkby last September. Officers executing a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant discovered almost 50 cannabis plants in a bedroom upstairs. The second farm was found in a flat in Alexandra Drive in Bootle in February. More than 50 cannabis plants were found and two people at the address – two 24–year–old men from Wavertree and Aigburth – were arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation. They were questioned and subsequently released on police bail pending further enquries. Detectives in Sefton and Knowsley want to speak to 38–year–old Alan John Bride about both incidents Bride has links throughout Merseyside but in particular the Anfield and Walton areas of Liverpool and anyone who has seen him or knows where he is is asked to call police. The Champion • Wednesday 17 July 2013 CBA Visit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 9 Revealed – the hardcore sex and violence films watched by Ashworth Hospital patients Silence of the Lambs, Reservoir Dogs and porn films on DVD list – now MP seeks assurance they won’t be watched by violent offenders Exclusive report by VIOLENT sadistic films depicting rape, porn, torture, brutal murders and even patients escaping from mental instit– utions, are being screened at Ashworth Hospital in Maghull. The Champion has obtained a list of over 750 films on a library DVD list that patients have access to, many of which are 18–rated films and it even includes a wide range of pornographic material. Earlier this year the Government promised that prisoners in Britain’s jails will be banned from watching 18–rated films and movies depicting hardcore violent or sexual scenes. But the new rules do not currently apply to some of the most famous serial killers and rapists, such as Ian Brady, who are locked up in mental health institutions. Patients are kept in the security psychiatric hospital because they present a danger to other people or themselves and generally suffer from schizophrenia or other personality disorders. Films currently on Ashworth Hospital’s library list, include; Reservoir Dogs, Hostel 1 and 2, Deliverance, Saw V, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even The Silence of the Lambs. Four DVDs are classed as ‘XXX – sexual content’ and there is also a substantial range of hardcore pornographic videos. Maghull’s MP Bill Esterson said that he will be calling on the Government to make sure that the rules in Ashworth Hospital and prisons are the same when it comes to X–rated DVDs. Mr Esterson said: “Prisoners are not allowed to view certain X–rated DVDs and the same rules should apply to patients at Ashworth who have been convicted of violent criminal offences. David Raven “The government recently decided that X–rated DVDs are not available for prisoners and it makes sense that patients at Ashworth who have committed violent offences should face the same restrictions. “Ashworth is a hospital so the NHS is responsible. “I know how hard staff at Ashworth work to care for patients and to keep the rest of us safe and I would be astonished if patients who have been convicted of violent offences were allowed to watch violent DVDs. “But I will be checking with the government whether the same guidelines have been issued to Ashworth and to the prison service.” A spokesperson Merseycare, the body which runs Ashworth Hospital, said: “The hospital library, situated on site, has over 750 DVDs and the certificate rating is not recorded centrally, or in a way that is easily accessible. “All DVDs in the hospital library are checked and vetted by security staff before allowing a patient access to them. “Each patient’s request is considered individually by the security care team, in line with the NHS Safety and Security Directions 2011 which govern national arrangements in high secure psychiatric hospitals. “Each patient request for a DVD is considered individually, if any request causes concern for the security team it would be referred to the patient’s clinical care team.” The data comes about following a four month battle with Merseycare over the information. The Champion made an initial Freedom of Information request for a list of DVDs available to patients at Ashworth Hospital in April earlier this year. The request was refused on the grounds it would take staff more than 18 hours to gather the information but it was then agreed that the electronic library DVD list would be sent over. A DVD list was released 59 working days after the initial failed request and 24 working days after the follow–up request. Mr Esterson added: “I know that people in Maghull, Lydiate and Melling will want assurances that patients do not have access to inappropriate films and that the government has considered the need to include Ashworth Hospital in the new guidance. “Having met staff, the hospital has reassured me that violent offenders who are patients at Ashworth do not have access to X–rated DVDs. They also tell me that guidance was issued to them in 2011 by the government which is consistent with that in the prison service. “However, it is only right that we get confirmation from government ministers so I shall be writing to the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Justice to make sure that the rules in prison and in Ashworth Hospital are the same when it comes to X–rated DVDs. “Many people feel watching violent DVDs would be totally inappropriate for anyone who has committed a violent offence.” The Silence of the Lambs, which features a cannibal killer, is on the DVD list. 25,000 CUSTOMERS CAN'T BE WRONG...
