Men were caught
‘larking around
with knives’ in
pub, court told
by our Court Reporter
TWO MEN from Merseyside have been
sentenced after being caught ‘larking around’
with knives in a public house.
Both men were seen in the Queens Arms in
Warbreck Moor with a hunter’s knife and a
long bladed kitchen knife play fighting.
David Goldby, 32, of Roosevelt Drive, Aintree
and Neill McDonald, 30, of Marie Curie
Avenue, Netherton were both sentenced to six
months imprisonment suspended for 12
months.
Both were also placed under supervision for
12 months and have been imposed with a three
month curfew tag between 9 – 7am.
The pair pleaded guilty to possessing a knife
and were warned by a judge about their
behaviour saying the men were seen “acting
the goat, brandishing knives and play acting to
the amusement to some of the other people
who were in the pub.”

Representatives of the
Recorder David Heaton told David Goldby
and Neill McDonald that courts take a very
serious view of knife crime and both men
“have a problem with drink and in times gone
by resorted to violence.
“A combustible mixture of alcohol, tendency
to violence and possession of weapons can led
to devastating consequences for victims.
Rob Jones, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown
Court that on January 12 last year police called
by chance at the pub and saw the two men
acting suspiciously.
A search revealed a hunter’s knife, which was
by then in a sheath, and a long bladed kitchen
knife and when CCTV footage was checked the
defendants were seen play fighting with them.
There were not many customers in the
premises and the staff and few customers near
the men appeared to be amused and not
alarmed, said Mr Jones.
The court heard that both Goldby and
McDonald were remorseful. They had not
taken the weapons with them into the premises
and had found them there and had been
larking about with them.
