SEFTON is on track to join a ‘super<br />
council’ made up from other<br />
Merseyside authorities within the<br />
Liverpool City Region.<br />
The move is expected to allow<br />
council’s from around the city area to<br />
apply for a greater slice of funding by<br />
creating an area similar to Greater<br />
Manchester.<br />
ThiswillallowSeftontobeapartof<br />
Liverpool’s bid for money from the<br />
£2billion Single Local Growth fund<br />
pledged by the Government.<br />
At a meeting this Thursday, July 18,<br />
councillors have been recommended<br />
to approve the proposals.<br />
But the plans have yet to meet<br />

blasted by<br />
Southport Party<br />
everyone’s approval. Southport Party<br />
members believe it would make the<br />
resort more Liverpool–centric and<br />
Southport will miss out on key<br />
funding.<br />
John Lee, Southport Party treasurer,<br />
said: “We would be completely<br />
against it. Everything will be centred<br />
on Liverpool.<br />
“Liverpool will get the lion’s share of<br />
everything as they have done in the<br />
past. We want our fair share of any<br />
bucket of money that is coming our<br />
way, not just the few drops that we<br />
have been given in the past.<br />
“This has happened before and it<br />
will keep happening until we get out<br />
of Merseyside.”<br />
The report states: “The Liverpool<br />
City Region is in a position to take<br />
advantage of the Government’s policy<br />
reform agenda, enabling it to perform<br />
to its full potential.<br />
“It should also be noted that other<br />
city regions are in advanced<br />
discussions in developing their<br />
governance arrangements facilitated<br />
by existing legislation and there is a<br />
risk that the Liverpool City Region will<br />
miss out on development<br />
opportunities and funding if action is<br />
not taken at this time.”<br />
