Phew! Health
chief’s advice on
how to cope in
sweltering heat
‘LOOK after yourself and others’ is the
message Dr Janet Atherton, Sefton Council’s
Director of Public Health, is giving during the
current hot weather.
She advises: “It is better for your health to try
and avoid getting too hot and remember to
look out for those who are more at risk such as
older people, babies and young children, and
people with health problems.
“Also people who are outside being physically
active are more at risk such as sportsmen and
women and manual workers. Dehydration can
cause significant health problems and in some
cases cause death.”
Top tips to look after yourself and others
during the hot weather are:
•If you can, avoid going out in the hottest part
of the day (11am –3pm)
•Use a high factor sun cream
•If you must go out wear a hat, try and stay in
the shade and wear loose fitting clothes
•Drink plenty of cold drinks, avoid excess
alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks
•Ensure you have enough supplies of
medicines, food and non–alcoholic drinks, so
you don’t have to go out in the heat so often
•Avoid heavy and hot food, try and eat plenty
of fruit and salad as this helps keep you
hydrated
•If you feel sick or dizzy, keep out of the sun
and seek medical advice.
Dr Janet Atherton added: “During the hot
weather it is also important to take extra care
with food because bacteria can multiply very
quickly, this increases the risk of food
poisoning.
“Make sure you wash your hands properly
when handling food and if you are having a
barbecue make sure the food is cooked
thoroughly before eating.
“Not only do you have to be careful about
food but also bins and waste as they can attract
flies and maggots and smell in the heat try and
move bins out of direct sunlight, double bag
food waste and nappies, squeezing the air out
of the top before you tie them.
“Try and recycle as much as possible to
reduce waste.”
If you are worried about your health during
the hot weather, go to your nearest Walk–In
Centre or pharmacist, alternatively you can call
NHS 111 or visit your GP surgery.
