Moving on to secondary education is an important 

step for your son or daughter. This booklet has 

been produced to give you general information 

about secondary schools in Peterborough and 

how to apply for school places. The booklet 

is intended mainly for parents of children who 

are about to transfer from primary to secondary 

schools, but parts of it will be useful for parents 

with older children who are moving into the area. 

More detailed information is available from 

individual schools. They produce their own 

booklets and provide opportunities for parents 

to visit and find out more about the facilities and 

services available.

You are encouraged to use the online system – it is quicker, safer and provides you with a confirmation 

receipt.

Getting help - the council’s School Place Adviser 

The School Place Adviser provides a free and impartial service to families who may find it difficult to 

navigate the admissions process. The School Place Adviser can support you with information about all of 

our secondary schools and the application process; can help with form filling and your online application 

and arrange for translation and interpretation services if needed. 

The School Place Adviser cannot offer or guarantee places at any particular school or influence the 

secondary allocation process, nor will they make decisions on your behalf.

When can my child start secondary school? 

If your child was born between 1 September 2000 and 31 August 2001 we are able to offer a place at the 

beginning of the autumn term (September 2012) following receipt and processing of your application. 

Your child will be admitted into Year 7 at secondary school. 

Which schools can I apply to? 

We co-ordinate admissions with other local authorities which means that you can apply to any school in 

England. 

Peterborough residents 

All parents and carers of children who live in Peterborough must complete the Peterborough secondary 

application form (either online or on the paper copy found in this booklet). The schools you choose can

e in Peterborough or in any other local authority in England. 

Non-Peterborough residents 

If you do not live in Peterborough, you must contact your own local authority to request an application 

form. Contact phone numbers for our neighbouring authorities can be found at the beginning of this 

booklet. You must list the schools you wish to apply to on your own local authority’s form and they will let 

us know if you have requested a place at any schools in Peterborough. 

Your own local authority will process your application and will let you know at which school your child has 

been offered a place on 1 March 2012 regardless of where the school is located. 

Types of schools 

There are four different types of maintained (or state) secondary schools in Peterborough. 

Community schools 

These schools follow Peterborough City Council's oversubscription criteria. 

For the purposes of this particular year’s booklet, these schools are: 

Stimpson Community School. 

Hampton College and Ken 

Voluntary aided (VA) schools 

These schools are Church of England or Roman Catholic. The oversubscription criteria for these schools 

are set by the governing body of each individual school. 

In addition, voluntary aided schools may request that parents/carers complete a supplementary 

information form (SIF) to enable the governing body of the school to assess your application correctly. 

For the purposes of this year’s particular booklet these schools are: The King’s (The Cathedral) School* 

and St John Fisher Catholic High School. 

*The King’s (The Cathedral) School is also an Academy. 

Foundation schools 

The governing bodies of these schools set and publish their own oversubscription criteria. 

In addition, foundation schools may request that parents/carers complete a supplementary information 

form (SIF) to enable the governing body of the school to assess your application correctly. For the 

purposes of this year’s particular booklet these schools are: Jack Hunt School and Stanground College. 

Academies 

The governing bodies of these schools set and publish their own oversubscription criteria. 

In addition, academies may request that parents/carers complete a supplementary information form (SIF) 

to enable the governing body of the school to assess your application correctly. For the purposes of this 

year’s particular booklet these schools are: Arthur Mellows Village College, Nene Park Academy, 

Ormiston Bushfield Academy, The King’s (The Cathedral) School, Thomas Deacon Academy and The 

Voyager Academy. 

General information for each school 

Details of the websites for all of our secondary schools are provided later in this booklet. General 

information relating to attainment, OfSTED inspections, uniforms, etc. can be found on the schools 

individual websites. The latest information relating to whether certain schools have changed or will be 

changing their status to academies can also be found there. 

Making your application 

Peterborough residents 

If you live in Peterborough, you must do one of the following: 

apply online at www.peterborough.gov.uk/admissions 

if you do not have access to the internet or are unable to visit your local library or a school where 

you are able to get internet access, you can fill in the secondary application form which is 

available to download from: www.peterborough.gov.uk. You can also collect a form from any 

primary school or request one from the Admissions Team telephone: (01733) 747474.

Once you have filled in the form, please return it to the Admissions Team at Bayard Place. If you have 

applied online please do not complete a paper application form. 

Non-Peterborough residents

Completing the application form 

Applying online 

Please see previous pages for details of how to apply online. The information below is relevant to both 

online and paper applications. 

Your child’s details 

Enter your child’s details ensuring that address, postcode and date of birth are correct so that we can 

assess your application accurately. It is essential that this information is correct. We regularly check 

addresses and if they are not correct, we may have to withdraw our offer of a school place. The address 

you give us should be your child’s current permanent address at the time of application. ‘At the time of 

application’ means the closing date for applications. It is also essential that you give us the name of your 

child’s current primary school as this can assist us in any checks we need to make. 

The address you give us should be the address your child lives at from Monday to Friday. 

If your child lives at a different address from Monday to Friday, please provide and attach a copy of 

the Parental Responsibility Order or Residence Order for the person your child lives with and attach it 

to the application form. 

If there are reasons why your child is not living at your address, for example, if you and the other 

parent/carer do not live together, you and the other parent or carer must declare this individually in a 

letter and attach a copy to the application form. 

If your child regularly lives at more than one address Monday to Friday, the address you give should 

be the address where your child spends the majority of their time. You and the other parent or carer 

must declare this individually in a letter and attach a copy to the application form. 

Where a child spends equal amounts of school nights with both parents the address used will be the 

one most advantageous to the application. You should provide documentary proof of this situation 

and attach a copy to the application form. We may ask for further evidence of this at a later stage. 

If your child is living with another family or you are looking after someone else’s child the law states 

that you must tell your local Children’s Services department. When we consider your application we 

may carry out checks when your address and that of your child are not the same. 

Statement of Special Educational Needs and Children in Care 1 

Please indicate on the form if your child has a statement of special educational needs or is in care. 

Please name the local authority maintaining the statement or that has parental responsibility. 

Your details 

It is important that this information is correct as we use this to contact you about the admissions process. 

We also need to know your relationship with the child and whether you have parental responsibility as 

defined by the Children Act 1989. 2 

Your preferences 

Rank the schools you would like your child to attend in order of preference by writing the name of the 

school in the boxes with the school you want first in the 1 st preference section; 2 nd in the 2 nd 

preference box etc. 

We strongly recommend you use all of your options and list three different schools and that one of 

these schools should be your catchment area school. There is no advantage in listing only one 

school. 

Please note, however, that you may well be allocated any one of your preferences and you 

need to be sure that you are willing and able to get your child to that school.

If you choose to list just one school and your application is unsuccessful, you will have no say in the 

school you are allocated. You could be allocated a school some distance from your home if nearer 

schools have received more applications than there are places. 

There is no advantage gained by including the same school more than once as we can only process 

one application per child per school. 

Your reasons for applying for each of your three schools 

We need you to give us this information so that the local authority or school governors can correctly apply 

their oversubscription criteria. If you do not provide us with the correct information in this section it could 

mean that we cannot consider you under a particular criterion, e.g. if your child has a sibling connection 

with the school. 

Siblings 

Many schools give priority to brothers and sisters. It is important to show on the form if there will be a 

brother or sister at the school when your child will join the school. 

By sibling we mean a brother or a sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, step brother or 

sister, or the child of the parent/carer’s partner and in every case the child should be living in the same 

family unit at the same address. 

Every effort will be made to ensure that twins and those from multiple births can attend the same secondary 

school. 

Verified medical needs 

Only a few of our schools give priority if there are verified medical needs why your child should attend the 

school. You should read each school’s oversubscription criteria carefully. Requirements under this rule 

are very strict and very few children are admitted under this rule. Please remember that in order to be 

considered under this type of rule you must attach supporting evidence from a professional dealing with 

your child’s case. 

Providing us with additional information 

Write in the boxes any additional information which you feel will support your preference and always 

supply the relevant documentary evidence. It is important you do this especially if there is a reason 

which could affect the allocation. 

If you are submitting additional information or evidence to support an online application please remember 

to include your child’s name and date of birth. This will ensure that we can match your additional 

information to your application. 

Applicant’s signature 

In this section you are confirming that all the information you have provided on the form is correct as at 

the time of application and you have not deliberately given any false information. ‘At the time of 

application’ means the closing date for applications. 

Peterborough City Council, as a responsible admissionsauthority, reserves the right to verify any address 

given as the child’s permanent address, in order to ensure that it is allocating places appropriately and 

fairly. 

Where a suspected fraudulent application is identified during the allocation process (before allocation 

day), if relevant evidence is not provided and the application is deemed to be fraudulent, the family 

concerned would be offered the opportunity to provide their correct address, but advised that the 

application would be treated as late. We may also undertake sample spot checks. Failure to provide any 

document reasonably required by Peterborough City Council to verify residence after the allocation day 

will result in the place being withdrawn. We will then offer a place at the nearest school to the home 

address with an available place. This may be some distance away. 

False information 

If you deliberately give false information, the School Admissions Code allows for the offer of a school 

place to be withdrawn. Peterborough City Council takes this matter very seriously and WILL withdraw the 

offer of a place if it is proved to be a fraudulent application. 

Whistle blowing 

If you believe that someone else has given false information, we would encourage this to be reported 

telephone: (01733) 747474. All reports received will be investigated.

Supplementary Information Forms (SIF) 

Some schools require additional information from parents and will require a Supplementary Information 

Form (SIF) as well as the application form to be completed. Forms are obtainable from the school 

and/or the local authority and should be returned to the school concerned. 

Late applications 

If we receive your application after the closing date, we will treat it as late and deal with your application 

after those we received on time. If we receive your application late, you are less likely to be offered a 

place at a school you have listed. 

Moving house 

If your family is in the process of moving house, you must apply by the closing date, giving your child’s 

current address at the time of application in order for your application to be considered. If you can 

produce a copy of the exchange of contracts, or rental agreement for at least 6 months, attach a copy to 

the application form. We will be able to use your new address to process your application providing we 

receive the above documents by 17 January 2012. You will also be able to change the schools you have 

listed on your application form up to this date. We may ask at a later stage that you support this by 

sending us further evidence, for example a utility bill. 

If you cannot provide this evidence until after 17 January 2012, we will not be able to take your new 

address into account during our initial allocations. This is because after 17 January 2012, we will not be 

able to make any changes on our computer systems. However, we will be able to use your new address 

for any waiting list application you make. If you move before we send out the allocation letters, please 

send us evidence of your new address so that we can make sure that your allocation letter goes to the 

right address. 

Moving into Peterborough in Year 6 

If your family moves into the Peterborough area from another area (outside Peterborough), before 17 

January 2012, but after the closing date, your application will be considered as an on-time application 

because it would not have been possible for you to apply on time. We will ask you to produce a copy of 

the exchange of contracts, or rental agreement for at least 6 months, of your new home in Peterborough 

by 17 January 2012. We may ask at a later stage that you support this by sending us further evidence, 

for example a utility bill. 

If you cannot provide evidence of your Peterborough address until after 17 January 2012, we will not be 

able to take your new address into account during our initial allocations and we will treat your application 

as a late application. However, we will be able to use your new address for any waiting list application 

you make. If you move before we send out the allocation letters, please send us evidence of your new 

address so that we can make sure that your allocation letter goes to the right address. 

Changing your application information 

Online application 

If you apply online, you can change the information online at any time until the closing date, but once 

submitted and downloaded by us you would need to contact the Admissions Team in order to re-submit 

the application. Once the closing date has passed and before 17 January 2012 you can only change 

your preferences if there is genuine reason to do so, e.g. a change of address. A request to change a 

preference will be considered by the local authority on an individual basis. Please contact the

You are able to change your preferences up until the closing date. You can only change your 

preferences after the closing date and before 17 January 2012 if there is genuine reason to do so, e.g. a 

change of address. A request to change a preference will be considered by the local authority on an

Early or late transfer to secondary school 

It is very unusual for children not to transfer to secondary school at the end of Year 6. You can make a 

request for deferred or accelerated entry (to start a year later or earlier at secondary school) in very 

exceptional circumstances. 

If you feel that your child should be considered for early or late transfer to secondary school, you should 

first discuss this with the headteacher at your child’s primary school. The headteacher will then contact in 

the Admissions team to talk about your circumstances. In all cases account is taken of the individual 

child’s educational and social development and a judgement made of what is best for the child both now 

and in the long-term. 

How we process your application 

Each of your preferences is treated as a separate application; regardless of the order you have listed 

them in. Preference information is confidential; we are not allowed to tell the school whether you listed 

them as your first, second, or third preference as this is irrelevant to them. If a school receives more 

applications than they have places available, the oversubscription criteria are applied to decide who can 

be offered a place. Places are allocated in accordance with the published oversubscription criteria which 

are different for each school. 

Community schools 

If schools receive more applications than they have places available, all available places are allocated in 

accordance with the published oversubscription criteria. 

Academies, foundation, trust and voluntary-aided (VA) schools 

Academies, foundation, trust and voluntary-aided schools are responsible for their own admissions. If 

you have listed such a school, your details are passed on to that school. If a school receives more 

applications than they have places available, the governors will use their published criteria to allocate 

places. The school will then tell us if they can allocate your child a place. 

One offer of a school place for each child 

If your child meets the criteria for more than one of the schools you have asked for, we will look at the 

preferences you gave the schools and offer you a place at the highest preference school. If your child 

meets the criteria for only one of the schools on your list, we will offer a place there. 

The order of your preferred schools does not affect how the admission rules are applied to your 

application. Your application gives you the opportunity to make one, two or three separate 

applications, each of which will be processed and the published admission rules will be applied 

equally to each application. We only look at the order of your preferences if your child qualifies 

for a place at more than one school. 

How the preference system works 

For example: 

My highest ranked school is My second ranked school is My third ranked school is

In this example the child has applied for Blue School as their highest ranked and Red School as their 

next ranked school and Yellow School as a third choice. If the child qualifies for a place at all three 

schools, we would offer a place at Blue School. This is because Blue School is the highest ranked 

preference. The applications for Red School and Yellow School will be discarded and the places will be 

offered to other children. 

As you can see from this example it is important that you list the schools in order of preference, 

with the school you most want as your highest ranked. 

Although most children are offered a place at one of their preferred schools there are some children who 

are not offered a place at any of the schools they have listed because all the available places at each of 

the schools listed were taken by children who met the oversubscription criteria before them. 

Please note that you could be allocated any one of your preferences and you need to be sure that 

you are willing and able to get your child to that school. 

If you live in Peterborough and we have not been able to allocate your child a place at any of your 

preferred schools; we will offer your child a place at the nearest school to your child’s home address with 

available places. 

If you do not live in Peterborough and we have not been able to allocate your child a place at a 

Peterborough school you applied for; we will not offer your child a place at any other Peterborough 

school. You will then need to contact the local authority where you live, as it is their responsibility to 

provide you with a school place. 

Distance measuring 

When we measure distance we measure in a straight line from the child's home address to the school, 

using the National Ordnance Survey seed points and the local authority's computerised mapping system. 

(The seed point is taken from the Ordnance Survey’s (OS) Address-Point® dataset. It is used to locate 

individual residential and school addresses using grid references.) The straight line measurement is 

used purely as a tie-breaker; it has no relevance to how you would walk to the school. 

Letting you know 

If you live in Peterborough and have applied online, you will be able to access the site at 12.30am on 1 

March 2012 and see where we have been able to allocate you a place. If you applied using the paper 

form we will send you a letter by first-class post from our offices on 1 March 2012 telling you at which 

school we have offered your child a place. 

If you live outside of Peterborough your own local authority will offer you a school place either through 

their online system or by letter. 

What can you do if you do not get the school place you want? 

If we have not been able to offer your child a place at your highest ranked preference school, the offer 

letter will explain how your child’s name will automatically be placed on the waiting list and how you can 

apply for another school if you wish to do so. If there are still places available at an alternative school 

you could be offered a place or, in cases of oversubscription, be placed on the waiting list at that school 

or move to the appeals process. 

Appeals 

You have the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel if you do not get the school place offer you 

want. Information relating to how you go about this is included in the offer letter along with the timetable 

for an appeal to be heard before the end of the current academic year.

Waiting lists 

If you have not been offered your first preferred school, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list 

for that school. If you have not been offered your first or second preference you will be placed on the 

waiting lists for both schools. If you have not been offered any of your three preferred schools you will be 

placed on the waiting list for all three schools. 

You can ask to go on the waiting list for any other school(s). These may be the schools you listed on 

your application form or others at which you are interested in gaining a place. You will be asked to 

complete a revised application form. 

If a place becomes available at a school it will be offered to the child at the top of the waiting list which is 

based on the oversubscription criteria for the school regardless of when the application is made. This 

means that late applications will be included in the waiting list and will be placed according to the 

oversubscription criteria and not the date of application. 

It is important to remember that your child can move up or down the waiting list. For example, if 

other children higher on the list are offered places you could go up the waiting list, or if children 

who request to go on to the list after you meet the oversubscription criteria above your own 

personal circumstances, you could go down the waiting list. 

Waiting lists come into force on the day after allocation. 

In-year waiting lists 

Waiting lists will be maintained by the local authority for Peterborough Community Schools and by the 

individual schools if they are their own admission authority and will last for the lifetime of the year group in 

that school, moving from year to year. Waiting lists for out-of-county schools are maintained by the 

relevant authority responsible for the school. Please refer to their admission arrangements for details of 

how they are maintained. 

Fair access protocol 

Peterborough City Council has in place an overarching Fair Access Protocol which ensures that children 

to whom the protocol applies and who are without a school place take precedence over children on a 

school’s waiting list. 

Home to school transport 

It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child can get to school. 

Only a very small number of children qualify for free home to school transport. Unless you are on a low 

income as defined below if you make a preference for a school other than the nearest suitable school or 

the designated school (i.e. your catchment area school, or where there is no catchment school, the 

nearest school) you will be expected to make your own arrangements for your child’s journey to and from 

school and to meet any costs involved. 

When is transport available? 

Free transport to school is only available if the nearest suitable or designated school (see above) is more 

than three miles from the home address or you are directed to a school which is more than three miles 

from the home address. All distances are measured by the shortest safe walking route unless the route 

is considered unsafe. 

What kind of support is provided? 

Transport may be provided either by the provision of a bus pass or a seat on a contracted bus. 

Cycle allowance 

At the discretion of the Director of Children’s Services, an allowance of £30 per term may be paid to 

parents of secondary age pupils who are entitled to free transport but choose to use a cycle to travel to 

school. This allowance will only be paid if the cost of transport exceeds the amount of the cycle 

allowance.

Arrangements for low income families 

Low income families are defined as those whose children who are entitled to free school meals, or who 

are is in receipt of their maximum level of Working Tax Credit. 

Low income families are entitled to free home to school transport if they go to a suitable school between 

three and six miles away from their home address, as long as there are not up to five** suitable schools 

nearer to home. 

** This figure is under review as part of the revised policy consultation. 

Spare seats 

In some areas, children who are not eligible for free transport may be able to purchase a discretionary 

(spare) seat on a contracted bus. Places will depend on the availability of spare seats and will only be 

guaranteed on a term-by-term basis. You can apply by contacting the Passenger Transport Operations 

team (details below). 

Transport to The St Guthlac School, Crowland 

For those who live in Thorney village please note that should the proposed closure of The St Guthlac 

School go ahead, Peterborough City Council will not provide transport if you apply for a place at George 

Farmer Technology College in Holbeach. The nearest school to Thorney will then be Sir Harry Smith 

Community College, Whittlesey and the designated school remains Arthur Mellows Village College in 

Glinton.

Free school meals and other financial assistance 3 

Free school meals are available for all children at school whose parents or carers are on income support, 

or in receipt of income-based jobseekers’ allowance or child tax credit (depending on income), or on 

pension credit (for people aged 60 plus) or are on the register of Home Office Immigration and Nationality 

Directorate for Asylum Seekers. 

Schools in Peterborough are responsible for the processing and administration of free school meals for 

children attending their schools. Please contact the relevant secondary school. 

Applicants in receipt of working tax credit do not qualify for free school meals. 

Children with special educational needs 

All schools make provision to support children with special educational needs and are also aware of the 

particular needs of the very able. Some children have a statement of special educational needs and may 

attend either a mainstream school or special school. 

All governing bodies are required to admit to the school a child with a statement of special educational 

needs that names the school. Schools must admit such children whether they have places or not. 

If your child has a statement, before indicating your preference for a secondary placement, you will find it 

helpful to discuss the position with either the Assessment and Review Officers telephone: (01733) 

863686 / 863675 or the Parent Partnership Officer telephone: (01733) 863658. 

It is essential that you indicate on the application form that your child has a statement. In most cases, 

parents are advised to make a mainstream secondary placement preference. You may also express a

preference for a special school placement at the child’s annual statement review during Year 5. All 

Peterborough special school placements are considered by a special educational needs panel and if a 

child meets the criteria for a special school place they will be forwarded to a placement allocation 

meeting, held late in the autumn term before transfer. Parents are informed of the decision after the 

meeting. 

Schools will seek to accommodate pupils with physical disabilities wherever possible. However, by their 

very nature, some buildings are more suitable than others. Parents of children requiring wheelchair 

access should contact the individual school to check suitability.

Transferring between secondary schools 

Once your child has joined a school and you consider there are strong and valid reasons for requesting a 

transfer to another school you should first discuss the matter with the headteacher of your child’s school. 

If the situation cannot be resolved satisfactorily you should approach the Admissions team and ask for an 

in-year admissions form. Separate information is available concerning the in-year admissions process. 

Please bear in mind that changing schools can be a major disruption to your child’s education and 

amongst other issues you should consider how your child will travel to the new school. 

Moving into the area – the in-year process 

If you are moving into the Peterborough area and are looking for a school place part way through the 

school year, or outside the normal transfer stages you should contact the Admissions team and ask for 

an in-year admissions form. Separate information is available concerning the in-year admissions 

process. 

The law relating to school admissions does not allow the local authority to reserve places for 

children moving into the area. 

Children from overseas 

If you come from another country, you are a temporary resident in Peterborough and your child is of 

compulsory school age (five to 16 years), he/she may be eligible for admission to one of our schools. 

This is subject to your particular circumstances and the country you are from. If your child is entitled to 

be educated in this country you must apply through the normal process. Allocation of a place depends 

upon the length of stay of the family and whether the appropriate course can be offered. For further

The governors will give priority to children with a statement of special education needs, which names the 

school on the statement. Parents are strongly encouraged to visit the school by arrangement, before 

naming King’s on the statement, so that they are confident that the school can meet their child’s needs. 

The governors will seek to preserve the existing character of the school by admitting 135 pupils on the 

following basis and in the following order of priority. This will give a year group of 150 pupils, with the 135 

pupils joining the 15 pupils who were admitted in to the school in Key Stage 2. Should less than 15 pupils 

transfer from Year 6 the remaining places will be offered under Group A criteria four to six. 

Group A - A maximum of 120 places will be allocated in the following order of priority:- 

1. Children in care whose parents/carers are worshipping members of the Church of England or 

Methodist Church. 

2. Children of worshipping members of the Church of England or Methodist Church (maximum of 74 

places). 

3. Other children in care. 

4. Brothers and sisters of children attending the school at the time of entry. 

5. Children of worshipping members of other Christian denominations or of other faiths. All 

categories will be considered equally with no priority order. 

6. Children of any other applicants to the limit of places available, places being awarded to the 

child/(ren) living closer(est) to the school as indicated by a straight line from the main school 

reception entrance to the child’s home, as calculated using Peterborough City Council’s GIS 

process. 

Group B - Pupils selected by ability as measured by the school's assessment procedures in merit 

order for a maximum of 15 places. 

1. Twelve of these places will be selected on overall academic ability. 

2. Three of these places will be selected on musical aptitude. 

If there are unallocated places in B1 due to lack of suitable candidates these places will be allocated in

B2 and vice versa. If there are insufficient successful applicants for B1 and B2 additional places will be 

allocated in Group A. 

Notes 

1. ‘Children in care’ - A child or young person is regarded as a ‘child in care’ when they are 

accommodated or in care. If they are accommodated this means that their parent/s retain parental 

responsibility and can ask for them to be returned home at any time. If they are subject to a care 

order then the local authority shares parental responsibility with the parent/s and decides where 

the child should live. Children in care are cared for in a number of different settings including 

foster homes, children’s homes and residential schools. 

2. In relation to categories A1 and A2 the application will need to be signed by a Church of England 

Priest or by a Methodist Minister, or if a Priest or Minister is unavailable during an interregnum a 

church warden or church leader. 

3. In relation to categories A1 and A2 evidence of worship from the Priest, Minister or leader of the 

religious community concerned, must be submitted in support of an application. This evidence 

must provide information about the parental involvement in the life of their religious community, for 

at least the last five years and also refer to all points stated in the chair of governor’s letter to 

parents. 

4. Category A4 – Children are siblings if: 

- they are half or full brother or sister, living together in the same household; 

- they are adoptive or foster brother or sister, living together in the same household; 

- their parents are married and parents and children live together in the same household. 

5. In Category A5 – the application form will need to be signed by the religious leader who must 

provide evidence in support of the application. This evidence must provide information about the 

parental involvement in the life of their religious community, for at least the last five years and also 

refer to all points stated in the chair of governors letter to parents. 

6. The governing body will deal with late applications after all of the ‘on time’ applications have been 

processed. 

7. Parents/guardians/carers not offered a place for their child due to the school having admitted up 

to the published admission number (PAN, 150) will be advised of their right to appeal. 

8. Pupils admitted to category B1 will be required to take the governors’ entrance examination and 

will be ranked in order of merit. The examination will consist of tests in English, mathematics and 

verbal reasoning. A minimum total score of 100 out of 145 will be required to gain admission, 

places being offered strictly in descending order of each applicant's total score. Examples of the 

English and mathematics tests are in The King’s School Year 7 admissions handbook. 

9. Pupils will be selected for category B2 by audition, carried out by the music staff of The King's 

School. At the audition the candidate will be expected to: 

i) Perform a piece of his/her choice on the main instrument or voice. Candidates who play 

another instrument may, if they wish, perform a second piece. 

ii) 

Respond to various aural tests which might include: 

1. Repetition of a melody 

2. Clapping a rhythm 

3. Identification of time signatures/beats in bars.

The following scoring system will be used to determine the successful music applicants.

Each applicant will be awarded a total mark for the audition and places will be awarded to the top three 

scoring pupils. 

If at any stage, a tie-breaker is required places will be allocated to the child(ren) living closer(est) to the 

school as indicated by a straight line from the main school entrance to the child’s home, as calculated 

using Peterborough City Council’s GIS process. 

Parents who are considering applying for a place for a child born after 31 August 2001 must discuss the 

situation with the headteacher of The King’s School before submitting the application. 

If the school has more applications than places available parents may elect to place their child’s name on 

a waiting list. Pupils will be placed on the waiting list in strict order according to the oversubscription 

criteria on the admissions policy. If a place becomes available at the school, places will be allocated 

according to these criteria. 

The waiting list will be held from the allocation of places date, until the end of Year 10. Parents will be 

asked to contact the school using the form provided to request that their child’s name is placed on the 

waiting list.

allocated a place in accordance with a fair access protocol will take preference over those on the waiting

Oversubscription criteria 

Thomas Deacon Academy has an agreed admission limit of 330 pupils. Where fewer than 330 

applications for places are received, the academy will offer places to all those who applied. 

Siblings within the same year group and living at the same address will be treated as a joint application. 

If they are in the same band and at the same address they will both be offered a place (even if they are 

the 33 rd and 34 th children within a band). If they are in different bands, then they will both be offered a 

place. Should one child be outside the allocated 33, then s/he will be offered a place. Both these 

scenarios might result in a band becoming oversubscribed to accommodate siblings within the same year 

group but will not penalise other children. 

Note that children are siblings if: 

• They are half or full brother or sister, living together in the same household; 

• They are adoptive brother or sister, living together in the same household; 

• Their parents/carers cohabit and the parents/carers with their children live together in the same 

household. 

Procedures where the Thomas Deacon Academy is oversubscribed 

Where the number of applications for admission exceeds the published admissions number, places will 

be allocated on the basis of fair banding in line with the Department for Education (DfE) School 

admissions code. All applicants naming the academy on their preference form will take a standard 

assessment such as the National Foundation for Eduacational Research (NFER) non-verbal reasoning 

tests and will be placed into ability bands. 

There will be 10 bands and 33 children will be admitted from each band. Where an individual band is 

oversubscribed, after the admission of pupils with statements of special educational needs where the 

Thomas Deacon Academy is named on the statement, priority will be applied to applicants in the order 

set out below: 

a) Children in care 

Note that a child or young person is a child in care when they are accommodated or in care. If they are

Notes 

Testing will be carried out by the academy in the autumn. It is not an entrance test and is only used to 

allocate a child to a particular band. By taking 33 from each band, the academy is guaranteed to have 

the full spread of abilities in each year group. 

Thomas Deacon Academy does not operate a catchment area. 

The sibling criterion does not apply to Thomas Deacon Academy.
