Roman gold ear-ring (<strong>2005</strong> T166)<br />

Date: Probably 2nd–3rd century AD<br />

Discovery: Found by Mr D Bailey while metaldetecting<br />

in April <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Description: A Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular<br />

form, seemingly complete, though distortion obscures<br />

most of the front face. The edges are lightly scalloped<br />

and the simple openwork decoration comprises a<br />

design based on small crescentic piercings. It is not<br />

possible to determine the form of the centre of the<br />

plate. The long tapered hook, also distorted, is fastened<br />

to the centre of a cruciform brace which is soldered to<br />

the back of the main plate. Dimensions: 14.2 x 9.4mm;<br />

weight: 2.12g.<br />

Discussion: The ear-ring is Allason-Jones Type 11<br />

(Allason-Jones 1989, p. 8), see also Sudbury area,<br />

Treasure Annual Report 2003, no. 65.<br />

172. Gillingham, Kent: Roman grave assemblage<br />

with 2 gold necklaces (<strong>2005</strong> T444)<br />

Date: Early–mid 3rd century AD<br />

Discovery: Found by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd<br />

during controlled excavation in October <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Description:<br />

1. Fragment of a bracelet or necklace (KKGF 03 (205).<br />

sf 233). The surviving section is composed of a series<br />

of gold filigree double-loop links, the bars of which<br />

were threaded with polyhedral faceted beads of the<br />

green stone, identified by surface analysis as variscite.<br />

Seven beads survive. The terminals consist of a hook<br />

and eye attachment, each of which were soldered onto<br />

the last link chain by means of a triangular plate. Both<br />

terminals survive attached to each other; one part of<br />

the chain is missing, and it is unclear exactly how long<br />

the chain was originally, although it has been suggested<br />

that this item of jewellery was a necklace turned into<br />

a bracelet for a child, other examples of which are<br />

known. Surviving length: c. 132mm; weight: 3.37g.<br />

2. An incomplete necklace (KKGF 03 (205). sf 234)<br />

constructed in the same manner as no. 1, although the<br />

terminal, of which only the hook part survives, has a<br />

rectangular sheet metal cover plate wrapped around it.<br />

The chain is irregularly interspersed with a series of cut<br />

stones: there are 10 reddish-brown polyhedral faceted<br />

garnets, two disc-shaped garnets, and three cylindrical<br />

emeralds of different sizes, the stones identified by<br />

surface analysis. It is possible that some of the beads<br />

were added to substitute missing originals, with the<br />

ten faceted garnets perhaps representing the original<br />

stones and the other, cruder stones later replacements.<br />

There are a number of links which do not have a stone,<br />

and this would imply that the necklace had been in use<br />

for some time. Surviving length: c. 266mm;<br />

weight: 4.32g.
