432. hurstbourne priors, hampshire: medieval<br />

silver-gilt finger-ring (2006 T71)<br />

Date: Late 15th–early 16th century<br />

Discovery: Found by Mrs T Jenner while metaldetecting<br />

in February 2006.<br />

Description: A finger-ring set with a clear stone,<br />

probably rock-crystal. The back of the hoop is cabled<br />

and the shoulders left plain apart from a central groove<br />

which widens into a spandrel occupied by a simple<br />

foliate motif. The bezel is raised and moulded into<br />

a pie-crust form to simulate the petals of a flower.<br />

Diameter: 22mm; length: 26mm; height: 10mm.<br />

433. Ilam, staffordshire: medieval gold finger-ring<br />

(<strong>2005</strong> T519)<br />

Date: Late 15th–early 16th century<br />

Discovery: Found by Mr L Wagstaff while metaldetecting<br />

in October <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Description: A Medieval finger-ring, iconographic in<br />

type, with a representation of the Virgin and Child on<br />

its octagonal bezel. The shoulders are decorated with<br />

sprigs of foliage and the hoop is slightly chamfered and<br />

decorated with a triangular area of cross-hatching at its<br />

widest points.<br />

Disposition: Potteries Museum & Art Gallery had<br />

hoped to acquire but withdrew; returned to finder.<br />

434. bexhill area, East sussex: medieval silver or<br />

silver-gilt finger-ring (<strong>2005</strong> T424)<br />

Date: Late 15th–early 16th century<br />

Discovery: Found by Mr C Chapman while metaldetecting<br />

in May <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Description: A Medieval finger-ring, with a doublefaceted<br />

bezel and a cabled hoop. The ring is badly<br />

abraded and almost certainly carried the image of<br />

one or two saints, though no depiction is clearly<br />

distinguishable. The shoulders are decorated with<br />

heart-shaped flowers resembling tulips, either side of a<br />

cabled band.<br />

Disposition: Bexhill Museum hopes to acquire.<br />

finger-ring (2006 T528)<br />

Date: Early 16th century<br />

Discovery: Found by Mr M East while metal-detecting<br />

in October 2006.<br />

Description: A late Medieval finger-ring, with a<br />

D-shaped section. The hoop is decorated with a single<br />

zigzag groove, juxtaposed with small decorative<br />

punches. Diameter: 21mm.<br />

Disposition: Buckinghamshire County Museum.<br />

436. Winterslow, Wiltshire: medieval silver fingerring<br />

(2006 T64)<br />

Date: Early 16th century<br />

Discovery: Found by Mr A Brown while metal-detecting<br />

in August <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Description: A late Medieval finger-ring formed of a<br />

plain, flat band terminating in two clasped hands. A<br />

series of engraved ridges represent cuffs from which the<br />

hands emerge.<br />

Disposition: Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum, the<br />

finder’s share generously donated.<br />
