North Texas State Fair and Rodeo by Andrea Hikel It’s that time <strong>of</strong> year again. The North Texas Fair and Rodeo is saddling up for its 81th year <strong>of</strong> live music, carnival rides, rodeo action and much more. Over <strong>the</strong> last twenty years, attendance to <strong>the</strong> fair and rodeo has grown dramatically and <strong>the</strong> entertainment is constantly improving. There was an increase from 2006 to 2007 taking attendance from 30,000 to 125,000. In 2000, headliner concerts were introduced to <strong>the</strong> mix, making it not only a fair and rodeo, but a live music event. Festivities will kick <strong>of</strong>f on Friday, August 21th and continue through Saturday, August 29rd. One day admission, that includes <strong>the</strong> rodeo and <strong>the</strong> concert <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day, is $12 for adults (13 and over), $5 for children (7-12 years) and children six and under are free. Many may be concerned about <strong>the</strong> Texas summer heat, but you will find over 110,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> shaded and air conditioned space to protect you from <strong>the</strong> sun’s rays. If bull riding action is what you are looking for, North Texas Fair and Rodeo will provide nine days <strong>of</strong> roping, riding and pr<strong>of</strong>essional bull fighting. In <strong>the</strong> Miller Light Rodeo Arena <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) will display <strong>the</strong>ir skills August 21-23. For <strong>the</strong> second year <strong>the</strong>re will be an Invitation Ranch Rodeo that will allow amateur Texas cowboys to compete. Tuesday and Wednesday will be a 21 and under rodeo and Thursday- Saturday will be <strong>the</strong> Miller Light Bull Blowout, Cowboy Protection Contest and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Bullfighting. Live music performances on <strong>the</strong> Budweiser stage include Johnny Lee, Tejas Bro<strong>the</strong>rs, Jake Hooker, Brandon Ryder, Deryl Dodd and Roger Creager. O<strong>the</strong>r performances include <strong>the</strong> Randy Rogers Band, Jamey Johnson and Eli Young Band. The fairgrounds will also be packed with over 100 commercial vendors, fair rides, and a Kid’s Zone equipped with a peewee rodeo, bounce house and pony rides. The Swamp Master Alligator, Pedal Tractor Pulls and <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Horse will be <strong>the</strong>re for your entertainment. O<strong>the</strong>r events include livestock shows, children’s art, BBQ Cook <strong>of</strong>f, parade, pageants and much more.
