DRMC Employee Named 2009 DFW Hospital Council’s Employee of the Year I David Bridges, EMT-P t is with great pleasure that Denton Regional Medical Center announces that an Emergency Department employee, David Bridges, EMT-P, was named as the 2009 Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council’s Employee of the Year. This award is presented on an annual basis at the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Education and Research Foundation Workforce Center’s Employee of the Year Luncheon at the Arlington Convention Center. The luncheon is about real “Lone Star Heroes” because it pays tribute to hospital non-management employees – the nurses, technicians and educators. This year’s speaker was Mrs. Anita Perry, First Lady of Texas. “The Employee of the Year Luncheon has become an annual opportunity to honor the North Texas hospital workforce,” said Sally Williams, Workforce Center director at the Foundation. “This event offers employees a chance to be recognized for their dedicated work. It’s a celebration of great employees making a difference in our hospitals.” David Bridges, EMT-P has been employed as a Paramedic in the Emergency Department since June of 2000. He has continued his education while employed with Denton Regional Medical Center and will soon complete degree requirements to become a Registered Nurse. He is certainly one of the best examples of caring and compassion that can be found at Denton Regional Medical Center. A key team member of the Emergency Department, David can be counted on to go above and beyond the standard expectations for his position. David is admired and respected by everyone working in the Emergency Department because they all know that David will complete any task that is asked of him. He is able to establish a trustful rapport with his patients and demonstrates high moral and ethical convictions in his work. Aside from his daily responsibilities as a Paramedic, David has developed a successful Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT). His responsibilities with the HERT include overseeing a twelve member team, communicating hospital responsibilities during an emergency response, and maintaining a continual state of emergency response readiness for the hospital. David also volunteers his time to the community. He is actively involved with the Texas-4 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), which travels across the United States to provide life saving care after natural disasters. During 2008 alone, David and the Texas-4 DMAT team were deployed to provide medical care for victims of Hurricane 34 www.380Guide.com Dolly, Hurricane Gustav, and Hurricane Ike. Hurricane’s Gustav and Ike required David and his team members to be deployed for over a month at a time, during which time they were responsible for many different assignments – from receiving patients at DFW International Airport, to setting up a makeshift emergency room on the Rice University campus and establishing a patient care clinic in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Galveston. During these deployments, David, along with other members of the medical staff, treated patients who had been affected by the disasters, many of whom had lost everything they owned and relied on these makeshift clinics for medical care. David is also involved with emergency planning on a state and local level. He is currently part of a group developing a Medical Task Force for the State of Texas which would be responsible to respond to local and state disasters. The group’s first step in establishing the Medical Task Force is to provide education to the nineteen counties in the North Texas region on how to organize, implement, and operate a mobile medical unit. David has assumed the leadership role in this first step by creating and developing the curriculum for the education events. He is working to develop a training manual and presentation to be able to train the counties in the North Texas region over a two-day seminar. David has spent many hours completing research and speaking with state and local agencies in addition to writing the material so that the other members of the group will be ready to begin educating the region by April 2009. David acts an instructor for North Central Texas College in the Emergency Medical Services department. He teaches EMT and Paramedic students, instilling them with the theory and hands-on skills necessary for them pursue their careers and impact the healthcare industry by saving lives. David also teaches the Medical Emergencies course at North Central Texas College, a course that is described as a course most instructors “dread” teaching because of the complexity of the material. David’s passion for emergency response management and his active involvement in emergency planning at the hospital and throughout the country have allowed him to successfully teach the material to his students. David’s students appreciate the knowledge he provides to them and because of his teaching methodology combined with his vast knowledge and experience, are able to complete his classes with success. In May of 2008, David volunteered to participate in the HCA/ Habitat for Humanity Build project in New Orleans, Louisiana. David was chosen to represent Denton Regional Medical Center in this project because of the many hours he has volunteered to provide disaster assistance through his participation in the Texas-4 DMAT and because of his dedication to emergency management in his local and state community. This project was a five-day build in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, to finish and dedicate 25 homes and start the construction of another 25 homes. “I enjoyed the opportunity to come together with individuals in order to accomplish something that initially seemed impossible. It was a good feeling to know that so many people were willing to put aside their lives for a week to help other people who had lost so much. Working with complete strangers, who hold different jobs within the HCA Corporation, building new friendships while building this house, and feeling as though I was a part of a larger family is something that I will truly never forget. Looking back, I will always remember meeting and forming friendships with individuals from across the U.S. and Canada who also participated in the project.” David Bridges, EMT-P Denton Regional Medical Center is very fortunate to have such compassionate employees. David Bridges has become an inspiration to those around him. His caring attitude has touched the lives of so many in our hospital and community and has extended beyond the borders of our state. David does not do any of these deeds or acts of volunteerism to seek praise or recognition; he does these acts of kindness very humbly and out of a sincere wish to help his fellow man. David is truly an example of the caring culture of our hospital and organization.
