Generations of Award-winning Stallions by Andrea Hikel As we drove down the smooth road that wound its way around the well-kept fences of Valor Farm, Ken Carson, General Manager, explained each stage of the breeding and foaling process. He pointed to each pen explaining which horses occupied the area, for how long and what their next location would be and why. He educated me on the sand content of the north Texas soil. It became clear why Pilot Point is an outstanding place to raise horses. The 393 acres of rolling hills and beautiful horses is breathtaking. Clarence and Dorothy Scharbauers’ interest in Thoroughbreds began with the 1959 Kentucky Derby, which Dorothy’s father, Fred Turner, Jr., won with Tomy Lee. Dorothy, who passed away in 2005, learned the industry from her father and won her first stakes race in 1953 at the age of twenty-two. Clarence is a former President of the American Quarter Horse Association who comes from a family rich in banking, oil and ranching history. The Midland natives set out to have a Derby winner of their own and managed to do so when they purchased a yearling who they named Alysheba. He won the 1987 Kentucky Derby, the title of 1988 Horse of the Year and retired as the world’s richest Thoroughbred. With a love of Thoroughbred and Quarter horses and an extensive background in breeding, training and racing, the Scharbauers then established Valor Farm in 1991. Together, they built the horse farm on knowledge, experience and love. Some of the top stallions in the southwest have stood at Valor Farm. Early Flyer was the #1 Southwest Freshman and Sophomore Sire and the sire of a 2008 Texas Champion. Magic Cat has not only produced outstanding crops of ten percent stakes winners and twelve percent stakes performers, but also the 2008 Texas Champion and Horse of the Year. Another stallion by the name of Wimbledon was the winner of the $600,000 G2 Louisiana Derby. Valor Farm is currently home to the 7th and 8th generation of 30 www.380Guide.com
some of Clarence’s original Quarter Horse broodmares. Among the nineteen miles of fencing you will find four stallions and approximately 150 mares. About fifteen employees work around the clock to ensure the farm is run smoothly and efficiently.
