Sails to Sinai<br />
February 26 saw the 5800 tonne Sinaibound<br />
heavy lift ship HMAS TOBRUK<br />
make a two-day stop-over at HMAS<br />
STIRLING in Cockbum Sound, WA, before<br />
sailing for Ashdod in the Mediterranean.<br />
Comm<strong>and</strong>ed by Comm<strong>and</strong>er Robert Walls. RAN,<br />
TOBRCk •-•I making its first visit to Western <strong>Australia</strong>, h<br />
berthed at 0700 hours on the hnday <strong>and</strong> sailed ihc following<br />
Sunday at I000 hours,<br />
HMAS TOBRUK took eight days to make the voyage from<br />
Brisbane 10 HMAS STIR1 INC where it arrived in immaculate<br />
condition.<br />
On board the tank deck TOBRUK carried eight K \ \l<br />
white-painted, unarmed Iroguots helicopters, to be used in an<br />
observer's role, patrolling boundaries <strong>and</strong> transporting supplies in<br />
the demilitarised /one <strong>of</strong> the Sinai. The helicopters are from No<br />
y Squadron, Amberley. Queensl<strong>and</strong>.<br />
During its brief visit loSTIRLING the senior RAAF Officer<br />
in Western <strong>Australia</strong>, the Comm<strong>and</strong>ing Officer <strong>of</strong> RAAI base<br />
Pcarcc. Air Commodore Norman Afhworth <strong>and</strong> seven senior<br />
RAAf <strong>of</strong>ficers took the opportunity to view the ship.<br />
The 100-plus <strong>Australia</strong>n contingent was to be established at<br />
HI Goran by March 20.<br />
