Bernie Briere Christening
February 26, 2009
Harley Marine Services christened the Bernie
Briere on February 26th in Portland, Oregon. The
christening was unlike any other, instead of having
the celebration at U.S. Barge’s shipyard or at the
Harley Marine office, guests boarded a river cruise
boat, the Crystal Dolphin. The vessel cruised the
Willamette River along Portland’s waterfront until it
reached the U.S. Barge facility where the vessel
was tied alongside the Bernie. Salutations and the
ceremony were conducted inside the Crystal
Dolphin by Keith Barnes and Harley Franco of
Harley Marine Services and Corey Yraguen of U.S.
Barge. Father Edward Alstock blessed the barge
so that while operating in the Harley Marine fleet,
the vessel will operate safely and productively. Rosie
Mathews and Cathy Martin, Bernie’s sisters,
christened the barge on the bow of the Crystal Dolphin.
HMS proudly dedicated this barge to the memory of
Bernie Briere, a hero and friend in the fight against
cystic fibrosis. Bernie battled with cystic fibrosis
throughout his entire life, but he never allowed the
disease to slow him down. He was a tremendous
athlete who excelled in baseball, basketball and
golf. Bernie’s spirit touched the lives of family, friends
and those who knew him only briefly. Cystic fibrosis
eventually took his life at the young age of 21. His
courageous behavior will forever be remembered
in our fleet. Harley Marine Services is honored to
name the barge after Bernie, he will remain in our
hearts as a fighter and advocate for cystic fibrosis.
In attendance were Christina Smith from Conoco-
Phillips, Bernie’s mother Janet and two sisters
Rosie and Cathy, customers, clients as well as
employees of U.S. Barge and Harley Marine. The
Bernie Briere will enter service in the Puget Sound
and will then be transferred to Los Angeles and
Long Beach Harbors.
