2013
It is with great pleasure and pride that I write of the
fantastic achievements of our students this year. Put
simply we achieved a 100% pass rate in all
A Level subjects, making us the highest performing
Sixth Form in the area. These results continue our
tradition of students achieving better than their
expected grades. Indeed, we are amongst the top
colleges in the country for stretching students so
they achieve their very best*.
I am also pleased to announce that this year marks
the opening of MC6, Middlesbrough College’s brand
new Sixth Form serving the Tees Valley and North
Yorkshire. The £6.5million pound investment in
this modern and technologically advanced facility
represents an important development in A Level
provision in the region. There is such a deep well of
talent in the area, and the young people of the Tees
Valley deserve no less than the very best - the best
teachers, the best facilities and the best prospects.
I’ve spoken of the fantastic achievements of our
students, and the wonderful facilities offered by our
new building. Of equal importance is the support
that we offer to nurture and fulfil the potential and
promise of young people. I think that these ideas are
best embodied in the values of MC6, which can be
expressed as follows:
6
middlesbrough college
Sixth Form
A Partnership
of Learning
• A college where academic endeavour and
excellent teaching are the norm
• A college where students and their parents,
peers and teachers work in partnership
• A college of high aspiration and achievement
• A college which is inspirational and full of
energy
• And a college where students become
successful and motivated learners ready for
university, work and life
I would also like to take this opportunity to pass on
to you my very best wishes for your exams this year.
I hope that you join us at MC6: the future of Sixth
Form Education in the Tees Valley.
IN THE NEWS
There is much more to being a student at
Middlesbrough College than attending classes and studying.
FOUR A’S ADD UP TO SUCCESS
18 year old Inteshar Mahbub from Darlington has
experienced some change in his young life – but it
certainly hasn’t held him back.
He moved to Middlesbrough three years ago
from East London and began his studies at Prior
Pursglove College before deciding it wasn’t for him.
Inteshar has obviously been vocal with his glowing
report of Middlesbrough College as his sister Isabel
also begins her studies in the new Sixth Form
Centre, known as MC6, which opens this September.
He then moved to Darlington following his
enrolment at Middlesbrough College where he is
studying AS Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics
and Chemistry. After just one year, Inteshar can now
boast four grade A’s in his AS Levels and plans to be
just as successful in his second year A Level studies.
“I’m really pleased with my results. I thought I
might not be good enough for University but I
definitely want to go now. I’d like to go to Oxford or
Cambridge but not sure which – hopefully I’ll have
the choice. “I also want a gap year as I’d like to follow
in my father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. And I’d like
to travel too.
“There are so many options! Thankfully I’m still
young and intend to work hard at my studies so
that I have plenty of choices. My best choice was
choosing Middlesbrough College – it’s the best.”
From September, Inteshar will also be able to use
the Middlesbrough College bus service which
is being introduced from the Darlington area
following requests from current and potential
students.
A LEVELS AT
6
middlesbrough college
Sixth Form
WHAT GRADES DO I NEED TO STUDY A LEVELS?
You will need 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above, including English and Maths and at least one grade B, to
enrol onto the full A Level Programme. Please note that there are additional entry criteria for some
individual subjects and it is important that you check these carefully on the pages that follow.
HOW LONG WILL MY COURSE LAST?
A full A Level will take 2 academic years to complete. The first year is known as the AS (Advanced
Subsidiary) course and this leads to a qualification in its own right which contributes UCAS points
towards University. The second year of study is known as the A2 course and is the second half of the
full A Level qualification.
HOW MANY SUBJECTS WILL I STUDY?
Most students will begin their course with 4 AS subjects and continue with at least 3 of these to
A2 level. However, a tailored programme can be offered to meet your individual needs. This might
include 3 AS subjects or 2 AS subjects with 2 or 3 GCSE’s. A full GCSE Programme is also offered, for
those who haven’t quite reached the entry requirements for the A Level Programme.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Most A Levels are assessed through written exams held in January and in the summer term. Some
subjects have assessed coursework which is marked by your teachers and moderated by the
Examination Boards. You can check the details for each individual subject on the following pages.
PASTORAL CARE
As part of the full time A Level Programme you will have a Personal Tutor who will work closely with
you to help you achieve the maximum marks possible in all your subjects. It is important to realise
that Tutorial sessions are an essential part of the programme to ensure success. In group tutorial
sessions you will be helped to develop study skills, get full support in applying to University and
find out about University Funding. In 1:1 sessions you will spend time discussing your progress and
setting targets to help you to achieve the highest grades possible.
TRIPS, VISITS AND ENRICHMENTS
A vast range of subsidised activities are also offered at the College including
• Enrichment activities offered on our MC XTRA programme (see page 41)
• Specialist subject conferences and speakers provided free of charge
• Heavily subsidised residential visits to places such as New York and Geneva
What does the course involve?
This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to understand
how the body works and the role of humans in the natural world.
You will learn about the contribution of Biology to society and the
impact that this science will have on our future.
At AS Level the content is focussed around disease. You will
learn about the course of infectious diseases such as Cholera and
Tuberculosis, whilst understanding how these diseases affect the
digestive and respiratory systems respectively. You will also learn
about the causes of non-infectious diseases such as heart disease
and cancer and the impact of these diseases on a healthy body. You
will appreciate the causes of variation both between and within a
species and discover the role of biologists in tracing our evolution.
At A2 Level you will investigate population dynamics and
understand the impact of our longer life expectancy on the living
world. You will understand how new species can form and the role
of genetics in predicting the characteristics of our offspring. You will
also study respiration and photosynthesis in order to gain a deeper
understanding of how organisms function.
Standard Entry Requirements
15
Chemistry
Computing
AS / A LEVEL D99 AS / A LEVEL D100
What does the course involve?
Chemistry impacts on all aspects of our lives. Respiration relies
on the reaction between oxygen and sugar, transport relies on a
complex sequence of reactions between a fuel and an oxidant,
even listening to music on a battery-powered MP3 player
involves chemical reactions. This inspiring specification develops
fundamental chemical concepts including the structure and
chemical reactivity of atoms and molecules. The periodic table
is studied, examining why each element has an allotted place in
this well known matrix. At A2 you will study Kinetics, Equilibria,
Organic Chemistry and Spectroscopic Techniques to determine the
Molecular Formulae and Structures of Organic Compounds.
What does the course involve?
We live in a digitised and programmable world. Computing is
the study of how computer systems work and are programmed.
An understanding of computing enables students to be not just
educated users of technology, but the innovators capable of
designing new computers and programs to improve the quality
of life for others. In this course there is a focus on Problem Solving
and Programming Using Visual Basic, Communication, Networking
and Web Page Development.
Critical Thinking
English Language
AS LEVEL ONLY D102 AS / A LEVEL D104
What does the course involve?
Critical Thinking helps you to develop thinking skills and to
analyse and evaluate arguments and information, to identify
flaws in other people’s arguments and to assess the credibility
of evidence. This course doesn’t involve learning a large body of
information, it is about developing skills and as a result is taught
in one lesson per week.
Standard Entry Requirements
See page 9 for details.
What does the course involve?
An ideal course for those interested in the history and study of
the English Language. This course will introduce you to how the
English Language originated, how it is used and how it continues
to change. English Language is aimed at students who are
interested in the power of language and its place in the world. You
may wish to study English Language alongside English Literature
(particularly if you wish to become a teacher of English), or
perhaps combine it with complementary subjects such as History,
Law or one of the science subjects.
How will I be assessed
There are two exams, one in January and one in the summer.
There is no coursework element to this course.
What can I do after the course?
The skills that you will develop are directly relevant to subjects
such as English, History, Psychology, and Law, where essays and
sometimes written coursework have to be produced because
critical thinking helps to develop analytical and evaluative skills.
These skills can be applied to any subject or discipline and are
particularly helpful at university. In addition leading universities
and medical, veterinary science and law schools are increasingly
turning to their own admission tests to differentiate between
good and outstanding candidates. These tests rely heavily on
Critical Thinking skills.
Standard Entry Requirements
See page 9 for details.
Additional Entry Requirements
Grade B in GCSE English Language.
How will I be assessed
There is one 2 hour written exam in the summer and coursework
worth 40% of the total marks during the year. The coursework
unit involves 2 pieces of writing each for a different audience and
purpose. The total length of the coursework pieces is between
1500-2000 words.
What can I do after the course?
A Level English Language is useful for a wide range of careers in
the following areas: Education (at home or abroad), Publishing,
in many fields and professions. A student of English Literature
will acquire many desirable skills for employers as they progress
through the course. You may wish to study both English disciplines
or decide to combine it with subjects such as Psychology, History
and Sociology. A Level English Literature is useful for a wide range
of careers in the following areas, Education (at home or abroad),
NUS PRESIDENT SPEAKS OUT
Students at Middlesbrough College have a new
voice to make sure their views are heard at the most
senior level.
The College has appointed its second Student
Sabbatical Officer and NUS Student President –
Sean Mowbray, 19, from Hemlington.
Catering student Sean was elected by fellow
students to the one-year salaried position on the
College staff.
Student Liaison Officer Suze Clarke said: “Sean takes
over from Danielle Ripley, who has just finished her
year in the role and who did a fantastic job.”
“Sean’s role, starting in August, will be to represent
the views of the students and ensure they are heard
right through to senior leadership level.”
“He will be a Student Governor and sit on the Board
of Governors, getting involved in the key decisionmaking
processes.”
Middlesbrough College is committed to listening to
the views of students and acting upon them, and
runs a Learner Voice Programme to gather constant
feedback.
He will also get involved in Middlesbrough College
events such as the Freshers’ Fair, awareness
campaigns and fundraising.
Sean said: “The issue I concentrated most on when I
campaigned for the job was promoting equality and
diversity, something which is close to my heart and
that the College is committed to doing.”
“I’ve been involved with the student movement
all through my time at the College and this was
the next natural progression for me. I’ve been
shadowing Danielle for the last couple of months
to ensure that the change over goes smoothly and I
can’t wait to really get stuck in to the role.”
“I think being Student Sabbatical officer is a great
job, instead of taking a gap year, I’ll be working,
earning a salary and bridging the gap between the
staff and the students.”
Suze said: “Sean will also act as NUS Student
President, so he has a highly responsible job to do.”
“However, he’s approaching it in a very mature and
professional way, and has a huge level of support
from the students, and we’re delighted to welcome
him to the role.”
After his year long term finishes, Sean would like to
return to his culinary studies and travel to France to
learn pastry techniques.
Sean added: “Protecting the interests of students
and making sure their views are heard is very
important to me. My other passion is catering and
that’s what I’d like to pursue as a career, going to
France to learn how the masters create all those
delicacies would be amazing. Working at the
College for the year, as well as the excellent training
I’ve received as a catering student will hopefully
give me that opportunity.”
University but former students can be found
Sheffield, De Montfort, Leeds, Heriot-Watt,
Newcastle, Durham and Aberystwyth.
Over 550 students have been offered a place at
University in 2012.
FEES AND FUNDING
THE FACTS
NO CHANGE
• Pay nothing up front
• Tuition Fee Loans can cover the full cost of tuition
fees each year
• Graduates only start repayments when they have
left university
• Repayments are linked to earnings, not the
amount that has been borrowed
WHAT’S NEW
• Repayments will end once graduates have cleared the
amount they borrowed with any interest or 30 years
after graduation (compared to 25 years previously)
• Graduates only pay back 9% of their earnings above
£21,000pa (compared to £15,000pa previously)
• Earning £25,000pa means repayments of just £6.90
per week
• Increased non-repayable grants for many students
• Increased living cost loans for many students
• Most students will have more money for living costs
than they do now
• NEW National Scholarship Programme - Financial
help may be available if household income is less than
£25,000pa. This could take the form of bursaries and
scholarships, fee waivers or discounted accommodation
PROFESSIONAL AND
CAREER DEVELOPMENT LOANS
What are they?
A Professional and Career Development Loan
is a bank loan. You make an agreement with
a participating bank to borrow an amount
between £300 and £10,000.
What’s the difference between a Professional
and Career Development Loan and an
ordinary loan?
The Skills Funding Agency pays the interest on
the loan while you’re studying – and for one
month afterwards. After this, you’ll pay interest
at the rate fixed when you took out the loan. For
more information on Professional and Career
Development Loans please check out the
