What does the course involve?<br />
Studying law will help you to develop problem solving skills and to<br />
think logically and methodically. The AS course is in two modules,<br />
the first of which covers: How Laws are Made by Parliament and<br />
Interpreted by the Courts, the Function of the Courts and the Roles<br />
of People involved with them such as Judges, Lawyers, Juries and<br />
Magistrates. The second module is an Introduction to Criminal Law<br />
in the context of assault offences and Civil Law in the context of<br />
negligence. The A2 course is also comprised of two modules both<br />
of which focus on Criminal Law, the first looks at certain offences<br />
against other people such as murder, manslaughter and assault,<br />
and the second looks at offences against property such as theft,<br />
robbery and burglary. Some defences such as intoxication, selfdefence,<br />
insanity and mistake are considered in both modules.<br />
The second module also looks at the relationship of the law to<br />
concepts such as morality and justice and uses material considered<br />
earlier in the course to examine these topics.<br />

How will I be assessed<br />
AS - There are two written exams, one in January and one in the<br />
summer. A2 - there are two written exams, one in January and<br />
one in the summer. There is no coursework element to this course.<br />
What can I do after the course?<br />
This qualification leads into Higher Education and in particular<br />
gives an indication of what study of law at Degree Level will<br />
involve. It will also be useful for other careers such as the Police,<br />
the Probation Service and Business. This course will also be of<br />
interest to anybody who wishes to gain some insight into the<br />
workings of the legal system in this country, a topic that is likely to<br />
have some impact on all of us during our lives.<br />

What does the course involve?<br />
In this course you will develop analysis skills which will allow<br />
you to interpret the messages presented by the mass media.<br />
AS Modules - In ‘Understanding Media’ you will learn Media<br />
Language and begin to identify and analyse how media language<br />
is used in media texts to create messages and meanings. In<br />
‘Creating Media’ you will apply your understanding of media<br />
texts to creating a portfolio of work for your own media products.<br />
A2 Modules - In ‘Critical Perspectives’ you develop analysis skills<br />
to consider contexts of the messages, such as social, political,<br />
historical and economic contexts. In ‘Critical Investigation’ you<br />
apply your knowledge and understanding of the media to<br />
completing a portfolio of research and production work.<br />

Grade B in GCSE English Language.<br />
How will I be assessed<br />
AS - 50% Written Exam (2 hours), 50% Coursework portfolio.<br />
A2 - 50% Written Exam (2 hours) (25 % of A2), 50% Coursework<br />
portfolio (25 % of A2).<br />
What can I do after the course?<br />
Apply to university; many students go on to study Media related<br />
courses or other related subjects such as English, Sociology and<br />
Graphic Design.<br />
